Meet and Greet Afternoon On Tuesday 18th February we held our Meet & Greet afternoon which was an opportunity for teachers and parents to meet one another and exchange information that may enhance the quality of a child’s educational experience at school. Thank you to the parents who attended, we hope you gained an insight in to how the school day is organised and enjoyed the opportunity to meet and speak with your child’s class teacher.

Alexandra Hewitt and daughter Isabelle enjoyed the family

BBQ and looking at the hall display.

Kayla, Lilli and mum Rose McDonald had a lovely afternoon

together at the Meet & Greet.

Alvin, his mum Amanda, and his little sister Kelsey thought

the sausages were delicious!

It will be the last Meet & Greet that Kristy Grove and her

boys, Jack and Billy, attend before heading off to high school next year.

Alexis and Pat Stivala with mum Karen who are new to the

CPS family, were excited to look around on Tuesday afternoon.

Could you get a cuter picture??? William McDonald and his little sister played on the fixed equipment during the Meet &

Greet.

Mr Whittington cooked the BBQ with the assistance of

daughter Ellie.

In the Classroom: Science lessons in Years 1 and 2 Students in Years 1 and 2 have been participating in a Science unit titled ‘All mixed up’. Over the past two weeks we have been exploring different mixtures and examining their textures, smell, and appearance. When mixing icing sugar, cocoa, and rice bubbles, students discovered they had some of the basic ingredients to make chocolate crackles at home!

Aria Bailey examines her sample of icing sugar to determine

what it is made from.

Jack Frost and Alvin Pearson are excited to measure and

start mixing their ingredients.

Oliver Keith makes sure he levels his tablespoons before

adding them to his mixture.

Owen Moorby is excited by the results of his mixture.

Environmental Club Students across primary have been invited to participate in a lunch time Environmental Club on Tuesdays; covering topics such as working in the school vegetable garden, flower beds, looking after the worms, compost and chickens to learning about what plants to plant in each month. Students enthusiastically learnt about the best ways to maintain quality soil for our plants to thrive in. Next week students will begin chook duties and planting will hopefully begin in our greenhouse.

If you would like to be involved or have any areas of expertise that you could share with our enthusiastic students please contact the school on 4832 1213.

Happily in gardening, Mrs Thorpe and Miss Kemp

This group of environmental enthusiasts are ready to assign

each classroom a new food scrap bin.

Spotted cont. Bastian Huang for consistently thinking of others.

Chivalrous Mr Nedanoski for helping a damsel in distress.

Briah Cluney for conscientious swimming efforts.

Taylor Eason and Dustin Carr making great connections during class discussions on Frankie Fish and the Super Sonic Suitcase.

Caden Locke for sharing his knowledge on cattle and drovers with his class mates.

Charlie Cramp for knowing how much Mrs Whittington loves plants, thank you!

Shae Dumesic and Brax Druett for helping the cleaner find her phone.

Swim Scheme This week students from Years 2 and 3 started the Swim Scheme program held at the Crookwell Swimming Pool. It has been a fantastic week of swimming for all of our students, many of whom are displaying an increased level of confidence in the water. Students have been learning about a range of water safety measures at the beginning of each lesson, taking into account all different types of water environments including dams, rivers, beaches and pools. In smaller groups students enter the water with their swimming instructors to learn swimming skills such as entering and exiting the water, submerging, gliding and treading water. We look forward to more swimming next week!

Georgie, Tommy, Indi, Emma and Huddy are all smiles in the

pool.

Indi Fahey is very relaxed floating on her noodle.

Huddy Hape practises diving through the hoop.

Jordan, Reuben, Alvin, Alfie and Tyler are ready to

demonstrate safe entry into the water.

Wanted - reading parent helpers Infants classes are asking for any parents or carers who may have some spare time in the mornings to assist our young students with their reading. Providing extra opportunities for students to read, allows them to consolidate reading strategies. It also gives students a sense of belonging in the school environment while reading with family members. If you are able to provide an hour of your time any morning of the week, please speak to the classroom teacher. Your time will be much appreciated!

Reading with your children is such a powerful way to bond

and learn the value of reading.

School Photographs – Wednesday 4 March On Wednesday 4th March The School Photographer will visit the school to take class, individual and sibling photographs. Please ensure your child comes to school on that day looking clean, neat and tidy wearing full Crookwell Public School summer uniform. Remember jewellery is not permitted and girls can wear only red hair accessories. Please find attached The School Photographer envelope. These must be returned to the school office by Tuesday 3rd March. From Year 6 to Year 7 Information for students Moving into Year 7 in a NSW Government School in 2021 was attached to the News and Views last week. Completed forms need to be returned to the Administration Office of Crookwell Public School on or before Friday 20th March, 2020.

