Several churches will band together to once again offer trunk-or-treating and other fun activities at the ball field at the old Armory on East Central Avenue Saturday night from 6-8 p.m. Halloween safety The Hoke County Sheriff’s Office issued the following safety tips: Drivers should watch out for children who might dart out from between parked cars. Costumed kids will be walking on roadways, medians and curbs along roads. Be especially careful when entering and exiting driveways and alleys. At twilight and later in the eve- ning, watch out for children who might be wearing harder-to-see dark clothing. Parents should always make sure that an adult or older re- sponsible youth is supervising the trick-or-treating for children under age 12. Before heading out to neighborhoods, parents can check the sex offender registry online at www.ncdoj. gov when planning a trick-or- treat route. It’s best to plan the route ahead and know where kids plan to go for the evening, and know the names of older children’s friends. Make sure older children trick-or-treat in a group, not alone, and tell them to stay in familiar areas on an established route. Teach children to stop only at houses or apartments that are well- lit and never to enter a stranger’s house. Establish a return time and tell them not to eat their candy until they come home. Review pedestrian/traffic safety rules before heading out, and make sure all children know their home telephone number and how to call 911 in the event of an emergency. Pin a slip of paper with the child’s name, address and telephone number to an inside pocket in case a younger child gets separated from a group. Costumes should be made of fire-retardant materials, loose enough that kids can wear warm clothing underneath if the evening is chilly. Costumes should not be long enough to present a tripping hazard, and strips of reflective tape on the costume are a good safety measure if the child will be out after dark. and Gordon Crumpler. Crumpler and his family moved to Raeford in 1960 and opened Crumpler Funeral Home, which continues operating today. He is a member and lifetime deacon of Raeford Baptist Church and has also been an active participant in the Shriners, Ma- sons, Raeford-Hoke Chamber of Commerce and Raeford Kiwanis Club. He and his wife Dayne have three children, including Raeford Police Chief Kemp Crumpler, and many grandchildren. Hoke County Sheriff Hubert Peterkin, who organized the cel- ebration dinner, said Crumpler has been serving as coroner since before he was even born. “He’s in the Library of Con- gress, that is in the books, as the longest-standing elected official in the United States,” the sher- iff said, in comments thanking Crumpler for his dedication to public service. Fayetteville City Councilman Bill Crisp and Peterkin sought the honor for Crumpler, and Board of Elections member Gene Shelnutt had also worked toward getting the governor to recognize the coroner’s many years in office. Chamber of Commerce Presi- dent Daphne Dudley praised Crumpler for his long history of supporting the community. “You are one of the great busi- nessmen and have always been there for the Chamber. Whenever we need something, you always say yes, so we just want to com- mend you on this award. We love you, we wish you much more suc- cess…we want to thank you for all that you do for the Raeford-Hoke Chamber of Commerce,” she said. Crumpler’s work has helped build a better community for future generations, Crisp said. “Every now and then a man comes, a man who serves his community with unswerving loyalty,” Crisp said. “…His imprint is indelibly etched in the sands of time within this community and in this county, and so we honor him for his unusually long history of public service, and we honor him for the man he is. Home Food

(Continued from page 1)the wall connecting Home Food with its neighboring sister store that sells animal feed and farm supplies. Now, people visiting one store or the other often wan-der through the open doorway to explore the other half of the business.

“You get so many people that come in one side and are just creatures of habit. They see that and wonder, well, what’s over here? So it’s kind of something new to see.”

Things haven’t changed much on the feed store side of the operation, but it’s another story in the grocery section.

Where the store used to have shelves of typical grocery items, now honey, fruit and vegetables produced in Hoke County and surrounding areas take up the floor space in Home Food.

“It has been a dramatic change, it really has, from what we were doing to what we’re doing now: focusing more on the fresh aspect of what we have in here, and kind of capitalizing on some specialty products, spe-cialty North Carolina products – jams, jellies, pickles, some different varieties of things,” McNeill said.

Home Food is buying from area businesses like Lyons and Wade Family Farm, Williamson Farms and others, and the Mc-Neill family also grows some of their own produce for sale.

The store has even started canning some of its own pro-duce. Shoppers can pick up fresh beans canned in a Mason jar with a free recipe attached

that came out of the McNeill family’s own kitchen.

The store still offers fresh fish for sale every week, and also offers fresh cuts of beef including ribeyes, New York strips and filets. Home Food offers Moore Brothers natural, pasture-raised beef grown in the Red Springs area.

Revamping Home Food gave McNeill the chance to seek out more local farmers and find out what customers want.

“When I started this change, it made me start doing more research on what I wanted to put in this store and what I wanted this store to be set aside from what other people were doing, and that really opened up some doors for me,” he said.

The change from a full-service grocery helped cut down on the store’s bills in some ways. There’s less refrigeration and heating and cooling to worry about, for instance.

“I have people show up all the time buying plants and seed from me in the spring, grow their product, and then they come by and they want to sell it back to me, so it kind of comes full circle. We know exactly where the product’s coming from,” McNeill said.

The store is also working with the county Cooperative Exten-sion’s Community Supported Agriculture (CSA) program. The extension office didn’t have enough room to run the program, which gets boxes of locally grown produce into the hands of community members, so McNeill offered the store as

The Main Street store has a garden center too.

a base of operations.“We’re both kind of doing the

same thing, providing a fresh, local product for people, and we hope that they support us as well as CSA,” he said.

The store has also tried to keep up with the times by reach-ing out to potential customers on social media.

“It’s nice to see some new faces on Main Street. I see them up and down Main Street as well. Younger, older, kids, no kids, the whole nine yards. I think it’s definitely something positive for Hoke County,” McNeill said.

Home Food’s customers have mostly stuck by the store through the last year.

“I’ve seen our older clientele and older customers come back, and it’s good to see those faces come back. They’ve always come and bought their produce and fresh fish and stuff from

us, and they know what they’re getting and they know they’re getting a good quality product,” the owner said.

The attached Home Food grill, which serves freshly pre-pared hot food, is doing well and is a popular breakfast and lunch spot for people passing by Main Street. The feed and seed store’s additional business selling plants and flowers for growing is keeping pace to the changing of the seasons.

“You try to adapt to the changing of the weather and the seasons. This time of the year, pumpkins, mums, violas, things like that, and then in the spring we’ll fill it back up with all the annuals and perennials,” McNeill said.

This year marked the store’s 96th year of operation, and 2019 will mark the Home Food centennial.
