» Specific – Start outby thinking about yourdreams. Do you want toget out of debt? Build anemergency fund? Startor increase retirementor education savings?Decide what your priori-ty is and then hone in ona specific aspect of that

priority. For example, ifyour ultimate goal is toget out of debt, resolveto completely pay offone credit card by mid-year. Want to boost yoursavings? Resolve to setup an automatic banktransfer from yourchecking account toyour savings accountevery month.

» Measurable – Makesure your resolutionaddresses how you willmeasure your progressand results. For exam-ple, if your resolution isto understand your cred-it and finances in 2012, awebsite like CreditRe-port.com, that allowsyou to keep tabs on your

Succeeding in collegeis about more than beingsmart. It’s about howstudents manage time, themselves and theirstudies, according to Dr.Bob Neuman, formerdean of academic devel-opment at MarquetteUniversity.

“For all the talk aboutenormous college debt, parents of younger stu-dents need to know somebasic facts,” Neumansays. “The sooner par-ents understand them, the sooner families cantake steps at home toprepare for college andminimize their debt. It’sa process that shouldbegin early, certainly infreshman year of highschool, even in middleschool.”

High school habitsintensify in college

Neuman speaks fromlong experience. Formore than 25 years, heworked one-on-one withthousands of students, many struggling despiteexcellent high schoolgrades.

“Student problemsstem from not being ableto manage themselvesand their studies. Plustheir lack of organizationdefeats them daily in avariety of ways,” hesays. “The result? Takinglonger to graduate anddriving up family debt.”

Fact: Nearly 70 per-cent of college studentstake longer than fouryears to complete a four-year degree, increasingthe cost of college by 25percent or more – whiletuition and fees risedramatically. Fact: Near-ly 40 percent of studentsstill haven’t graduatedafter six years. To sparefamilies such sizabledebt, students mustgraduate on time. Par-ents can help.

From the first day of

high school, parentsshould make clear thathigh school is a crucialstepping-stone to col-lege. What high schoolstudents learn or do notlearn decides collegesuccess. And high schoolhabits, good and bad, intensify in college. Par-ents should use the highschool years to helpteens develop good studyand self-managementhabits.

Success requiresmore than beingsmart

Families expect highschool graduates withexcellent grades to sailthrough college. As thedismal graduation num-bers reveal, college iscurrently beyond the“study know-how andpersonal capabilities” ofmost students.

That’s why Neumancontends success re-quires more than beingsmart. He paints a quickpicture of what happenswhen time skills arelacking:

» College provideslots of unstructured timefor independent study.Students can’t manage it.They waste time and fallprey to distractions.Study time disappears.

» Professors tell stu-dents what to study out-side of class. But stu-dents are clueless aboutwhat’s entailed to “ac-quire and process” newinformation. It’s farmore than simply read-ing a chapter. Plus, learning takes time.Students can’t fit studyin.

» Students quicklyfall behind in classes, sothey cram for tests.Cramming fails; there’s

too much to know.Lack of time manage-

ment leads to droppedcourses, changed ma-jors, extra years, andmore complicated prob-lems. Plus, time manage-ment is only one of manykey reasons students failto graduate on time anddrive up debt. Neumansays, “Students don’tknow they have seriousproblems. Even if theydid, they wouldn’t knowhow to ‘fix’ them on theirown.”

What parents can doto help

Neuman says parentsshould talk often withteens and preteens tohelp them understandthat students are facingserious problems in col-lege. Then get commit-ted at home to developgood daily habits.

To aid the effort, Neu-

man has written a book,“Are You Really ReadyFor College? A CollegeDean’s 12 Secrets forSuccess.” It’s a guide forparents and teens topractice winning strate-gies in middle and highschool. The book is avail-able only online at Ama-zon, other online book-sellers, and at www.Get-CollegeSmart.com.

To get started, Neu-man suggests a few waysto build time manage-ment skills:

1. Does your teenstudy every subject ev-ery day, whether or notthere’s “assigned home-work”? Set the tone inyour house: There’s al-ways something to study, review, or preview. Youand your teen shouldwork out a quiet studytime for each day. Stickto it and create a habit.

2. Are teens over-scheduled? Does studyget squeezed out?Pushed to the end of theday when teens aretired? Together, rein inactivities and map outtime for study, sports, lessons, etc, in a dailycalendar.

3. Electronic/cyberdistractions suck upenormous amounts oftime. Together, set rea-sonable limits. Agree tono digital distractionsduring study times.

Knowing that majorproblems exist in collegeis a starting point. Par-ents should intervene, guiding their middle andhigh school students tomake good daily deci-sions, acquire self-man-agement habits, anddevelop solid study strat-egies. Some teens’ studytechniques haven’t ma-tured since sixth grade. They literally won’tmake the grade in col-lege – and the stakes arehigh.

one of life’s most difficultmoments - at a time whenyou are thinking clearly. There are a few points toconsider as you begin thisprocess:

1. Have a plan as to howyou will share your wishes. Will you have things writ-ten down? With whom willyou be talking?

2. Create an environ-ment that is conducive tolistening. It is usually help-ful to sit down with yourloved ones and try to be atthe same eye level.

3. Share the informationin small segments. Avoidapologizing for the in-formation you are sharing. These are your wishes forone of life’s most impor-tant moments.

4. Allow time for yourloved ones to process in-formation and respond. This is one of the mostimportant things you cando. They may have ques-tions or feelings to sharewith you, but may needtime to process your de-sires.

When couples endtheir marriage, theyoften believe the di-vorce decree is the finaloutcome.

Nevertheless, theremay be more to do. Onearea of confusion is theeffect divorce has onyour relationship withyour debt repayment. Ifyour ex-spouse wascourt-ordered to payjoint debt, are youaware of your obliga-tions?

Ideally, accountswere closed and debtstransferred to thespouse ordered to pay. Ifthis didn’t happen, hereare some suggestions.

Acknowledge you arenot divorced from debtyou owe. Card issuersand banks expect you tohonor your paymentagreement. They stillconsider the account ajoint account. Don’tassume debt is beingpaid by your formerspouse because of thedecree.

What should you do?First, order your creditreport to check the sta-tus of the debts. If notpaid, take action toavoid bad consequences. If you can discuss theissue civilly, contactyour ex-partner. Doesyour ex intend to pay? Ifso, when? If you can’tdiscuss this in person,do it in writing or com-municate through anattorney, without delay.

If there is no dis-cussion, or the debt isfar behind and no pay-ments are in sight, takecourt action. Protectyour credit. Contact thebank. Bad credit affectsmany things, includingyour future interestrates. Take action toprotect your futurefinancial health.

Unfortunately, youmay have to make thepayments and try tocollect repayment fromyour former spouse incourt. Are you preparedto do so, if necessary?

With February beingNational Heart HealthMonth, it is important tounderstand the mouth-body connection betweenyour oral health and youroverall health, specifi-cally your heart health.

Though the reasonsare not fully understood,it is clear that gum dis-ease and heart diseaseoften go hand in hand. Upto 91 percent of patientswith heart disease haveperiodontitis (inflamma-tion and infection of theligaments and bones thatsupport the teeth), com-pared to 66 percent ofpeople with no heart dis-ease. The two conditionshave several risk factorsin common, such as

smoking, unhealthy dietand excess weight. Somesuspect that periodontitishas a direct role in rais-ing the risk for heartdisease as well. Bacteriafound in both gum andheart diseases are simi-lar. And inflammation is acommon denominator forboth diseases: inflamma-tion of the gums andhardening of the arteriesis actually an inflamma-tory process.

To maintain the bestoral health, you shouldestablish and maintain ahealthy mouth. Thismeans, along with annualmedical evaluations, brushing and flossingdaily and visiting yourdentist regularly.

Life is full of un-certainty and change, and it’s possible, evenlikely, that you will beresponsible for yourown finances at somepoint. For many, thefinancial impact ofsignificant life changes, from the good, likemarriage and children,to the not-so-good, likedeath and divorce, isoften a costly after-thought. While divorceand death are difficultpossibilities to acceptor anticipate, they arechanges that come withmany financial implica-tions. This holds espe-cially true for womenwho typically outlivetheir male counter-parts. According to theNational Association ofState Treasurers Foun-dation, 90 percent ofwomen will be solelyresponsible for theirfinances at some pointin their lives.

However, despite thelikelihood of eventuallyliving this new finan-cial reality, less thanhalf of women (45 per-cent) and men (41 per-cent) have a contingen-cy plan in place shouldsomething happen, according to researchby TD Ameritrade, Inc.

“It’s not always theeasiest conversation todiscuss with your part-ner because it forcesyou to think aboutworst-case scenarios,”says Lee McAdoo, di-rector of Women’s Ini-tiatives at TD Ame-ritrade. “But you’ll findthat discussing yourfamily finances andsetting goals togethercan also give you peaceof mind.”

Life transitions areoften times unexpectedand highly emotional,

which can make deci-sion making more diffi-cult. For those reasons,it’s best to plan ahead.

