We’re looking for people who would love to go to all of Writers Week, and whilst they are there, record the talks. You need to- be able to spend all or most of the daytime from 28 February - 5 March at Writers Week in the Pioneer Women’s Memorial Gardens- have done the Basic Radio Skills course, or most of it

If you are interested, please email Nikki [email protected]

or you can call Nikki

Farewell from Manuel Otero...

Saying goodbye it’s not the same that keep in touch. I have been part of Radio Adelaide for almost the entire time that I have living in Australia and I’m not planning to stop now. I was part of Amistad the second week after my arrival to this country; but for the last year I have been more involved with this beautiful family. Being the music program coordinator for a year has been one of the most special experiences of my entire live and I am very grateful for the opportunity. Deal-ing with the volunteers in this role has been extremely rewarding. I’ll take all my memories and anecdotes of this year away with me.

I’m not saying good bye, I’ll say see you around. I’ll be part of Radio Adelaide all my life… just in a different role. (Presenter and producer for Amistad)

I know that I leave you with a beautiful and charismatic person that will maintain this job in the high standard that I received it and maintained for the last year.

Kat the ball is in your hands now…

Cheers,

Manuel Otero

*Editor’s note* Manuel gave me the task of choosing a photo of him for the VOLtage...There were so many to pick from, but this one has to be in my top favourite “Manuel Moments!”

Welcome back Kat McGuffie...Kat McGuffie returns to Radio Adelaide on February 15th.

After spending a year with her daughter Audrey, Kat is ready to jump back into Program Coordinator - Music seat!

Invitation...Please come along to a “Thank you Manuel /

Welcome Back Kat” Lunch

Friday 19th February from 12:30pmat Radio Adelaide

See you there!

February Tech ReportBy Anthony Gibbs

One doesn’t just get viruses during winter; in fact we had a recent case of illness here at the station. I’m fine by the way, thanks for asking. It was of course a computer virus outbreak, or to

be more correct a Trojan/Worm mostly on the back computers during January. As luck would have it, while it was a little annoying, it didn’t do any real serious damage. Which was just as well, given that the McAfee virus scanner we use at the University didn’t pick it up at all. That has of course now been rectified; with info passed on and new virus definitions deployed (we had a fairly new variant of the Worm that wasn’t being picked up using the old definitions). However, this does highlight the need to be careful and observant (thanks to the volunteer that initially picked this one up) and to also maintain good security software on ones own personal computers. Now that McAfee does detect and stop the Worm, the amount of potential infections has been a steady and growing number and it’s not like this is the first time our anti-virus software has stopped infections on any computer within the station. What this means, is that various people have infected computers at home and are transferring those viruses via USB memory sticks or data CD’s or are downloading something from the Web that they shouldn’t be. So make sure that your home PC has anti-virus, either a commercial product or a free one like AVG or AVAST! As well as something to deal with Trojans/Worms like Search & Destroy or Malwarebytes. Plus, don’t forget to apply the security updates from Microsoft, etc, most of the times these Trojans/Worms get into systems via a security hole that was patched months, if not years ago.

New Scheduling Request FormDo you have a new promo for your program? (All of you should!) Your latest interviewee did a station ID? Want your theme put into the left hand side of the Dinesat screen rather than your instant play page? Or anything else you think should go into the scheduling for others to play?

Well the requests still go on the bottom clip outside Darren & Peter’s office, but there is a new form sitting on the on-air shelf to help get your request across more effectively.

If you have any questions or are not sure about something please see Darren.

Back on The WireThe return of The Wire on February 8 means that once again we get our daily dose of independent news and current affairs. Friday’s program produced in Brisbane has a new producer Faith Valencia. She joins the national team with Shevonne Hunt in Sydney and Annie Hastwell and Catherine Zengerer and the volunteers here in Adelaide. The Wire, daily at 5.30pm

Making the NewsThe close of 2009 and the start of 2010 has seen some pretty big news stories…Copenhagen talks, a state election looming and on going com-munity battles like the Chelsea cinema sale and St Clair reserve land swap.

You’ll have heard those stories, and more on Radio Adelaide Breakfast News with a new team of presenters. Every summer while the journalism students are on break, Radio Adelaide volunteers prepare and present the morning news.

The current team have consistently presented bulletins to a very high standard, working professionally, diligently and accurately – great job! They continue until early March when the next group of Uni SA students commence in the news room.

Training Newsfrom Training Manager, Nicky Page [email protected]

The new generation of trainers is thriving at Radio Adelaide. Chrissy Kava-nagh and Casey Briggs have taken our basic course, condensed it into 4 days and delivered it to all their new Student Radio broadcasters. Mean-while the old guard, (Sarah Tomlinson) has the first 2010 group up and running in the 13 week Basic Radio Skills Course. It is great that this group includes several people from our ethnic broadcasting shows. We know that you’ll do your best to help anyone asking questions about anything. We have all been there ourselves, wondering how to do something and having to ask another station worker.

We HAVEN’T raised our fees this year, so my job continues to be strategiz-ing to bring in the money and keep the whole project up to standard. We were thrilled to win a CBAA Award last year for our partnership with Music SA, and that will continue.

Our two University courses start on March 1st. Journalism students from Magill will run the daily news bulletins, and I am pleased that Kylie Ryan will be looking after them again. Kylie is a graduate of the course herself. Then the third year Bachelor of Media students will pick up their first semester shows of MediaRites and Y, led by their teachers Anna Gillam and Charli Bedford

Meanwhile Sarah and I are designing short courses for TRAX FM in Pt Pirie and Wow FM in Semaphore. That’s all for now

TRAINING TIP Are you a heavy breather on air? Try to take in a good

big breath BEFORE you start talking, with an open mouth, and do it AWAY from the mic. Then you have plenty of breath for speaking and the listener doesn’t

hear your big gasp for air.

Did you Know....

All the swans in England are prop-erty of the Queen.

An elephant trunk has no bone but 40,000 muscles.

Crocodiles swallow stones to help them dive deeper.

Dogs and cats, like humans, are either right or left handed... or is that paws?!
