HSC Major Works Showcase

HSC Music Performances

On Tuesday 4th September, I had the pleasure of being in the audience watching our

Year 12 Music students perform their HSC pieces. The performances were diverse

and highly entertaining demonstrating the talent and professionalism of our students. It

was an extremely entertaining afternoon with each student demonstrating skill,

proficiency and personality in their performance. I would like thank Mr Quentin

Bamford for his dedication, expertise and commitment to our HSC music students

and wish them all well in the HSC practical exams held this week.

HSC Major works - TAS and English Showcase

On Monday 10 September, the HSC Major Works showcase was held in the library.

During the evening students, parents, staff and members of the school community

were able to enjoy the major works produced by Year 12 HSC students at

Crestwood High School. This included major works from Industrial Technology

Timber and Industrial Technology Multimedia. There was a great appreciation for

the time, effort and talent that went into creating the major works and the support

of the teachers throughout this process.

It is astounding to see what 16 -18 year olds are capable of designing, creating

and constructing. I wish all students the best for their results in the HSC and

many thanks to their teachers and parents for their ongoing support. In

particular, I would like to thank the Mr Joel Palmer, Mr Matt Smith, Mr Jon

Hinde and Mrs Grace Ragnarsson for their hard work, expertise and dedication.

The success of our students is a clear reflection of the expertise and proficiency

of our teaching staff.

The Hills/Parramatta Excellence In Teaching Awards

Recently two of our teachers were acknowledged at the Hills/Parramatta Excellence In Teaching awards conducted by the

Western Sydney Secondary Principal’s Council.

Mrs Karen Fornari received an award for Excellence in Student Wellbeing recognising her dedication and commitment as a

Year Advisor and a valued member of the Welfare Team. Mrs Fornari has worked closely

with her year group for the last five and a half years since their arrival as year seven

students in 2013. The quality of her work as a Year Advisor is exemplary and evidenced in

how this cohort have developed into a positive, conscientious and collegial group. In

addition to this, Mrs Fornari has worked closely with the Welfare Team mentoring

beginning Year Advisors and effectively relieving as Head Teacher Welfare.

Mrs Justine Clarke received an award for Excellence in Educational Leadership. Since her

appointment as Head Teacher English, Mrs Clarke has lead the English Faculty in the

complete review and improvement of all English programs, assessment and resourcing. In

addition to this, she has also lead the Literacy Team developing the capacity of all teachers

in delivering literacy focussed lessons, developed the highly successful Public Speaking

program and debating program. Mrs Clarke works closely with teachers to improve their

practice and has effectively relieved as Deputy Principal.

Congratulations to both Mrs Fornari and Mrs Clarke and many thanks for your dedication to our school community.

We are coming towards the end of term and Year 12 are finalising their studies in preparation for the HSC next term. They need to be thoroughly engaged in revision and practising HSC style question so they can get feedback and respond to this support. Year 11 begin their end of course examinations next week and so we ask that students respect this and remain quiet around the hall.

Congratulations to our successful debating teams. Our Year 7 team is actually debating our Year 8 team to win the zone final. The successes of our debating and public speaking teams are due to the inspiration and coaching from Ms Clarke and Ms Ragnarsson.

Congratulations to our incoming student leadership team and a huge thankyou and congratulations to our outgoing leadership team. You have been an inspiration for all and the pride you have shown for Crestwood High School has been unsurpassed. We all look forward to hear of your progress in your future lives and careers.

As the school holidays approach, it is important to remember when walking near roads, on footpaths, near driveways and in car parks always take care, watch where you are going (stop looking at your phone!) and:-

talk to your child about road safety. Talk about how to be safe when using roads and footpaths and crossing roads – even on pedestrian crossings – painted strips may give you right of way but will not protect you in an accident.

point out road safety dangers and differences in new environments, during busy times and when others can be distracted. This is especially important when on holidays in different surroundings. Roads, footpaths and pedestrian facilities may look different in holiday areas.

You can find out more at Transport for NSW. http://roadsafety.transport.nsw.gov.au/stayingsafe/children/pedestriansafety.html

Safe riding of bicycles

It is extremely important for you to be a safe rider. This includes being aware of others on the road. Often

it is not necessarily the rider’s fault when accidents happen. Always be aware of dangers from other

pedestrians, drivers and obstacles. See the tips on the following page.

