Crossroads Through Time Heritage Park Jerry Davis grew up in Mark Twain country along the Mississippi River. Wrapping up a career in the Army my family and I found ourselves here near the Arkansas River in Louis L'Amour country. We’ve now been here in Cañon City for over 20 years. Walking the paths of the characters of these great story tellers and of the history books I have read since childhood is an experience worth sharing. So, teaching history through telling stories at the Fremont campus of Pueblo Community College is the perfect "semi" retirement job for me. As a teacher, students connecting with and taking pride in the wealth of local and family histories is a major goal of mine. Sharing the stories of the people and places of this region with the community is part of the purpose of the Crossroads Through Time Heritage Park trails here at the Fremont campus.

Harold Taylor- will take us through time: Harold Taylor and his wife, Christine, moved to Cañon City from the Denver area in 2014 for its great geology, climate and lifestyle. After retiring from a productive career in statistics, including teaching the subject to geologists at the Colorado School of Mines and serving as a quality control engineer at Coors, Harold was able to further his artistic work in lapidary and jewelry making with his business, Taylor Made Arts and Lapidary. Harold’s uncle introduced him to rocks and minerals while he was in high school and he soon began cutting and polishing rocks in his basement and learned silversmithing while studying mathematics at the University of Kansas in Lawrence. He went on to earn a Ph.D. in Probability Theory at Indiana University in Bloomington. Harold’s interest in geology led him to be active with Fremont County Stones ‘n Bones and become the Co-Chairman of the Crossroads Through Time Heritage Park Steering Committee on the PCC-Fremont Campus. Harold was the lead author for the Rocks & Fossils of Fremont County Heritage Guide and has committed much time and effort to the development of the Geology Time Trail on the PCC-Fremont campus. His beautiful and distinctive jewelry and lapidary work is on display most Tuesdays at the Cañon City Farmers Market, other arts venues and online.

The Crossroads Through Time trails are depicted here. The explanation of each of the components and the actual time travel necessary to walk through the trails is a fascinating story of pre-history and history of Fremont County Map: Courtesy Jim Nelson

In 1915 Fremont County adventurer and entrepreneur Dall DeWeese discovered the fossilized bones of a diplodocus in Garden Park, which he donated to the new Colorado Museum of Natural History (now Denver Museum of Nature & Science). DeWeese is pictured as he led the 1916 excavation of the diplodocus which, while too incomplete to mount for display, began the Museum’s impressive collection of dinosaur fossils. Photo used with permission of Denver Museum of Nature and Science. The Fremont County Historical Society has published seven books on the history of the County, from east to west. They are available in several places – Florence Museum and Resource Center, Florence Historical Archives, Florence Library, Royal Gorge Regional Museum and History Center in Cañon City, Prison Museum, The Cellhouse, Chrysalis, Fremont County Administration Building and more. If you go to our website: www.fremontheritage.com they are available for download. A new Self-Guided Tour book published this summer: details of geology and paleontology of the region – Rocks and Fossils.

This new hereitage guide has been compiled by members of the Crossroads Through Time Heritage Park Steering Committee, located on the Pueblo Community College – Fremont Campus, and Fremont County Stones ‘n Bones. Both are all-volunteer organizations, under the umbrella of the Fremont County Historical Society, that cooperate with the Fremont County Heritage Commission to advance understanding of the region’s rich geologic and paleontological heritage. Initial printing of the Guide was assisted by a grant from the Colorado Office of Tourism through the Fremont County Tourism Council.

Crossroads Through Time

Heritage Park Exploring our GeoHeritage and the forces. faces & events that shaped the

landscape around us.

PCC’s Fremont Campus is uniquely located to help educate students and lifelong learners about deep time. The site readily serves as a field laboratory exposing key elements of earth’s geologic history: * Fountain Formation sandstone resulting from the erosion of the Ancestral Rocky Mountains and 150- million -year -old Morrison Formation sedimentary rock from the upper Jurassic period are across US-50. *450 million-year-old Ordovician period Harding Sandstone is directly behind the site. * The 2,300-foot Geology Time Trail (one foot = one million years), now developing, includes an appropriately placed stegosaurus sculpture to help illustrate the concept of Geologic Time – once around the loop equals ½ of the earth’s 4.6 billion year history. Fremont County’s history from the late 1800’s until today includes major paleontological discoveries with 10 “type” specimens of dinosaurs excavated at nearby Garden Park as well as the world’s oldest known vertebrates, for a period of 70 years, discovered and described here in the Harding Sandstone Quarry directly behind the campus! The Geology Time Trail serves as an index to the area’s many interesting geologic formations and provides information on their locations. * Intersecting themes of geologic history, paleontological discovery, ancient cultures, early exploration, shifting borders and the settlement of the west create a rich historic fabric that will also be found in a planned People & Places Trail.
