This tiny house has curved roof lines and a smaller curve at the base. To make curves that are equal on both

sides this protractor works great. The degree lines were matched to the grid lines below the paper to give true

markings.

Draw the roof line, door, and windows. This master copy will be the basis for pattern pieces. Seam

allowances will need to be added to the pieces.

Use another piece of pattern paper to trace each pattern piece.

Add ½” seam allowance to the window dimensions on all four sides. This will be folded under and pressed

to give a finished edge.

The door will be separated into two pieces to allow for zipper placement on the side of the door. Add ½”

seam allowances to the long edges of the door pieces only

Add ½” seam allowance to the bottom of the roof line only.

Add ½” seam allowance to the top of the house portion only.

Or download window and door pattern pieces here

Here is the finished pattern layout for the Tiny House. Remember you can download the door and windowpatterns from Coats and Clark.

Match stripe fabric before cutting the roof pattern. To do this put fabric right sides together matching

stripes. Uneven stripe patterns will require special care to ensure placement. This will be important later

when it’s time to match the zipper band to the front and back of the backpack.

Carefully pin paper roof pattern to the stripe fabric being careful not to move the fabric. Cut two in the stripe.

Cut two in fusible interfacing if desired. Press interfacing to the wrong side of the stripe fabric. This will give

the fabric more body but is not necessary.

Mark the center of the roof top.

Use a rotary cutter to make the pieces.

Cut 2 windows 3” x 5”

Cut 1 left door panel 3” x 7”

Cut 1 right door panel 1 ½” x 7”

Cut 1 door topper panel 1 ½” x 4”

These dimensions include the seam allowance.

For the door fold under ½” along the inside of the left door panel for zipper placement. Repeat with the right

door panel.

On the back of each fold place a piece of fusible bonding strip and iron in place. Remove the paper backing.

Place one side of the zipper tape under the folded edge. The zipper will be too long. We will shorten that later.

Just position the zipper so that the top is ½” from the top of the door fabric.

Repeat with the other side. Be sure that the fabric is matching.

Iron the door fabric and zipper in place. This step while not necessary is a wonderful way to avoid using p ins

when putting in the zipper. It eliminates the bulges and distortions you may have when pushing a pin through

the thicker zipper tape.

Top stitch the zipper in place. The zipper teeth will show but that is part of the door decoration. If you don’t

want the teeth to show then use a traditional zipper installation method.

To shorten the zipper, use a wide zigzag setting and stitch 4 or 5 times over the zipper teeth. Do this about¼” from the edge of the fabric. When the bag is put together the new zipper end will be hidden in the seam

allowance nice and secure.

Trim off excess zipper tape and you are just about ready to attach the door to your house. But first measure

the width of your door at the top. Now cut another scrap of fabric that is the width measurement by 1 ½”. (1

½” x 4”)

Pin this strip across the top of the door frame covering the zipper tape but avoiding the zipper pull tab.

Stitch in place.

Using a1/2” seam allowance attach this door topper to the top of the door. This will encase the zipper tape and

finish the top edge. Press.

Now press under ½” seam allowance on all edges of the windows.

Press under ½” seam allowance on the door sides and the top of the door. Do not fold under along the bottom

edge of the door. This will be in the bottom seam allowance.

Apply the fusible strips to the folded edges as you can see in the photo.

Remove paper backing. Position windows and door as desired and p ress in place.

For fun and added texture use Coats and Clark Dual Du ty Plus Jeans Topstitching Thread to topstitch the

windows and doors in place.

By using the fusible tape you do not have to worry with pins and will avoid slipping and distortions. The inside

edge of the presser foot was used as a seam guide to sew close to the edge of the fabric. The needle was

moved to the right to get close to the edge.

With right sides together sew the roof pieces to the front and back of the house.

Use a ½” seam allowance.

Use a zigzag stitch to finish the edge.

Press the roof with the seam allowance towards the roof. Top stitch the roof on the back panel stitching

through the seam allowance. The front roof line will receive a different design element.

Place flower buttons on the house front….these will be sewn on later.

With tailor’s chalk draw the stem and leaf lines.

Machine stitch stems and leaves in a bright green. Go over the lines several times so they will be easy to see.

