PREFACE
Investing in our future
Corporate Social Responsibility is a highly contested subject, with no clear
definition or accepted boundaries. For us it represents a new way of doing
business which respects the impact of our action on wider stakeholders. What
is becoming clear, however, is that CSR is a process rather than a set of
actions, and represents the evolution of thinking and values within a
corporation and a change in the way in which companies see themselves in the
world.
GNFC, as part of its CSR policy for the next five years, is planning to
consolidate its activities and to focus exclusively on few core activities which
will be meaningful for the region and where it can make some impact. Main
areas of activity identified for our intervention are education, agriculture
extension and Socio-economic development of Bharuch town in particular and
District in general.
We believe that our corporate strategy is inspired by the opportunity to
contribute to a more secured and sustainable future. We employ an
outstanding leadership team to direct our strategies.
We have made a positive step forward in each of these areas. We have done this
by engaging and listening to our key stakeholders, and where appropriate, by
acting based on their inputs. Examples of what has been achieved in each area
can be found throughout this booklet.
As we look ahead, we will undoubtedly be challenged to meet our ambitious
goals. Alongside this, we look forward to forge partnetships to support and
guide our actions. We want it to better reflect what is important to you, what
you think we should be doing differently and how you think we can work better
together. It is only with our stakeholders input, our commitment and a shared
responsibility to improve the world around us that will ensure a better future.
As always, I look forward to continuing the journey with each of our
stakeholders.

Beyond Business: Social Perspectives
It is absolutely important for businesses and business people to have a social perspective,
and to be engaged in social issues beyond business. GNFC has a commendable record of
corporate social responsibility and it ear marks a substantial portion of its profits regularly
for such activities. The company is presently running a 32 bed hospital with the help of
21qualified doctors. It is also running an English medium school for 3,000 students and
one of the best post graduate colleges in the region. Majority of the students of these
institutions are from the local community.
GNFC helps needy people through vocational training, eye camps, health camps, assistance
to handicaps, old age education, book bank, help to the victims of natural calamities, village
adoption, etc. through its NGO Narmadanagar Rural Development Society (NARDES)
In addition to this, GNFC provides a very strong technical support to the farmers by having
a state of art soil testing laboratory, a model tissue culture laboratory which provides
approximately one million disease-free, high quality banana saplings and a popular organic
fertilizers programme for farmers, besides its other activities.
GNFC part of its CSR policy for the next five years, GNFC is planning to consolidate its
activities and to focus exclusively on few core activities which will be meaningful for the
region and where it can make some impact.
Thus successful business organizations have some influence in society. Thus it is an
obligation for us who are in this fortunate position, to use our influence to do the right
thing, to try and contribute as much as we can, to help improve society by undertaking
certain CSR activities.

CSR Booklet 2012

To carry out its social commitments, the Company has established two Non-Government
Organizations (NGOs) viz. (i) Narmadanagar Rural Development society (NARDES) and (ii)
Narmada Education & Scientific Research Society (NEST)

College under the Public Private Partnership Model.

because of new CSR Policy announced by GoG. In line with the Industrial Policy of GoG, the

Development of the State as a whole and of Bharuch District in particular, in consultation
with District Development Officer, Bharuch, Collector, Bharuch, Secretary, Tribal
Development Department, GoG in the areas of Health and Family Welfare, Education,
Agricultural and Tribal/Rural Development etc. The basic approach adopted for selecting

up those gaps by providing financial support, so that schemes can be effectively
implemented.
Although, the Company has made a significant contribution of over Rs.56 crore in last five
years in the field of CSR, its effort/initiatives have not been fully recognized or have failed
to build the image of the company/create a Goodwill.
So as to enhance the image of the company and also the contribution of CRS initiatives
undertaken by the company is visible to public at large, it is expedient that a policy for CSR
initiatives is formulated so that ultimate objective is served. For the purpose, few focused
areas need to be identified, strategies are formulated and projects determined for
implementation by the Company on its own to the extent possible. While identifying the
focused areas, the Socio Economic Development of Bharuch Town in particular and
Bharuch District in general be kept in mind along with the project affected families.
The concept of CSR in India has matured in the last two decades. The Government of
India has framed a Voluntary Guide Lines towards CSR for achieving the desired Socio
Economic Objectives. A reference to few of the organizations which have done the
outstanding work by focusing on certain areas in the field of CSR deserves a mention.

premier Fertilizer Company of India. For the past one and a half decade, it has
managed and implemented programmes for enhancing sustainable livelihood
development and poverty reduction and empowering communities to manage

NARDES (Narmadanagar Rural Development Society)
About the Society
NARDES was established as a Registered Trust in 1980, NARDES is an autonomous NGO
sponsored by GNFC which aims at implementing various CSR projects of GNFC.
As NARDES had initially started with small scale activities like camps for Handicaps,
Tailoring activities, Mobile dispensary van, OPD at GNFC site etc.. These initiatives although
enriching in their own way but were not enough to make a measurable impact on the
society and as the CSR domain emerged rapidly there was scope of larger avenues and a
more focused approach. For the full-fledged implementation of its CSR plans, NARDES, the
existing CSR arm of GNFC was restructured. Considering the same NARDES hired a pool of
professionals from various reputed social and rural development colleges of India.
Although we have the ability to accelerate this historic progress but we can be more
innovative about delivering solutions.