Infants sport This week, Kindergarten were able to join Year 1 and 2 for weekly tabloids during infants sport. It was a little windy and chilly but that did not deter the students from getting involved.

The Year 2 leaders were fabulous in assisting the younger students in their group and everyone, from the smiles on their faces, had a great time. The tabloid activities are practice for the infants athletics carnival, happening later in the term.

Cristian Huang enjoyed his first sport day with the older

students.

Bronte, Dorothy and Ivy are happy about being in the same

sport group and had fun with the egg and spoon races.

Jordan Tate and Charles Willis showing the younger

students how to use the stilts.

Tenielle Richardson testing how many beanbags she could

stack on Emma Campbell’s head before they fell.

Poppy Snape showed she could balance more than one beanbag on her head while manoeuvring around cones.

Jimmy Haywood Whipp found the stilts a little tricky at first

but eventually got the hang of it.

Leadership badges Last Friday these deserving ladies were presented with their badges for Term 1. Codie Richardson received her class captain badge for 5/6 Magpie, Sophie Watson for Wattle House sports captain and Maddy Wray for 2020 Year 6 Forum representative. Congratulations girls, we know you will do a fabulous job in your new leadership roles within the school.

Codie Richardson, Sophie Watson and Maddy Wray were

presented with their badges on Friday. Elissa Wray proudly pinned Maddy’s badge on her.

Lost & Found: A set of house keys were found Tuesday 18th February on the bottom oval. Please call in to the school office for collection if you think they may be yours.

Stage 1 News Topics Next week, students in Stage 1 will begin sharing news with their class once a week. Students will speak on a variety of news topics to demonstrate their knowledge and understanding of key learning areas covered at school. We ask that you encourage your child to regularly participate, as it assists their speaking and listening skills. Please see the table below for your child’s news day. They think she is the most beautiful baby in the world and are loving every minute of the newborn with many, many cuddles and kisses. Congratulations Mr Nedanoski and Maria!

Welcome to gorgeous little Layla Nedanoski!

Stage 3 “Keeping Safe in the Game’ Stage 3 students registered for an online presentation titled ‘Keeping Safe in the Game’, which occurred at 12pm on Thursday, 13th February. This Adobe Connect session was a 40- minute presentation about the important skills for safer, more respectful gaming. Students explored skills for creating safer gaming environments including; balancing time online, dealing with abuse and cyberbullying, managing in-app purchases and accessing help and support. Not only does this incorporate outcomes from the NSW PDHPE Syllabus, but also contributes to children gaining life skills in this technological age.

The data obtained throughout the presentation found that over 50% of Year 5 and 6 students have been asked personal questions relating to their location, age or appearance from a stranger online. Students now have the ability to determine what appropriate communication is during online gaming, and know to tell an adult, block and take screen shots as evidence if inappropriate communication is evident.

The Chickens Are Here! After great anticipations, our four beautiful chooks arrived back at school to be greeted with bustling excitement from all students. The chicken naming competition, via Facebook, will be concluding today. The four names with the most votes will become our official chicken names! We can’t wait to hear what names you have decided on!

Alec cuddles one of our chickens!

Michael, Jay and Nathan get up close and personal with the

new school chickens.

The hen got the better of Jack.

Reagan, Maddy, Evelyn and Poppy start to learn about keeping happy, healthy hens.

Maintain a neat appearance, including adhering to the requirements of the school’s uniform or dress code policy.

Peer Support Training Peer Support Training for all students in Year 6 will be held on Thursday March 5th and Friday March 6th. The program involves two days of leadership training for Year 6 Peer Leaders who will then work with small groups comprising students from Kindergarten to Year 5. The purpose of the Peer Support Program is to develop understanding, attitudes and skills necessary to help students in their Peer Support groups to:

Enhance their self esteem

Be more resilient

Cope with their changing environment

Foster positive relationships with others

Contribute to the wellbeing of the school community.

Year 10 students from Crookwell High will assist with the training of Year 6 Peer Leaders.

To celebrate the end of Peer Support Training and to enhance the skills learned over the two days, a ‘school sleepover’ will be held on Friday March 6th in the school hall. Peer Support training activities will continue on Friday evening and therefore we hope all Year 6 students will attend. Students will enjoy pizza for their evening meal and a light supper before bed. On Saturday morning, they will have breakfast before being collected by parents sometime between 8am and 9am.

