Know your limits….
A while back, I was called out to open a car
that had the keys locked in the trunk. When I
arrived on the scene, I learned that the car was
a rental and the driver decided to see if he
could open the trunk before I got there. He
took a hammer and punch and proceeded to knock the trunk lock into
the car. That not only did not open the car but now it needed body
work to repair the damage that the driver had done. His wife informed
me that they did not buy the insurance for damage on the rental car
because her husband was like Tim Taylor and thought he needed more
power to get it open. I added my knowledge to what he did and got the
trunk open. If he had only thought about what he was doing, he could
have saved himself some time and money by letting a professional open
his car. You must know your limits and perform like the professional
locksmith that you are. Only you can tell what you are capable of
doing. Get the training and practice necessary. Be the best.
It's meeting time and we will be voting for officers. Come and cast your
vote.
Your President,
Mike Middick, CML

From Gator Tools
Notes from the GT boss’s desk,
The Mortise Socket MS056c is back in stock and being shipped to your
favorite suppliers. Not everyone stocks this tool but it is available and in
stock at www.hlFlake.com, as they are available through the rest of our
suppliers we will list them on our website.
The Mortise Socket is an innovative tool for the locksmithing and aluminum
store front service industry. Many times the mortise lock will get cross
threaded, and become extremely tight or hard to remove. If the lock you’re
working on is an expensive or high security lock, you can remove it without
damage to the face of the lock.
Corrosion, dirt or grease will not stop this tool from its task. It will work on the
many variations of sizes of locks in today’s market. Such as: Standard mortise
locks, many IC core housings, restricted key housings, just about all types of
mortise locks.
This tool will grip a standard mortise lock. By attaching a 3/8" socket or
breaker bar you can turn the most stubborn of lock. It is thin enough to slide
between most mortise lock and security collars. Plus if there is a need, the tool
will break the average Adams-Rite set-screw to remove those expensive locks
without damaging the face of the lock.
It comes in retail packaging, instruction and the correct size hex wrench to fit
the tool.

The Advantages of Laughter
^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^
People with a good sense of humor
tend to be more creative, stable, and
self-confident.
They also tend to be healthier;
laughter releases endorphins that
energize us, increase our endurance,
and lessen our pain.
A person who can laugh at life
and laugh at himself will have
less stress in life.
Humor also makes you
more effectively persuasive.

Beginner’s Corner
Shear line and Lock Picking
In a cylinder lock, the shear line (also known as the split line in Australia), is
where the plug ends and the shell begins. When a break in the pins is reached by
picking, the bottom pin will "hang" at the shearline due to the space between the
plug and shell of the cylinder.
This "imperfection" in the lock
mechanism is an unavoidable
defect in the manufacturing
process that allows for lock
picking. Lock picking is a vital
part of the locksmithing process
as it can grant non-destructive
entry to the lock thus allowing it
to be opened or rekeyed instead of
being drilled or destroyed.
Lock picking is the art of unlocking a lock by analyzing and manipulating the
components of the lock device, without the original key. Although lock picking
can be associated with criminal intent, it is an essential skill for a locksmith.
Lock picking is the ideal way of opening a lock without the correct key, while
not damaging the lock, allowing it to be rekeyed for later use, which is
especially important with antique locks that would be impossible to replace if
destructive entry methods were used.
The move towards combination locks for high security items such as safes was
intended to remove the weakest part of the lock: its keyhole.
In normal situations it is almost always easier to gain access by some means
other than lock picking; most common locks can be quickly and easily opened
using a drill, bolt cutters, padlock shim, a bump key or a hydraulic jack. The
hasp, door, or fixture they are attached to can be cut, broken, unscrewed or
otherwise removed, windows can be broken etc. Therefore a lock that offers
high resistance to picking does not necessarily make unauthorized access more
difficult, but will make surreptitious unauthorized access more difficult. Locks
are often used in combination with alarms to provide layered security.
Some people enjoy picking locks recreationally. This may also be referred to as
Locksport.
A traditional set of pin/tumbler lock picks. The two tools on the left are torsion wrenches. The picks from left to right are:
hook pick, half diamond (steep angles), snake rake, half
diamond (shallow angles), S-rake pick, double round pick and long double ended pick.