Jumbo rickrack makes a nice addition and gives definition to the roof. Cut one piece for the front of the house.

Add a fusible strip down the center back of the rickrack and iron in place. Again no pins! Position the rickrack

over the roof seam line. Stitch in place. Trim ends.

To make the zipper band cut a piece of stripe fabric 5” x 17 ½” long.

Cut this piece into two pieces 2 ½” x 17 ½ ” long. By cutting the band in this way it will be easier to match the

stripes on either side of the zipper

Mark the center on each side. If you have an uneven stripe repeat allows more fabric for this step to be surethe zipper band pieces match the roof stripes.

To attach the zipper to the band pieces use the same method that was used for the door. Fold under ½” seamallowance on the inside of each strip. Fuse the fusible strip to the folded edge. Remove the paper backing.

Carefully match the stripes on each side of the zipper and fuse in place. Use Coats and Clark Dual Duty Jean

Topstitching Thread to topstitch the zipper to the band.

Once the zipper band has been topstitched pin the band to the top of the roof matching the sides of the roof

panel. Be sure to leave ½” seam allowance then trim excess fabric from the ends of the zipper band. Measurethe width of the finished band. (Should be about 4 ¼” wide)

The denim band that will complete the side and bottom of the backpack will be cut at this width.

Cut 2 denim bands 4 ¼” x 15”

Attach 1 denim band to each end of zipper band using a ½” seam allowance.

Cut 2 straps from denim 3” x 33”Cut 4 loops from denim 3” x3”

Cut 1 handle 3” x 9”

Press under ½” seam allowances along the long edges of the straps, loops and the handle.

Fold so that folded edges match.

With Coats and Clark Dual Duty Jeans Topstitching thread stitch along both sides of the strap using the outsideof the presser foot as the seam allowance. To create this narrow edge you w ill need to move your needle to

the far right.

Using the center mark as a guideline pin the handle and 2 loops with 1” rectangle rings to the top of the back roof. The loops will be placed on either side of the center mark and the handle just outside of the loops.

Because the denim is so thick at this point tack the loops and the handles in place by hand. Too thick to pin.

Consider substituting 1-inch wide cotton webbing for the handle and loops. It wouldn’t have as much bulk as

the denim handles.

Fold the remaining two loops through 1-inch D rings. Tack in place about 1 ¾ inches fr om the center mark.

Stay stitch around the curves on the roof and bottom for the front and back panels. This will be useful when

attaching the band to the back especially if you have to clip the curves to fit the side band.

Pin the side band to the back of the house right sides together. Adjust side seams so the roof seams match the

back. Adjust the band at the bottom of the backpack. Decreasing or increasing the seam allowance as needed

at the bottom of the band. Sew the band ends together. Pin in place. Sew the band to the back. Take your

time going around the curves.

Lengthen your stitch length to allow for the extra thickness of the handle and loops. Don’t f orce the machine.

To help ease your needle over the thick parts use the seam helper below.

The little plastic rectangle on the right was designed to fit behind the presser foot raising it to match

extra thick fabrics such as denim. If you don’t have one of these seam helpers make your own with folded

cardboard. Place it behind your needle. Slowing start to sew and ease the fabric along.

Beginning at the bottom of the back stitch slowly over loops.

Take it easy on the curves. Don’t tell my home economics teacher you saw me sewing over the pins! Speed is

not the goal on th is step so we will ease over those pins.

Getting close to the end; pin the front to the side band matching center marks on top and bottom and side

seams of the roof band. Before you start sewing the front to the rest of the bag OPEN the zipper about 3

inches otherwise you will have a challenge on your hands when it’s time to turn the back right side out!

Thread one strap through the bottom d-ring. Clip in place.

Thread the other end of the strap through the 2 rectangle rings at the top. Adjust to the length desired. Velcro

hoop and loop tape may be added to the straps once the desired strap length has been determined. This is

optional.

One last step on the machine; stitch through the strap at the bottom. Allow about one inch to be folded to the

back of the strap and stitched. Repeat for the other strap.

Sew the flower buttons to the bag and the Tiny House Backpack is ready for new adventures!
