Learning Objectives

• Chaining articles;

• Plagiarism:– What it is;

– How to avoid it;

– Why to avoid it….consequences;

• Concentrating on Paper / Essay:– Structure;

– Best Practice within structure;

• So, I’m asking you to use other material to write an essay based on (strong, academic) evidence

• How does that tie in with plagiarism?

• Identify 2 ways that you can still leverage others work without plagiarizing

• Identify 2 ways that you can leverage others work by plagiarising

What is Plagiarism

• Definition:– Passing off someone else’s ideas as your own;

– To use another’s work without crediting it;

• Can you use other’s work?– Definitely –’standing on the shoulders of giants’ ***;

• So how can we legitimately use others work?– Acknowledgement:

• Quotation marks and citation;

• Indented text and citation;

• Paraphrasing and citation;

• One of the core goals of this module is that you can SUMMARIZE other’s work, and ATTRIBUTE it correctly to them.

How to acknowledge: Cite It Right

• http://www.ul.ie/~library/pdf/citeitright.pdf• 2 parts to a citation:

– A full description of where to find the source (at the end of your text):

• Must contain:– Name of authors;– Year;– Title;– Depends on source:

» If Book – ISBN number, title and editors;» If Journal: name, volume number, and page numbers;» If conference proceedings– Name, location, page numbers and date;» If website – http address and last accessed date.

– A reference in the text itself:• Brackets containing a unique link to the full description at end of text

– Styles:• Harvard:

– http://libweb.anglia.ac.uk/referencing/harvard.htm

Citing references in the text itself

• Short Quotations:• Put short quotations (around twenty words or less) in inverted commas within the text..• Society has developed a “boundary-free culture” (Critser 2003, p.31) which has affected our

food consumption…

• Long Quotations• Long quotations should be indented in a separate paragraph, in a smaller font. Cite the author and date

in the same font and in brackets at the right margin of the page, under the quotation.

Nowhere did this new boundary-free culture of American food consumption thrive better than in the traditional American family, which by the ‘80s was undergoing rapid change. (Critser 2003, p.31)

• Paraphrasing or Summarising• Paraphrasing is referring to a source without directly quoting from it. Here are 3 ways you might cite the

same source, depending on how you have referred to it in your sentence.• It has been suggested that our culture is now without boundaries (Critser 2003, p.31) and…

OR• In a popular study, Critser (2003, p.31) argues that our culture is now without boundaries…

OR• In 2003, Critser (p.31) suggested that our culture has become boundary-less…

Consequences of Plagiarism

• For You:– It means that you fail to acquire analytical summary,

and thus evaluation, skills / writing skills;– It can give you an short-term advantage over the

class if uncaught;– But its often obvious to academics;– And we have software that detects it;– But seen as the worst academic crime you can

commit:• Student Disciplinary Committee:

– Suspension;– Expulsion;

How To: Structuring an Essay

• Structure:1. Abstract: Domain, focus area, what the summary

shows;2. Introduction: Overview of the area, why important,

what the unifying focus of your review is and how subsections fit into that unifying focus;

3. Sections:1. Sub-area 1;2. Sub-area 2;3. Sub-area 3;4. ….

4. Conclusion: Tying these sub-areas together to re-iterate an overall focus / conclusion (and state where this research might go);

5. References

What we want to assess in this essay

• That you don’t plagiarize – I will check;

• That you can reference appropriately;

• That you format this summarization appropriately, with few grammatical / spelling errors;

• That you make an attempt to summarize papers / texts critically;

• That you report on (difficult) literature accurately;

• That you can integrate across the papers and come up with a ‘unifying-whole’ vision across the papers / chapters / media you are responsible for

• That the team can create a convincing integrated whole across team members;

dy“Difficult”

• Easy:– Edison was born in.... At the age of 11, he went to...

• Difficult:– Reporting on how sound was produced by the

gramophone, Thermin;– Showing how sound was synched with films and

comparing the 2 predominant approaches;

– Discussing how eye-tracking works, what it can tell us;– Giving a balanced evaluation of web 2.0: the good

AND the bad, and discussing how they relate

How to Guide

• Do not:– Plagiarize;– Use a term you define later;– Put it in just because you read it;– Structure it based on papers / when you read papers;– I…

• Do:– Have a unified vision/whole/theme for the essay and

subsections;– Try the 2-word summary technique – threads;– Be consistent in your use of terms / tense;– Reference appropriately;– Show you can appropriately use others work;– Show you can summarize;– Format it well– Number your sections, especially if they are hierarchical;
