FACILITIESFacilities for cricketers at the Royal Hospital School include seven cricket grounds, two pavilions, six outdoor nets, four indoor nets in the newly refurbished sports hall and the cutting edge BOLA TrueMan bowling machine. A strength and conditioning gym, fitness suite and indoor swimming pool are also available to assist athletic training.

BOLA TRUEMAN BOWLING MACHINEStaying at the cutting edge of training technology is important to us and we were the first school in the country to have a TrueMan BOLA bowling machine. The TrueMan displays a high-contrast LED animation of a bowler on the front of the bowling machine which synchronises exactly with the release of the ball.

The bowler animations are produced by artwork made from real life video footage and so an extensive library of actions and styles of bowling can be built up with any player’s action being able to be reproduced.

TEAMS AND FIXTURESThe school regularly fields 16 teams for boys and girls across all year groups, allowing cricketers of all abilities the opportunity to play and develop. Fixtures at senior level provide pupils with a chance to experience both declaration and limited overs cricket with the juniors tending to play a limited overs format. Junior teams enter into the Suffolk Schools Cup and seniors compete in the National Schools T20 competition for both boys and girls. The 1st XI also have annual fixtures against the MCC where the spirit of cricket can be developed and pupils get to learn to play against experienced cricketers.

GIRLS’ CRICKETGirls’ cricket will enter into its third season this year and continues to grow in participation across all year groups. Girls play a variety of hardball and softball fixtures depending on their experience. This increase in popularity has led to an increase in success and we now have a number of girls who represent both Suffolk and Essex age group squads. This year will be the first year that the senior girls will be entered into the National Schools T20 competition.

TOURSThe next planned cricket tour is in July 2020 where both boys and girls will have the opportunity to experience playing cricket in Abu Dhabi, Dubai and Sri Lanka. This tour promises to be very special and will include opportunities to meet some Sri Lankan legends, play under lights in Abu Dhabi and to compete at Test Match venues in Sri Lanka.

THE CRICKETER TOP 100 SCHOOLSThe school has been featured for the last four years (2016-19) in The Cricketer magazine’s The Playing Fields of England: An A-Z guide to the summer game’s top 100 schools.

Former Essex county cricketer Graham Napier established the Graham Napier Cricket Academy in September 2016 after a 19-year first-class career with the county. The academy, based at the school, is a high profile centre of cricketing excellence with the focus on developing young cricketers to fulfil their potential as well as promoting participation amongst girls and boys at all levels and ages.

As well as coaching pupils at RHS during term time, Graham runs various courses and masterclasses during the holidays that are open to the public as well as pupils who want to refine their skills or keep busy over the break. Group coaching as well as 1-2-1 sessions are available on skills such as batting, bowling, fielding as well as athletic fitness.