From the Deputy Principal

Page 4: Crestwood Infoline · 7. Don’t Get Distracted Don’t listen to music or talk on the phone while riding. 3. Look, Signal & Look Again Use hand signals to let drivers and other bicyclists

From The Deputy Principal cont…

1. Protect Your Head

Wear a helmet.

6. Act like a Car Dr ivers

are used to the patterns of other drivers. Don’t weave in and out of traffic. The more predictably you ride, the safer you are. Check for traffic. Be aware of traffic around you.

2. Stay Visible If dr iv-

ers can see you, they are less likely to hit you. Use lights when biking at night or in low-light con-ditions.

7. Don’t Get Distracted

Don’t listen to music or talk on the phone while riding.

3. Look, Signal & Look

Again Use hand signals to let drivers and other bicyclists know where you’re going. Look and make eye contact. Don’t assume drivers will stop.

8. Obey all Traffic Laws &

Lights

You can be booked and fined just like a car driver.

4. Stay Alert Keep a

lookout for obstacles in your path.

9. Assure Bicycle

Readiness Is your bicycle properly adjusted? Is your saddle in a comfortable position?

5. Go with the Flow

Bike in the direction of traffic.

10. Do a Quick Bicycle Test

Check your brakes and your wheels. Make sure that “quick release” wheels are properly secured. There must be a bell attached.

Yr 11 B Streetsmart Excursion

On Tuesday 28th August, year 11 students attended the BStreetsmart Youth and Road Trauma Forum.

BStreetsmart is an annual injury prevention program run by the Trauma Services at Westmead Hospital. Its

purpose is to reduce the fatality and injury rates of young people by promoting safe behaviour on the roads.

BStreetsmart provided us with a realistic look at the trauma caused by road accidents and gave us strategies on

how to reduce the risks involved. We witnessed a real-life simulated crash scenario, where representatives from

the NSW Police Force, Ambulance, and Fire and Rescue Services re-enacted the events after a fatal crash. We

also heard personal stories from people who had been affected by road accidents, including survivors with

permanent disabilities and family members of victims who had passed away. As well as the presentation, we had

the chance to visit a range of interactive displays throughout the stadium. The BStreetsmart forum sent a

powerful message about the importance of always being safe and responsible on the roads, not only as drivers

but also as passengers. We heard first-hand about the devastating consequences distractions, speeding, fatigue,

and drink driving can have on the lives of everyone involved. BStreetsmart was a life-changing and emotional

experience that has had a profound effect on us as young drivers. Now, we know to always think twice before

getting behind the wheel, or riding as a passenger, no matter what the circumstances may be.

Hannah Doyle

The B streetsmart event is also available to watch on line for those

parents who would like to share this experience and important

information with their children.

Parent feedback to the B Streetsmart excursion has been very

positive.

“My daughter in Year 11 went to B Streetsmart. I highly recommend everyone to watch this. It’s about safe

driving. Really good. Thanks again Crestwood for putting the kids first” Alison Benson

“My son went too and didn’t stop talking about this”

Industrial Technology HSC Major Projects

We would like to congratulate the students of the Year 12 Industrial Technology

courses for successfully completing their HSC projects in

the focus areas of Multimedia and Timber and Furniture

Industries. The students have worked tirelessly for the

past 3 terms designing, testing, evaluating and developing

their skills during the production of their projects. Timber

and furniture students are required to choose, source and

purchase their own materials including the timber,

adhesives, finishes and hardware.

Our multimedia students developed a wide variety

of project types including short films, cartoon

animations, promotional websites, educational apps and games. Each

student was also required to produce a detailed folio documenting the

project’s design development, selection and justification of materials and

processes and a detailed record of how the project was constructed. They

are then submitted along with 6500 other students across the state and

externally marked by teams of NESA HSC markers. The projects our

students produced were of outstanding quality and they should be

extremely proud of what they have been able to achieve. Some examples of this year’s timber projects

have been provided.

Welfare News

Crestwood High School has developed an online survey for parents to comment

about their child’s experience of bullying while at Crestwood High School. This

survey will be used to inform the school in reviewing its Anti Bullying Policy and to

develop targeted strategies to complement existing programs. The link to the

survey will be emailed shortly to all parents. We encourage all parents to complete

the survey even if your child has not been bullied.
