Message from our Director, Leslie Brown Welcome to our fall newsletter! We are pleased to be a part of a growing global movement that recognizes the potential of community university engagement (CUE) for the well-being of communities, nations and the world. The Institute for Studies and Innovation in CUE is part of an enhanced infrastructure at UVic to support engagement by providing a space for the study and practice of engaged scholarship and interdisciplinary innovation. We value the diversity of knowledge and learning and affirm that knowledge resides within both academia and the broader community. I know there are lots of amazing research, learning and other activities happening with people from UVic that embody the characteristics of CUE. I invite anyone engaged in such work to connect with us at the Institute so that we can learn from one another and together build our capacity at UVic to be a place where learning and doing CUE is valued and of the highest standard. Research & Internship NewsSarah Wiebe appointed as ISICUE Post-Doc FellowA West Coaster to the core, Sarah is thrilled to return to Coast Salish territory and join the ISICUE team! She recently completed her Ph.D at the University of Ottawa, focusing on the Aamjiwnaang First Nation’s struggles for environmental and reproductive justice in Canada’s Chemical Valley. Her scholarly interests include arts-based participatory research and feminist visual methods. She is supporting ISICUE to develop its Research Agenda, liaising with CBR-Canada, providing student mentorship and co-organizing a workshop on promising

practices of participatory research with Dr. Crystal Tremblay to be held in conjunction with the upcoming Beyond Engagement conference in May 2014. Stay tuned! Details coming soon. ISICUE is also hiring a research assistant graduate student position, working alongside Sarah and our Director, Leslie Brown—a $5,000 contract for approximately 15 hours per week, for 16 weeks. For details, see www.uvic.ca/cue. Applications are due December 9th, with interviews between December 16–21st.

2013-2104 UVic Learning and Teaching Centre Grant on Dialogue, Deliberation and Civic EngagementTogether with Professor Tara Ney and the School of Public Administration, ISICUE has secured a $5000 grant to develop a new community-engaged course on Dialogue, Deliberation and Civic Engagement. Community and campus scholars/practitioners will be invited to co-create the curriculum and practicum ideas.

Co-op Student Mallory Coletta joins ISICUE teamMallory Colletta is ISICUE’s current United Way co-op student, hired as a research assistant to work on a research brief on community engagement and mobilization. Mallory is a student in the Masters in Community Development program at UVic with particular interest in issues of food security and community sustainability. In January 2014, Mallory is moving to Whitehorse to do a second co-op placement as a research associate at the Arctic Institute of Community Based Research (AICBR), who are one of the key leads in the ISICUE-sponsored CBRCanada network.

United Way Tables InternsISICUE will have two new interns working on the Community Tables: Engaging Neighbors Project which is now entering its third year! Amanda Slaunwhite, a Ph.D student in Health Geography, will focus on background research and facilitation for the new neighborhood tables; and Michael Fraser, a Masters student in Political Science, will focus on the mapping process and reporting. This work builds on the Colwood, Brentwood, North Park, Gorge Tillicum and Oakland Tables and the overall Community Engagement capacity building work which the OCBR—now as ISICUE—has been doing since 2009.

Community Engagement Institute Workshops 2014ISICUE is planning a new round of Community Engagement workshops focused on creative methods and approaches to community-based research. These workshops will be focused on students and community developers, building on the very successful six-part Community Engagement Institute series held this past Winter–Spring 2013. Stay tuned for dates TBA in December 2013.

United Way of Greater Victoria partnershipISICUE has continued on the strong previous partnership begun by the OCBR with a new MOU with the United Way of Greater Victoria (UWGV) which supports three main initiatives: 1. The Community Tables: Engaging Neighbors

Initiative, which provides graduate research, facilitation and local asset mapping/visioning for healthy communities

and citizen engagement;2. The UVic University 101 program, which

provides access to low-income and multi-barriered community members, and

3. Six Issue Papers on core United Way priority areas including overviews, best practice research and action recommendations.