Here are 10 sugges-tions to help you makesure you can effective-ly handle your personaland family finances:

1. Create a detailedhousehold budget.

2. Compile all yourfinancial documents, make copies and storethem with your attor-ney or place them in asafe deposit box thatyou both can access.

3. Conduct an inven-tory of marital assets.

4. Determine med-ical expenses and otherannual costs for yourfamily such as activ-ities fees for your chil-dren and gym member-ships.

5. Review all yourdebt, including mort-gages, student loans, car loans and creditcards. Obtain a currentversion of your creditreport at least once ayear.

6. Make sure eachperson is aware of howyou file your tax re-turns and your tax fil-ing status.

7. Discuss long-termsavings plans and goals, including retirementand college savingsplans.

8. Review beneficia-ry designations in yourwill and update if nec-essary.

9. Consider employ-ee benefits for eachperson.

10. It can be helpfulto have an attorney orfinancial adviser re-view financial docu-ments and give youadvice should you de-sire it.

People don’t enter into marriagethinking it will fail, but unfortu-nately, many marriages do. If youfind yourself on the brink, StevenR. Jaeger of The Jaeger Firm,PLLC, offers suggestions to keep inmind.

1. If there is domestic violence, get out. Protect your safety andthat of your children. Don’t put upwith violence in any form. Obtainan order of protection or otherorders from the court. Do the bestyou can in a bad situation. Takecare of yourself. Get safe, thenproceed.

2. Where the situation is intoler-able, but not marked by violence, you need to plan. Then you need toplan some more. You may not knowhow the process works. It’s not agood idea to rely on what happenedin someone else’s situation. Everycase is different. You need to beguided by a person trained andexperienced in dealing with domes-tic situations. Get legal help. Thefinal outcome will likely be affect-ed by what happens early in theprocess.

3. Gather your detailed financialinformation. Make a list of your

financial accounts and your debts.Don’t forget the account numbers.Locate and copy your last fiveyears of tax returns. You may wantto videotape your hard assets –furniture and the like.

These are things you shouldn’tdo while you plan:

1. Never try to hide your incomeor assets. You will be required tofile some sworn statements withthe court. If you don’t tell the truthunder oath in these written docu-ments and you get caught (whichyou will), you’ve not only placedyourself in a bad position with thejudge forever , you’ve also commit-ted a crime. It’s not worth the risk.

2. Don’t count on immediatefinancial support from yourspouse. Eventually, you may get itby agreement or through a courtorder, but it might be a long timecoming. Watch your money. Make abudget.

There are many other importantissues to consider. Consult a profes-sional, and look before you leap.

We’re not completelyout of the woods yet whenit comes to winter weath-er, but now is the time tostart thinking about get-ting a new pool or reno-vating your existing one.

“If you want to installa new pool or need reno-vation work done, now’sthe time to schedule it oryou may not get into yourpool by June,” said SamIonna, owner of S.I. PoolCare.

S.I. Pool Care featuresfiberglass pools by BlueHawaiian. They’re avail-able in various colors, arestronger and more flex-ible than other types ofliners, and come with a35-year warranty.

According to Ionna, the advantages of fiber-

glass over vinyl liner andgunite pools are clear.“Compared to vinyl, thereare no liners to replace,no tears or holes in liners,no fading, no floating ofliners with ground water, and liners have a 12- to15-year warranty, withonly the first 2 or 3 yearscovered at full warranty,”he said.

Ionna adds, “The onlyadvantage a gunite poolhas over fiberglass is thatyou can make the poollarger. Cost, strength, flexibility and warrantyare all on the side of afiberglass pool.”

If you already have apool that needs somework, S.I. Pool Care hasyou covered there, too.Renovation services they

offer include installing anew liner, pump or filteror adding a heater or saltgenerator. You can alsoresurface your gunitepool with fiberglass andget a 25-year warranty, opposed to the one-yearwarranty you’d get if youmake plaster repairs, atabout the same cost. Fi-nally, think about replac-ing, refurbishing or ex-panding that concretepool deck for the days ofsummer entertainingahead.

S.I. Pool Care is at 3145Dixie Highway in Erlang-er. They’re open 9 a.m. to8 p.m. Monday throughFriday and 9 a.m. to 5p.m. Saturday. Call 859-331-4110. Or visitwww.sipoolcare.com.

Technology is wonder-ful – when it is simpleand works.

Anyone who’s everhad to run both a PC anda Mac, in order to beable to use the applica-tions they need to un-derstand that the tech-nology we depend on tomake our lives easiercan sometimes compli-cate things.

Fortunately, there areplenty of ways – somelow-tech, others leading-edge – to simplify yourtech life.