Our Approach to Development

When the programs are handed over to the community after a lot of guidance and trainings, theprograms seem to be sustainable and well functioned and people seem to take the responsibility of sustaining the programs as they are the ones who get the maximum benefits.
c) Priorities in rural area, remote area, poor and women: Another distinguishing feature of our society is that we work for the poor and people living in remote and rural areas and who are unable to improve their living standards.
d) Participatory planning: The local people are made to participate in the planning
process. Right from formulating, to implementation. It is thus participatory in nature.
e) Mass mobilization and creating awareness: All plans and programs are based on
the involvement of the total mass. This process of involving the masses is effective in getting the results as awareness programs are also launched side by side
f) People as an active and responsible agent of development: The local people get the feeling that they have to be involved in their programs as they are the ones to get the maximum benefit out of it. Hence, they feel more responsible and act as an active actor of development.

TISSUE CULTURE LABORATORY
CSR Booklet 2012

To meet the increasing demand on agricultural products mainly to feed increasing
population of the Country and also to increase the export quantum, It is compelled to
increase the production of agricultural commodities. Having favorable agro climatic
conditions for the agricultural production in India, we may achieve good export quantum
if we increases the production level on agricultural front.
The following major three methods are adopted to increase the quantum of
agricultural products:
a) Bringing more area under cultivation
b) Bringing more area under Irrigation
c) Replacing with Hybrid/Improved seed material over conventional one
The third method is of less capital intensive with higher cost effectiveness both at
national and at farmers level to increase the productivity in the field.
Tissue culture is one of the Bio-Technological activities where one can produce the
seedlings on more number under controlled (Laboratory) conditions whose
quality exactly replicate the mother plant. If the mother plant is genetically
vigorous and more productive, the Seedlings developed from them shall replicate the
same quality. Also the quantity of seedlings shall be developed more in number
comparing to any other conventional way of seed multiplication. Any reputed Tissue
Culture Lab adopt systematic procedure in selecting the better quality of mother plant.
Thus at field level, the Tissue Culture Plants have more productivity than the
seedlings raised through conventional methods.
Every batch of the mother plants are examined for the presence of various types of
virus infections (which may cause very adverse effect on plant growth) through
reputed laboratory. The Tissue Culture Plants are developed under controlled
conditions with due care in their initial period. This develops better immunology in
the younger seedlings which can take care any minor adverse effect at field level and
withstand against the same with minimum infection towards pests & diseases.
Also the Tissue Culture Plants are kept in the controlled condition during its
hardening stage. This shall minimise the duration of cultivation period in the field.
Thus the Farmers have to deploy their resources for lesser duration comparing to the
conventional practices. In case of Banana, the Tissue Plants are kept for about 60 days
for its primary & secondary hardening. This two months duration is minimised at
the field level which shall save considerable expenditure to the Banana Grower.
Since the Tissue Plants are developed under controlled uniform conditions and has
similar genetic characters, the maturity at the field level shall be uniform. The Farmers
CSR Booklet 2012
28
can harvest uniform products at lesser interval of duration comparing to the
conventional seedling material.
In case of Banana, the farmers plants Banana suckers in their fields in conventional
practice. In that case the mortality rate is higher up to 30% where the farmers have to
go for Gap filling after about a month. Since the TCPs are well hardened before coming
out from Lab, the mortality rate is very minimum to the extent of 1-2%. Thus the
duration of harvesting (from first cutting of Banana loams to last cutting) exits for
about three months if the farmers uses the suckers plantation, where as in case of
Banana TCPs, the same harvesting duration may be for about a month.
Thus Farmers saves considerable cultivation period which saves in cost of
cultivation. Also because of its genetic vigorousness, the productivity is higher
apart from better resistivity of the plants towards adverse conditions.
GNFC being Socially conscious organisation, it was felt that the Farmers of the
surrounding region should get better seedling material. Thus the Tissue Culture
Laboratory was established as one of the Agricultural Services activities. Since
the Company supplies TCPs to the Farmers, the Farmers are given advice on
advanced agricultural practices for the better productivity by the officials of the
Company.
Thus GNFC serves the Farming community for more profit by providing better
quality seedling material for better productivity by minimising the expenses at
field level.
