Hello Quilters
Many of our members had a great time on the trip to
the ―Road to California Quilters Conference and
Showcase‖ in Ontario in January. Collectively we
spent nearly $10,000 on quilting fabric and related
items, not including our food. We had a good time,
learned some new things, perused the vendors and
saw some interesting quilts, wearables and dolls. Our
tour leader and helpers treated us royally. There is
another trip in the planning. Margaret is again the
leader. Go if you can. You will enjoy it.
Our year is winding down. Our new officers will be
elected this month and take over after installation at
the March meeting. Look for the proposed list in this
newsletter. Do come to the February meetings to put
in your vote. These new officers will be working with
the rest of us in getting ready for the quilt show in
January 2011. Please take note of the new date,
January 14-16.
The workshop with Judy Mullen produced some
lovely jackets. People got them almost done. Some
of the finished ones were shared at the January 26
meeting. I still have all my fabric and supplies sitting
on a chair in my living room. I missed that workshop
due to a little health challenge. Thank you for all the
cards and caring comments. It will take some time to
get completely back to normal but the sewing
machine still works OK for me. I am on the mend.
Yours in Quilting
Nancy
At our February program meeting we
are delighted to present an
internationally known quilter, Mary
Mashuta, as our speaker. Mary studied
home economics in college. She has
worked as an interior designer and
teacher. As a teacher she has taught at
the high school and community college
levels. In the early 1970s Mary began
making quilts. Her skills in the use of
color and design have led her to a very
successful career in quilting both as a
teacher and quilt book author. Mary's
beautiful quilts have been shown in a
number of prestigious venues including:
Quilt National, Visions, and Houston
International Quilt Festival, among
others. We look forward to seeing
Mary's beautiful and colorful quilts as
well as hearing about her quilting
journey.
In March our program will be presented
by award-winning quilter and CCQ
member, Marjorie Johnson. Marjorie will
also teach a workshop for us. The
workshop will be free to CCQ members
so be sure to sign up at the February
meeting.

Quilt Show 2011—Countdown: 11 months
We are starting to get going on the show. Please
note the show date has been changed to JANUARY
15 AND 16, 2011, with set-up January 14. This is the
weekend before Road To California, and hopefully
this will enable us to draw some more vendors and
attendees. There will be almost three full weeks
between Christmas and the show. Invitations to
vendors will go out in a couple of weeks. The
Opportunity Quilt should be ready to debut in early
March.
The show committee met in January and developed
a budget. We will again partner with the Garden Club
and will have a simple challenge: pick a picture of a
garden, flower, or flower arrangements to interpret it
in a small quilt (160 inches in perimeter). Pictures will
be supplied by the Garden Club, and sign-ups will
start in February at the business meeting. We are
thinking of offering a workshop on techniques or
inspiration to help you. If you were at the January
business meeting to see the ―whisper‖ challenge
quilts, you saw how widely a picture can be
interpreted. Also at the business meeting we saw
jackets made at the recent Guild workshop, these will
look great in the show.
We hope to have CD’s of the show quilts available for
purchase at the show. I am excited as my show
pictures often have bystanders or are at odd angles!
Better pictures will be good for future inspiration. This
suggestion came from a committee member. If you
see something you would like to have included in our
show, please tell Ursula or me, as there are always
ways to make our show better.
Have fun sewing!!

The art focus group presented their intriguing quilts at
the January 26 Business Meeting. First, Delores
Miller showed the photo with which the two groups
started. The photo was a cluster of buildings with a
tree on one side. Then, the first the participant
unveiled her quilt, and told us what her thoughts had
been while completing their project. She then
introduced the next quilter who had received the quilt
she had made. The next quilter worked only from that
quilt.

