+BRAINSTORMING

nMost popular technique for creating ideas

nDeveloped by Alex Osborn, published in the book “Applied Imagination” (1963)

nTechnique in which a group of persons create ideas together.

STAGES OF BRAINSTORMING

+1. Creating teams and selecting the team leader

nThe team must select a team leader in charge of:n Explain the problem to the team.n Moderate the team and the sharing of ideas.n Remind the team members to not evaluate the

ideas yet. No criticism

Page 8: CREATIVE PROCESS · CREATIVE PROCESS nSTEP 1: Identify the problem or challenge. nSTEP 2: Selection of 1 or more creative techniques to generate new ideas. nSTEP 3: Ideas are arranged

+2. Generation of Ideas

n Define the number of ideas that we want to reach.

n Determine the time limit.

n Each team member takes turns to share an idea.

n Each idea must be numbered.

n Write down the ideas.

n If there was a difficulty generating ideas, the leader must help by asking questions like ¿What?, ¿Who?, ¿Where?, ¿How?, ¿Why), etc.

+RULES FOR GENERATION OF IDEAS

2. Freedom of speech and thought.

3. As much ideas as possible

nThere are two reasons to wish a lot of ideas.nFirst, it seems that obvious, habitual, already-

used, impractical ideas come first to the mind, so the first 20 or 25 ideas are likely to be neither fresh nor creative.

nSecond, the longer the list, the more you haveto choose, adapt or combine. In some sessions, the goal is to achieve a certain number of ideas, on the order of 50 or 100, before the end of themeeting.

+3. Make copies

nAt the end of the session, the list of ideas should be on a clean paper and you must make copies for all the team members.

nThere is no specific order to list ideas.

+4. Evaluation

nThe team must discuss the ideas.

nThe weird ideas may turn into something practical.

nIdeas are submitted to a process in which they can become real or not

Page 13: CREATIVE PROCESS · CREATIVE PROCESS nSTEP 1: Identify the problem or challenge. nSTEP 2: Selection of 1 or more creative techniques to generate new ideas. nSTEP 3: Ideas are arranged

+4. Evaluationn To do the evaluation, ideas can be divided into 3 groups:

n Immediate utility ideas. Ideas that you can use immediately.

n Areas to explore more widely. These ideas need to be investigated, followed, thought, discussed more widely, etc.

n New approaches to the problem. These ideas suggest new ways of looking at the problem

n IMPORTANT: The evaluation is not done on the same day as the brainstorming session. This makes the brainstormingsession more free (without the fear of immediateevaluation) and allows for an incubation time of more ideas and a time to think about the ideas that have arisen.

+SITUATION – DEFINING THE PROBLEM

nPrepa Tec Garza Lagüera is a school located in the south of the city.

nThe school is big as it owns more tan 90,000 meters of terrain where you can find buildings with classrooms, a library, the cafeteria, the gym, the football field and many Green areas.

nThe classes start at 7:30am and normally end at 2:30pm, except for some groups that end at 3:30 pm

+SITUATION – DEFINING THE PROBLEM

n The school has more than 1000 students that daily use all of the buildings and school spaces, but there is a big problem: Each time there is a class change the school transforms:

n “La Placita” is filled with trash

n The tables in the classroom are filled with papers and dirt.

n You can find forgotten items in the classrooms such as books, bottles of water, pens, jackets, and even laptops!

n The chairs of the library and the classrooms end up all disorganized.

n There are dishes, cups and used napkins all over the tables in the cafeteria.

What can we do to end this problem?

+GENERATING IDEAS - POST IT!

n Select one leader in your team, he will be in charge of writing and taking pictures.

n In your teams, you will create a list of all the possible solutions to the problem.

n Select a whiteboard, or corner of the room for your team.n Place all the post its in the paper.n You have 15 minutes to generate at least 40 ideas. (can be more than 40,

not less)n Each generated idea must be written in a POST-IT, and then pasted in the

Wall; therefore, you must have at least 40 post-its pasted in the room, so try to be organized!

n At the same time, the Team leader, will be filling the list data in a piece of paper handed by the teacher.

n Be creative! Write everything that comes to your mind, doesn’t matter how crazy it may sound.

n When you finish, take a picture of all the post-its in the Wall.n 10 MINUTES
