Dear Teachers and Teaching Artists, This year we are excited to announce a new format of the Teaching Artist Institute (TAI). The TAI 2 Seminar: Integrating to the Core is designed for teachers and artists interested in addressing the College and Career Ready Standards (CCRS), otherwise known as the Common Core State Standards (CCSS), through the arts. All Teachers interested in arts integrated teaching are welcome to apply. We invite teachers to apply in interdisciplinary teams from their school (i.e. an arts teacher and a third-grade teacher or a physical education teacher and a science teacher). Each interdisciplinary duo will be matched with an experienced teaching artist. The TAI Trio will then work collaboratively to design an arts-integrated unit/residency. This residency will be field tested and co-taught by the artist and teachers. This exciting opportunity is offered in partnership by Arts Education in Maryland Schools Alliance, the Maryland State Arts Council, and Young Audiences/Arts for Learning. Professional artists with classroom experience and all teachers interested in creating a CCRS arts-integrated residency program are eligible to apply. This is a competitive application process. Only 20 artists and 20 teacher teams (two teachers per team) will be selected to participate. Candidates will be selected based on experience, evidence of commitment to arts-integrated teaching and evidence of commitment to students. TAI includes access to quality instruction and resources, collaborative planning with fellow creatives, as well as one-on-one coaching with master teaching artists and curriculum specialists renowned in their fields. We look forward to your participation. Sincerely yours, TAI Teaching Artist, Mama Rashida, pilots her residency at Windsor Hills Elementary Middle. Dear Teachers and Teaching Artists,

This year we are excited to announce a new format of the Teaching Artist Institute (TAI).

Sincerely yours,

TAI Teaching Artist, Mama Rashida, pilots her residency at Windsor Hills Elementary Middle.

During the

TAI Seminar

you will get:

1. A better understanding of CCRS and how to connect it to the arts;

2. Practical knowledge and experience in teaching students skills and content across the curriculum through the art-making process;

3. Instruction in designing, writing, and collaborating to create an arts-integrated program;

4. Networking opportunities through Young Audiences/Arts for Learning, Arts Education in Maryland Schools, and the Maryland State Arts Council;

5. An artist in residence for up to four classes/groups;

6. Dialog and exchange with a community of artists and educators who are working towards the same goal: educating our future through the arts!

Our Process: Part I - The RetreatThe TAI retreat is an opportunity for :

- TEACHING ARTISTS to spend three days to focus on their craft. Room and board for three days and two nights provided.

- AI TEACHERS to spend two days focusing on AI facilitation in their schools. Teachers interested in participating in the “arts integration specialists” track will be referred to as, “AI TEACHERS”. AI TEACHERS can be from any discipline. Room and board for two days and one night provided.

- TEACHER PARTNERS to spend one day working collaboratively with their AI TEACHER and ARTIST to define goals and objectives for the artist-in-residence.

- Day One: TEACHING ARTISTS report to the TAI Seminar to:

• Identify goals;

• Be introduced to the backwards planning method; and

• Develop an understanding of the components of a residency plan and participate in a model arts-integrated workshop.

Day Two: AI TEACHERS will join the TEACHING ARTISTS at the retreat. On Day Two TEACHING ARTISTS and AI TEACHERS will:

• Participate in a model arts integrated workshop;

• Discuss and review the CCRS, also known as the Common Core State Standards; and

• Brainstorm connections to the arts; and

• Participate in differentiated workshops.

Day Three: The TEACHER PARTNER will join their AI TEACHER and TEACHING ARTIST. Breakfast and lunch will be provided. On Day Three all participants will work collaboratively in school teams. Each team will participate in a model arts-integrated workshop, identify specific grade level standards that they will address though their program, and begin outlining their residency plan (for ARTISTS) and lesson plans (for both TEACHERS).

“I really felt like I was re-energized in my way of thinking and the facilitators brought a plethora of knowledge to the table. I appreciated their ability to listen, answer questions, and make the experience fun, interactive and simply enjoyable. - Valerie Branch, Teaching Artist

Part II - Additional Workshops

DAY FOUR: All TAI TEAM MEMBERS will participate in a model arts-integrated lesson, understand the components of an arts-integrated lesson plan, and work collaboratively to outline and plan each lesson in their program. Each team will plan a presentation of their work to be modeled at the next session.

DAY FIVE: All TAI TEAM MEMBERS will team teach and present their plan in small groups to receive feedback. The team will schedule a mutually agreeable time to field test their program. The field testing should occur between October 19, 2014 and February 1, 2015.

Part III - Field-Testing

TAI TEAMS field test their arts-integrated programs in their schools. One grade level (up to four classes/core groups) will participate in at least four sessions with the artist. AI TEACHERS and their TEACHER PARTNER will teach at least two arts-integrated lessons that compliment/reinforce skills and concepts in the residency. A member of the TAI Teaching Staff will be on site one day of the residency to observe the work with the students.

Part IV - Reflection

All TAI TEAM MEMBERS will participate in an evaluation and reflection meeting to:

• Report on the results of their residency program, share student work and lessons learned;

• Evaluate the TAI program and processes; and

• Provide honest constructive feedback to the TAI teaching staff.

On the last day of their residency, Baltimore Improv Group poses with their newly trained players at Seven Oaks Elementary!

Children are natural improvisors--they are curious, imaginative, and creative.  It's really amazing to watch them engage in the structured play of improvisational theater to see how they make quick connections not only to their academics, but also clearly as communicators with each other.   -Bridget Cavaiola, Baltimore Improv Group
