GLIMPSES OF GLORY
How do we transition from the seasons of Christmas and Epiphany to the season of Lent? Consider this image: smart phones today are equipped with a setting called airplane mode. While flying in this setting, your phone will not provide features like calling, data, Wi-Fi, and Bluetooth. What is accessible is the information on the phone itself.
The Lenten disciplines of giving, prayer, and fasting put us in airplane mode. (Karen Bates-Olsen, et. al.) They serve to empty out our soul from all the extras and the luxuries. The premise being that while we are full of such things, there is no room for God. In our emptiness God comes and fills our hearts with love, renewal, and hope.
How do we transition from the seasons of Christmas and Epiphany to the season of Lent? We go into airplane mode for a while with our Lenten disciplines and let God do the rest.

Cross of Glory February 2016
February begins with Groundhog Day. We will celebrate by exploring
shadows and seeing if our handmade groundhogs see their shadows. We
will discuss what legend says about the groundhog and its shadow and
whether each child wants six more weeks of winter or an early spring. We
will work on graphing our results. We can’t wait to hear what happens
with Punxsutawney Phil and Staten Island Chuck!
Valentines and hearts will be found all over our classroom. The children will
create cards to practice writing and “mailing” in our mailbox. We will play
heart math games together too. Look for lots of red, white and pink!
February is also Dental Health Month. We will be talking about taking care
of our teeth and about going to the dentist. Every child will have a
toothbrushing chart to complete at home and bring back to school for a
special surprise.
This month’s chapel time will cover Jesus’ miracles and how much He loves
us!
Peace,
Janet Kain

News from around the NJ Synod
Lenten Reflection by Bishop Tracie
Bartholomew
What a strange year this has been! It feels
like we were just in Advent, and now it’s
Lent! Too soon! Can’t we fully get through
one season before thinking about the
next? What’s the urgency?
Well, there is an urgency—we get it in
Advent and we hear it again in Lent. We
will listen for it at Easter and Pentecost as
well. The reality that we need our Savior
to come into our world, into our lives, into
our hearts and be made real is an urgent
prayer and plea. We long for the
resurrected Christ to be made alive in our
presence. We hope for the Holy Spirit to
sweep into our world and make it whole.
There is urgency in our life of faith! In
Advent it sounds like this: “Stir up your
power Lord Christ and come”...In Lent we
pray: …“the battle between good and evil
rages around us. Keep us steadfast”…
As the people of the NJ Synod, we join our
voices and our prayers in calling out to
God during times of high anxiety, fear and
uncertainty. But we also use those same
voices and utter those same prayers to
speak to that which causes those feelings.
We remember the promise of God who
sent a Savior into our world. We
remember the actions of that Savior on a
cross. We remember that death did not
have the last word. We remember that
the Spirit of the resurrected Chris is alive
today and enlivens the church.
As God’s people, we proclaim with our
words and our actions the urgent message
that God in Christ has come, still comes
and will come again to our world to make
it whole. We boldly and joyfully live out
the promises of God, share Jesus’ love
with our neighbors, and work together in
the power of the Spirit for the sake of the
world.
Lead Poisoning Prevention
New Jersey’s Lead Hazard Control
Assistance Fund has been impacted in
recent years, and this has had devastating
consequences. Elevated levels of highly
toxic lead were found in more than 3100
young children in New Jersey last year. In
11 municipalities in New Jersey, the
percentage of young children with
elevated levels of lead is actually higher
than in Flint, MI. To learn more and take
actions, visit http://www.hcdnnj.org/lead.
Stop the Cuts Road Trip
Join us in Washington, D.C. on Tuesday,
April 5th, 2016 from 12:30-3pm as we
urge Congress to “Stop the Cuts.” On
Tuesday, April 5th, 2016, advocates from
New Jersey concerned about the needs
for affordable homes will travel to
Washington D.C. for a Congressional
Reception on Capitol Hill. Low-income
families, the homeless and those with
special needs are hurting from the effect
of budget cuts at the same time that the
urgent need for housing still exists. To
learn more about this event, visit http://

Detroit Servant Trip—Summer of 2016
This summer we are sending a group of
senior high youth and adults to Detroit
for a new summer servant trip—Detroit
Hope 2016! The group will gather at Cross
Roads on Sunday, August 21 and leave
bright and early on that Monday for
Detroit. Tues-Thurs are our work and play
days; then we drive back to NJ on Friday.
We’ll be working and staying with
Rippling House, a ministry in the heart of
Detroit that works hard to care for the
poor and those in need in their city. Some
of our synod’s group worked with them
at the ELCA Youth Gathering there last
summer. There is a trip flyer and interest
list you can sign up for at
www.njsynod.org/youth. There is an
interest meeting during the Winter Youth
Assembly.
