C&S – What do I need to do before the February report?
Everything you need to know based on the
questions being asked by MYP students
Why is Community & Service compulsory?
O Because it gives students an opportunity to ‘make a difference’ and when it is done well, it helps us to instill in students the attributes of the IB Learner Profile.
O Getting involved in genuine Community & Service breeds compassionate, principled, caring life-long learners who will make tomorrow’s world a better place!
First, 2 misconceptions:
1) Community & Service (C&S) is not CAS! C&S is for MYP students and CAS (Creativity, Action, Service) is for DP students.
2) We are not counting hours for C&S! We are looking for learning
outcomes, effort and impact.
It’s not about counting hours, it’s about making the hours
count!

What is a valid C&S activity?
Basically, it is any activity in which you make a positive difference to the community without
expectation of reward.
O ‘Community’ – Bringing people together for a good cause.
O ‘Service’ – Helping out those who need it.(Not doing the dishes, babysitting or cleaning
your room)O Key concepts – Empathy, Awareness, Action
3 types of C&S activities
OIn-school ‘GWA’ C&S activities that are organised by a teacher.
OOut of school C&S activities that are organised by an external organisation.
OStudent-initiative activities.

Examples of in-school C&S activities include:- Acting as a Writing Centre peer tutor.- Involving yourself in the organising committee
of the ‘Run to Overcome’- Selling tickets/doing make-up for a school
production.- School organised beach clean-ups.- GWA Appreciation Dinner.- SEWA Day volunteers.- GWA Green-Goes student environmental group.- Philippines relief day volunteer group.
Out of school C&S activities
Examples include:- Volunteering at K9 Friends.- Volunteering with Room to Read- Volunteering at any recognised

Student-initiative activities
Can be done independently or in student groups with friends – some examples of current initiatives from MYP students include:- Organising care-packages for the children of the
GWA support staff (Grade 8).- Launching an event where GWA students eat like
children in developing countries to raise money and awareness for improved educational opportunities (Grade 6).
- Organising food drives for migrant workers (Grade 9).

What is not a valid C&S activity?
O Babysitting.O Being in a sports team.O Anything that you receive payment or reward
for (credits, clothes, samples etc.)
Basically if your activity is not actively improving lives and does not relate to ‘empathy’, ‘awareness’ or ‘action’ it is not valid. Please ask Mr. Favre if you have questions about this: [email protected]