REPORT OF THE NOMINATING COMMITTEE
The nominating committee, comprised of chairperson Sue Siefkin, Nancy Galloway, Judy Martin, Kathy
Sandner and Margaret Wolfe, has met and conferred. The slate of CCQ officers and committee chairpersons
for 2010-2011 to be presented to the membership is listed below.
Deborah Miller has graciously agreed to assist the
Membership chairperson, Linda Cover, prepare the
roster for publication and to provide backup to Anita
Hay, Newsletter Editor.
Block of the Month March 2010 Bird
9" by 9"
Step 1 As an option, you may trace the pattern on the muslin. This will stay in the block when it is done, and
eliminates the need to remove the paper.
If you are using the paper pattern, crease sharply on each of the stitching lines. This will make the removal of
the paper easier.
Step 2 Set your machine stitch small—18 to 20 stitches per inch.
Step 3 Starting with unit A, using the colors indicated in the Fabric Requirements above, place a piece of the bird
fabric on the wrong side of section A1, with the right side of the fabric facing you. Pin from the pattern side.
Step 4 Fold the pattern on the line between A1 and A2, exposing the wrong side of piece A1. Trim the fabric at a
scant 1/4".
Step 5 Open the pattern, and from the back of the pattern, align the fabric for A2 on the seam line, right sides
together. Turn over, and pin on seam line. Open the fabric and hold up to the light to be sure that it covers the
area, with enough extra for the seams. Sew on the seam line from the pattern side. The seam should be 1 or
2 stitches longer than the line. From the right side, press the seam.
Step 6 Use the same process to add each of the pieces in numeric order to finish Sections A, B and C.
Step 7 Carefully align the seam lines of Sections B and C, and stitch. This time, stitch all the way to the edge of the
fabric.
Carefully align the seam lines of Sections B-C and A. The most important matching point is the neck just
below the beak. Stitch.
Trim to 9 1/2". If you have used the paper foundation, please leave the paper on so that the block remains
stable until ready to go into a quilt or wall hanging.
Bring finished block to February 9 meeting to enter drawing for all the blocks.
Questions? Contact Anita Hay—[email protected] or 916.397.0632
Unfortunately, the foundation patterns for this block were too large to be included in the newsletter. Please ask me for
the pattern, or print one from our website, www.countrycrossroadsquilters.com.
This block is foundation pieced, and is a mirror image since you will be sewing from the back of the block.
Fabric Requirements: These are not specific, as you will be using pieces that
fit the shapes.
Background
Sky blue
A fat quarter will be
generous. This is used for
A3, A4, A5, A6, A8, B1,
B3, B5 and C1.
Bird
Natural color for a bird (such as
black, brown, blue, red, green,

A 9" square should be
sufficient. This is used for
A1, A7, B2, B4 and C2

made and presented 8 large fund raising quilts and
82 quilts of various sizes to 6 different agencies for
direct distribution to their clients. All in all a very
successful year but, my motto is, "WE CAN DO
BETTER !!". Lets all work together this coming year
to bring our total up to 100 quilts. Cheryl and I look
Warm Wrappings

On January 14, about 8 am, the Storer bus with 35
people aboard left the area bound for Ontario. With
one piece of luggage, a purse full of money and
snacks, an itinerary and a sense of adventure we
were off on time.
After a rest stop, we shopped at the Strawberry
Patch in Bakersfield. The owner faxed our lunch
order to Togo's, where we grabbed our lunches and
boarded the bus. Next, we visited New Moon in
Pasadena. We shopped, and then waited for 2 hours
for one lady to cut out fabric and one of the owners to
take our money. It was late, but we voted to go to our
next scheduled stop, the Fabric Patch in Montclair. At
approximately 7 pm we shopped 'til we about
dropped, found a place to eat, boarded the bus and
went to the Holiday Inn Hotel in Ontario. By 10 pm
we were in our beds with visions of fabric in our
heads.
Road to California Bus Trip
After breakfast Friday, we went to the Convention
Center in Ontario, were greeted by a host, quickly got
off the bus and entered the Show. Rows of vendors
and quilts were in front of us. We looked for and
found 2 quilts by Sue Siefkin…wonderful. We
shopped until we almost dropped (some did). We
went to have dinner, get some rest, think about which
booths to check one more time and fell into bed.
Saturday morning was the last time to see quilts,
vendors and demonstrations. We boarded the bus
with heavier luggage, lighter purses, visions of
projects to come and some tired bodies.
We all give our thanks to Margaret Wolfe for a
wonderful trip!
Yvonne Jones
Note from the editor:
I was one of the lucky participants in the bus trip. I
feel that credit must be given where it is due.
Margaret received a lot of help to organize this trip, in
particular, by Yvonne.
Each of us received a lovingly handcrafted name tag
holder. Margaret told us that the majority had been
made by Yvonne. We also received gifts and prizes
while on the bus which had been donated by several
shops. Someone spent a lot of time asking for and
organizing these donations!
There were snacks (both sinful and healthy) and
beverages available on the bus.
I must say that Margaret and crew worked very hard
to make our trip enjoyable, and they certainly
achieved their goal.

For you hand quilters, here is a website where you can find laptop hoops built by a young father whose
children are so intrigued by the process, they are his helpers!
www.laptophoops.com
Yes, I know it's not a quilting website, but this website is my favorite source of recipes. The biggest problem is
selecting the one you want from all they offer! Their search engine allows you to enter the up to four
ingredients, and to exclude up to four more. As an example, if you want a from scratch chocolate cake that
doesn't have eggs in it, you can specify chocolate, no eggs, no cake mix, with the key word cake, and it finds
119 recipes!