Community-University Engagement @ UVic NewsUVic CUE Meet and Greet/ Launch of ISICUE Research Affiliate Program December 10th from 4-5:30pm UVic faculty and researchers are invited to a festive meet and greet event for those involved and passionate about community engaged research and scholarship. It’s been a year since

many of us met to champion the development of the new Institute, so come and hear what’s been happening and what’s in store for the next year. We will also be launching the ISICUE Research Affiliate Program! Please RSVP to [email protected]. If

you cannot make it, please keep in touch about this new Initiative through our website, or let us know if you want to be on the contact list.

Provost’s Engaged Scholarship AwardsCall for Nominations – Provost’s Engaged Scholar Awards: Awarded to tenured members of faculty who have achieved great distinction as a community engaged scholar. This year two recipients will each receive a one-time award of $10,000 at the beginning of their 5-year term to support their community engaged research and teaching. Nomination packages are available at www.uvic.ca/vpacademic. VP Academic Reeta Tremblay is also supporting the new Community Engaged Learning Fund for curriculum development will offer up to four competitive, peer-reviewed, grants annually of up to $6,500 each to design or re-design undergraduate core courses and/or significant components of undergraduate programs. The deadline for applications is January 6, 2014. UNESCO ChairUVic’s Budd Hall shares the UNESCO Chair in Community Based Research and Social Responsibility in Higher Education with Rajesh Tandon, the director of the PRIA, Participatory Research in Asia. Check out their website to see what’s happening globally. www.unescochair-cbrsr.org

CRD Victoria Community Green MapThe UVic Community Mapping Collaboratory is a community-university partnership engaging researchers, students, citizens and multi-sector civil society in developing projects and innovation, open-source engagement tools

and methods for participatory planning and mapping, funded by SSHRCC, Van City, CRD, City, the Office of Campus Planning/ Sustainability. Visit www.mapping.uvic.ca for more information and for details on the upcoming launch of the

CRD Victoria and Region Community Green Map, an online resource connecting people and places and celebrating sustainability throughout our region.

Pacific Housing Research NetworkThe Pacific Housing Research Network is co-chaired by UBC and UVic and involves key housing leaders in BC—the BC Non Profit Housing Association, BC Housing, CMHC. UVic recently sponsored their annual symposium with over 70 students, researchers and community members attending—see www.phrn.ca for more info.

CUVic 2014: UVic’s Global Engagement ConferenceLocated in beautiful Victoria, British Columbia, CUVic 2014 is a 3-day conference focused on the growing global effort to deepen community engagement as universities seek to enhance their potential to contribute to the public good. The conference will offer a variety of keynote presentations, workshops, field trips and social networking opportunities.Built on four key community-university engagement pillars (Community – Pedagogy – Knowledge – Impact), CUVic 2014 will be of interest to faculty, students, community (business, Indigenous nations and organizations, non-government organizations, community groups, funders and governments), higher education administrators, researchers, scholars, national and global community-university and community-based research networks.

Abstracts are now being accepted for workshops, teaching circles and poster presentations. Abstracts should be limited to 250 words and provide a concise statement of the topic or issue to be discussed and a summary of the major findings and conclusions.All submissions should be forwarded to [email protected] no later than midnight Pacific Standard Time, January 31, 2014. National and Global NewsUVic at Engage 2013 in Bristol, EnglandA UVic team made up of VP Academic Reeta Tremblay, Dean of Social Sciences Peter Keller, University Librarian Jonathan Bengston, along with Maeve and Leslie from ISICUE, are attending and presenting at the UK-based National Coordinating Committee for Public Engagement’s (NCCPE) annual conference in Bristol England in November 2013. NCCPE is the major umbrella group for CUE in the UK and they visited UVic in March 2013. Also attending Engage 2013 is Martin Taylor, former UVic VPR and now acting as a special advisor to CBR Canada, the national network supported by UVic ISICUE , which has a UK-Canada Partnership Pilot with the UK.