Casual clothes appropriate for group activities are to be worn to school on both training days. It is a Work, Health and Safety requirement that closed shoes be worn. On Thursday and Friday students will be required to bring with them:

a pencil case containing their usual supply of pens and pencils

a sun hat

sunscreen

Students staying on Friday night will also require:

a sleeping bag and pillow

small camping mat if you feel the floor would be too hard to sleep on

toothbrush and toothpaste, comb etc

a small hand towel

Clean Up Australia Day Clean Up Australia inspires and empowers communities to clean up, fix up and conserve our environment. What was started thirty years ago by an ‘average Australian bloke’ who had a simple idea to make a difference in his own backyard has now become the nation’s largest community-based environmental event.

It is hard to believe that this initiative began as the inspiration of one man, Ian Kiernan. An avid sailor, Ian was shocked and disgusted by the pollution and rubbish he continually encountered in the oceans of the world. Taking matters into his own hands, Ian organised a community event with the support of a committee of friends, including co-founder Kim McKay AO.

This simple idea ignited an enthusiasm and desire among the local community to get involved and make a difference. And surely if a capital city could be mobilised into action then so could the whole nation. And so it was that Clean Up Australia Day was born in 1990.

17.7 million plus Australians have donated their time as part of Clean Up Australia activities over the last 30 years.

35 million hours of volunteer time has been donated to Clean Up activities to benefit our environment.

365,000 plus ute loads of rubbish has been removed as part of Clean Up activities.

Of course, Australia’s waste challenges can’t be solved in just one day, so over the last three decades, Clean Up Australia has evolved into an organisation that works with community, government and businesses to provide practical solutions to help us all live more sustainably every day of the year.

Today our focus is as much on preventing rubbish entering our environment as it is removing what has already accumulated.

Crookwell Public School will participate in Schools Clean up Australia Day on Thursday 27th February, 2020. Students from Kindergarten will clean up the school playground, Year 1 and Year 2 students will clean the area immediately surrounding the school while students in Years 3, 4, 5 and 6 will target an area further afield but still well within the Crookwell town boundary. Teachers and Support Officers will accompany and supervise the students in their quest to make a positive difference to our local environment.

To participate, students will need to wear their school uniform and school hat. We encourage students to wear sunscreen and bring gloves and a disposable bag in which to place collected rubbish. These smaller bags of rubbish will be deposited in larger bags that have been supplied by Clean-Up Australia.

We will make a real difference to our local community as we remove rubbish from our environment while participating in the nation’s largest community based environmental event. Let’s get busy to Clean-Up!

Harmony Day Volunteers – Expression of Interest On Wednesday 25th March, Crookwell Public School will once again be participating a variety of multicultural activities to celebrate Harmony Day. It would be greatly appreciated and valued by our school community to have parent volunteers come and share some exciting aspects of your culture/heritage - whether this is in the form of language, traditions, dance, food or art. The day would operate with students rotating around the school in small groups, participating in a mix of activities that celebrate the cultural diversity of our shared community. The individual workshops would run for 25-30 minutes with mixed groups (K-6), of no more than 25 students at a time, throughout the duration of the workshops (approximately 125 students in total over the course of the day). Workshops will commence at 11:45am and conclude around 3:00pm with breaks for recess, where you are invited to attend a catered morning tea with staff, and lunch. Your workshop will run for five (5) sessions. The content of your particular workshop is entirely at your discretion and you will have the support of staff at all times. If you would like to be involved in this exciting school event please return the slip below by next Friday 28th February. We look forward to celebrating with you! …………………………………………………………………

What is A Voluntary School Contribution?

The vast majority of public schools request a contribution from parents each year to supplement existing funding. These contributions allow schools to provide additional resources and learning programs for our students. What Will The Money Be Used For?

The money will be used to purchase resources to support teaching/learning programs for each student across the school.

How Much? The suggested contribution is $50 per child. Please note that this roughly equates to $1.25 per child per week. I cannot stress enough the difference to our school finances that your contribution will make. The contribution fees are within the guidelines set by the Department of Education.

How To Pay

Please place your contribution, with the slip below, in an envelope and return it to the school office as soon as you are able. If you prefer, you may choose to pay a contribution in instalments. A receipt will be issued for all monies received.

We also need some parent volunteers to fill positions on a roster during the day either cooking on the BBQ or selling sausage/steak sandwiches and soft drinks. You will be allocated a 2 hour time slot between the hours of 11:30am-5.00pm. Exact times for both jobs would be confirmed in a roster closer to the event. Volunteers receive a free entry ticket to the races.

If you would be able to spare a couple of hours of your time on this weekend would you please complete the slip below and return it to the school office by next Friday 21st February, 2020.

This is a major fundraising event on our calendar and a great day out so come and join in the fun while raising money for our wonderful school. - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -
