From the Principal: Liz Murphy Dear Parents, It is hard to believe that we are just days away from the end of our 2009-2010 school year! I wanted to take this opportunity to thank you all so very much for partnering with us this year! We have much to celebrate from this past year and we still have many exciting events scheduled for the last weeks of school! Our talented students had their opportunity to show off their talent this past Friday evening, with our first student generated talent show! We had over thirty acts that amazed and thrilled our audience. We are so very proud of our talented students! The testing window for our CRCT has passed and I am happy to say that our students worked hard and did their best to use strategies and answer all their questions! In the meantime, while wait- ing for our results, we have a very com- prehensive program of intensive learn- ing taking place in our third and fifth grades. We are compacting our learning with small group instruction in Math and Reading. This is an exciting time to refine our skills and boost our knowledge in preparation for upcoming fourth and sixth grade for our students. I want to invite all our Mothers to our Breakfast With Mom mornings. This is an awesome time to come and visit with us and eat breakfast with your child. Due to the expected large numbers of Mothers attending, we have spread this breakfast over two days, to accommo-date everyone attending. We are asking that Mothers come on the day assigned (by the beginning letter of MOM’s last name) to eat with all your child(ren). We look forward to seeing you on this special breakfast in your honor!

May 8 at 7:00 p.m. is our school production of Annie. Many hours of practice and hard work has been poured into this play! Our students are excited and prepared to deliver a phenomenal performance. This performance will be at Tapp Middle School and you must purchase tickets to attend! Ticket order forms will be sent home this week. We invite all our school family to come to our first annual Compton Players production! We have many exciting events (plus field day) in the upcoming weeks. I look forward to seeing you all with us on these special days!

Math Coach Compton students have been working hard at the game First in Math. This is a math game that students use problem solving skills and computation to earn online stickers! Each student has their own login and password, and they can play at home through the summer. Please encourage your child to login and play! The website is www.firstinmath.com . There is also a link on Compton's home page (right navigation bar - 24 Games).

From the Compton PTA Board

“Putting the Pieces Together to Make a Difference” http://comptonblogs.typepad.com/compton_pta/

Thank you to all who participated in our Spring Fund Raiser. The money we raised will go to benefit our students and school. The PTA will have its final meeting on May 11, 6-7pm. We will present our slate of officers for the 2010-2011 school year . There will be an ice cream social and our 5th graders will be performing. PTA Yard Sale has been rescheduled for Saturday, May 15th from 8AM until 2PM in the bus lanes. Be sure to come by and SHOP, SHOP, SHOP. Sincerely, Randi Taylor and Debbie Smith

Partners in Education http://comptonblogs.typepad.com/community/ We would like to thank all of our Partners in Education for the overwhelming hard work, support and dedication to the students, staff and community of Compton Elementary School. Reader Alert:

Once again, for those of you who are quick to read your newsletter, here’s a treat. Fill out the form

below, clip it off, then give it to your child’s homeroom teacher on Friday, May 7. They will become

eligible for a special drawing to have lunch with the Principal later this month.

My parents and I read the Compton Newsletter:

Child’s Name: ______________________________________________________

Grade: _______ Teacher:______________________________

Remember to sign your child’s agenda nightly. Throughout the year during the morning

announcements, we randomly select students and award prizes to those whose agendas are signed.

Box Tops for Education

The class with the most box tops will earn a popcorn party! April’s winning class is Mrs. Davenport’s 4th grade class.

Art Happenings http://www.wix.com/gwynestes/Compton-Elementary-Art-Room The students have accomplished much this school year. Fourth and Fifth grade

are finishing their last big project of the year; Egyptian wall paintings. Second and Third grade have finished a jungle collage. I have many of these hanging up. Kindergarten and First grade, continue to complete various projects. These projects are designed to teach skills and also the elements which are essential to a great piece of Art. The skills will be used as they advance and the art projects become more detailed. With the summer break, encourage your students to use Art to fill empty time. It is a great way to use this time in a positive way.

Computer Lab http://www.myteacherpages.com/webpages/3rdcompton/ Students in 5th—1st are in competition to earn points using First in Math web

site. This site can be accessed at home. There are hyperlinks on the Compton home web page and on the Technology Blog. Please bookmark these links to safeguard your child from reaching inappropriate sites. The fifth graders are also learning how to evaluate internet resources using safety guidelines. Third and Fourth graders will be taking part in an online technology assessment program called Easy Tech during the month. Fourth graders will also be creating a photo story presentation. They will select images, audio, transitions and slide effects for their project. Third graders will end their year with creating a graph and summarizing the data. Our first and second graders will continue to use the word processor and learning about its many features. Kinder-garteners have begun working in WORD. They are having fun changing the font, typing and adding clip art. In addition they will be working to create graphic organizers and graphs.

Music Notes http://comptonblogs.typepad.com/music_notes/ “It is at the primary school age that the imagination must be stimulated; and

opportunities for emotional development, which contain experience of the ability to feel, and the power to control the expression of that feeling, must also be provided.” Carl Orff. This year in music students gained this opportunity to experience their ability to feel and to develop their power to control their expression of feeling through the practice of singing, dancing, playing instruments, and moving to the sound of a steady beat. It is at this time of the school year that I’m always amazed to see how much progress my students have made as they demonstrate their skills in these conceptual areas of music. This summer, please take some time to sharpen your musical skills and have some fun with the music games and activities offered in the following web sites:

• New York Philharmonic Kidzone! www.nyphilkids.org • Play Misic www.playmusic.org • Kid Tunes www.musick8kids.com • Creating Music www.creatingmusic.com • Dallas Symphony www.dsokids.com

P.E. Pulse http://comptonblogs.typepad.com/compton_pe/ It’s so hard to believe that Field Day is almost here. Please save the date: Friday, May 14, 2010 for our annual Compton Field Day. I am anticipating a

fun-filled sunny day. Here are a few reminders for Field Day: 1. Change of clothes, including undergarments and shoes. 2. Head covering (yes, there will be the flour station again) 3. Sun block & Water bottle 4. A Smile If you are interested in volunteering your time OR donating any items, please let Coach Spiegel know. I am looking forward to seeing you all there.

Clinic Dose http://comptonblogs.typepad.com/compton_clinic/ Letters will be sent home with any student who has medicine in the clinic. The letter will require a parent to inform to me if you will pick up the medicine. CCSD policy states that all medicines will be destroyed on the last day of school if not picked up. Medicines can not be kept in the clinic over the summer. If your child has allergies to outdoor insects, such as bees/ants/mosquitoes please provide Benadryl and/or an Epipen as needed. On the Compton Clinic blog a link to Atlanta Allergy and Asthma clinic is posted so you can check the pollen count for each day. Also posted is the link to the Clean Air Campaign. If your child has asthma, you should keep track of smog levels which can impose health hazards for those with compromised respiratory systems. It is recommend that your child not wear flip flops at school. Over the years I have seen many preventable in-juries to toes and feet due to wearing flip flops. I wish you a wonderful and safe summer break.

Counselors Corner http://comptonblogs.typepad.com/compton_school_counseling/ As the school year is winding down, parents are encouraged to start to find good summer programs for their child/children. Safety should be considered whenever any decision is made. It is not safe at any time to leave children alone. Please tell your child/children not to give out any information over the phone or the internet. If you need to contact Boys & Girls club, the phone number is 770-944-2697.

Media Center http://comptonblogs.typepad.com/mediacenter/ Summer is a good time for kids to rest their bodies, but their brains keep growing and learning. Did you know that if kids don’t exercise their brains, they can experience a learning loss, called summer slide? By reading over the summer, your child can not only maintain skills learned in school and get ready for next year. Check out the Media Center’s blog for excellent reading sites filled with activities and suggestions.

Student Council Report http://comptonblogs.typepad.com/compton_asp_program/

The Student Council has had a very busy year. They have put in many service hours volunteering for various committees throughout the year. The students will have their last meeting and breakfast celebration on May 12, 7:15-8:00am in the Media Center. They will also help out with Field Day afternoon activities on May 14.
