COURSE NUMBER: MN8.400 TITLE: Special Topic: Clinical Practicum PURPOSE STATEMENT: The purpose of this course is to provide new registered nurses with the opportunity to advance their professional practice knowledge and skills within the clinical environment of their specific specialty area of practice. This course specifically focuses on specialist skills and knowledge of clinical processes, assessment, treatment modalities and evaluation of the care provided to their particular client group. COURSE NUMBER: MN8.402 TITLE: Advanced Pathophysiology for Health Professionals PURPOSE STATEMENT: This course builds upon undergraduate study and the professional clinical knowledge embedded in practice. The course will explore complex adult and child disease processes in order to support advanced diagnostic reasoning for these client groups. This course assumes knowledge of normal physiological function and directs the student towards a progressive and more critical understanding of altered, complex health states. LEARNING OUTCOMES

COURSE NUMBER: MN8.404 TITLE: Advanced Practice for Disease Management PURPOSE STATEMENT: This course provides an in-depth review of adult disease management, its impact on health care provision and the need for integrated care across all health disciplines and services. Students will reflect on disease management as a complete, rather than fragmented, approach to care, with an emphasis on risk assessment and early intervention that focuses on reducing morbidity in individuals with chronic illness.

Teaching and learning approaches in the course allow students to examine disease management from their own professional, clinical, contextual and service orientations, thus allowing them to develop clinical and professional leadership skills commensurate with their scope and level of clinical practice.

This course also forms part of Nurse Practitioner preparation for those students seeking endorsement with the New Zealand Nursing Council.

LEARNING OUTCOMES

On completion of this course the student will be able to: 1. Examine the global trends in disease presentation and management, identifying

the similarities and differences of these to the New Zealand context. 2. Examine the interrelatedness between acute and chronic disease processes and

their impact on service cost and provision. 3. Explore the cyclical relationship between chronic illness and the social

determinants of health and their impact on the individual, their family, the community and the nation.

4. Examine the essential role that primary health care plays in reducing the morbidity of chronic illness.

5. Understand the epidemiology of chronic illness across the lifespan with particular reference to younger adults and older adults as the two vulnerable populations affected by a changing trend in chronic illness.

6. Explore models of care that support long term care delivery. 7. Assess, plan and manage common clinical presentations using evidence based

frameworks to inform practice in the provision of integrated and individualised care within the legal, ethical and professional boundaries of practice.

8. Provide clinical leadership in evaluating, auditing and developing clinical policy that supports access, equity and quality of care in disease management within the New Zealand Health Care framework and the Treaty of Waitangi.

COURSE NUMBER: MN8.406 TITLE: Advanced Practice to Support Child and Family Health PURPOSE STATEMENT: Advances in health care are initiating changes from an individual/person paradigm to the nursing care of families as a whole (Kaakinen et al., 2010). Arising from this starting point, this course draws on knowledge of the child/tamariki, youth/rangatahi and families/whānau. The child/youth within the family as the centre of health care will be examined and explored from a wide range of perspectives and disciplines. LEARNING OUTCOMES

Within the specialty scope of practice of child and family health the student will, at the completion of this course be able to: 1. Critically evaluate theory, demographic data and national and international

research with regard to how best an advanced practitioner can support the health of children/tamariki and their families/whanau.

2. Examine the biological, social, political and economic determinants that influence the health and well-being of children/tamariki and their families/whanau.

PURPOSE STATEMENT: This course develops theoretical and practical knowledge of breastfeeding, human lactation and infant nutrition to an expert level.

Practitioners are assisted to explore the context of breastfeeding, human lactation and infant nutrition in relation to historical and socio-cultural perspectives, anatomy and physiology, mother - baby dyad and other contemporary issues.

Practitioners completing this course would be capable of providing lactation education and environments that support breastfeeding, and infant nutritional support. LEARNING OUTCOMES

COURSE NUMBER: MN8.420 TITLE: Advanced Practicum PURPOSE STATEMENT: This course is the ‘capstone’ course in the Master of Nursing Nurse Practitioner pathway. Nurse Practitioner students work closely with mentors to achieve the Nursing Council of New Zealand’s competencies for the Nurse Practitioner Scope of Practice. This course is conducted over one year and aims at consolidating the skills that students require for work in advanced clinical practice. Students will work with mentors in the clinical environment, focusing on refining and enhancing those skills that are essential for their area of practice. Working with the competency standards appropriate for their area of practice, students will develop a portfolio of evidence that demonstrates their advanced clinical ability and addresses the required competency standards for their practice. Academic mentorship and clinical supervision will combine to assist the student in practice, utilising EIT Online activities and tutorials, face to face academic contact, and learning in practice. Seminars and workshops focusing on clinical practice will be planned throughout the course. LEARNING OUTCOMES

Within their individual areas of specialty practice, on completion of this course students will be able to: 1. Practice with the clinical model most suited to their practice area in the

2. Demonstrate responsibility and accountability to the level of practice based on the clinical, legal and ethical standards in that practice.
