NarrativeMedicine,HistoryofMedicine,VisualThinkingStrategies,andUseofTheatricalMethodsinMedicalTeachingaswellasnewlyinspiredteachinggoalsamongworkshopparticipants.ConclusionWorkshopfeedbackshowsareceptivenesstomedicalhumanitiesamongeducatorsandagrowinginterestinincorporatinghumanities-basedtechniquesintomedicalteaching.KeyWords:MedicineHumanitiesTeaching_______________________________________________________POS-03CapitalCityKnits:HighlightingFoundationalNeedsinMedicineTylerE.James,UniversityofOttawaFacultyofMedicineAndreaC.Bakker,UniversityofOttawaFacultyofMedicineEdwardLeeOttawaisoneofthecoldestcapitalcitiesintheworld.Unfortunately,thismakeslifeverydifficultfortheunderprivilegedmembersoftheOttawacommunitythatcannotaffordtopurchasewarmwinterclothing.Pooraccesstowarmclothingisasocioeconomicbarrierwithprofoundimpactonanindividual’shealth.TohelpalleviatethisinequitywehavecreatedCapitalCityKnits.CapitalCityKnitsisaregisteredcharitythatusesanetworkofvolunteerstoknitwarmwinterhatsforunderprivilegedcitizensofOttawa.Withhelpfromcommunitysponsorsweprovideourvolunteerswithyarn,needles,knittinglessonsandonlinevideotutorials.Oncehatsarecompletedtheyaredistributedthroughthepre-existingdistributionnetworksoflocalsoupkitchensandshelters.Mostofourvolunteersaremedicalstudents.Medicalstudentsareaccustomedtoworkingwithinabiomedicalframeworkofdisease,howeverwithunderprivilegedpopulationsfoundationalneeds,suchasaccesstowarmclothing,foodsecurityandhousing,canoftenbemoreinfluentialintheindividual’shealthandwellbeing.Throughthetimeandeffortputforthbythesestudentstheimportanceoffoundationalneedsishighlightedandthestudentgainsadeeperunderstandingofhowtoaddresssuchneedseffectivelywithintheircommunity.Inourfirstyearofoperationwehaveraisednine-hundreddollarsindonationsanddonatedoverfifty-fivewarmwinterhatsproducedbyanetworkoftwelveactivevolunteers.Inthecomingmonths,weplantoexpandtheprogramtoinvolveothercommunitymembers.Keywords:socioeconomicbarrier,knitting,underprivilegedpopulations_____________________________________________________POS-06EmpathyChangeduringPhysicianAssistant(PA)EducationEllenD.MandelDMH,MPA,MS,PA-C,ClinicalProfessor,PaceUniversity,DepartmentofPhysicianAssistantStudies,NY,NY.WilliamSchweinlePhD,AssociateProfessor,UniversityofSouthDakota,HealthSciencesandBasicBiomedicineBiostatistician.Purpose:ThisresearchinvestigatedempathytrendsamongPAstudentsthroughtheireducationincludinggenderdifferencesandspecialtyjobinterest.Thisresearchpartiallyreplicatessimilarstudiesofmedicalandotherhealthprofessionals’students.Methods:TheJeffersonScaleonPhysicianEmpathywasadministeredtoPAstudentsthreetimesinthis33monthprogram.Datawereanalyzedusingbothparametric(ANOVA)non-parametric(binomial)methods.Results:Atotalof239surveyresponses(200femalesand39malesfromthegraduatingclassesof2009thru2013atanortheasternuniversitywereanalyzed.Sixty-fourpercenthadlowerJPSEempathyscoresattheendoftheirdidactictrainingthanthemedianscoreatthetimeofmatriculation(p=.007whilethedifferencebetweenempathyscoresfromyearstwoandthreewasnotsignificant(p=.25).Womenweresignificantlymoreempathetic(Mean=5.00)atthetimeofmatriculationthanmen(Mean=4.71,p=.007)whilebothgendersappearedtoloseempathyinaparallelfashionduringdidactictraining(p=.80).Fifty-onepercentoftheresponsesincludedaninterestinnon-technicalspecialties,23%wereinterestedintechnicalspecialties,and26%wereundecided,didnotrespond,orindicatedthattheyhadinterestinbothtechnicalandnon-technicalspecialties.

POS-09ProfessionnalismandSocialAccountabilityDavidPonka,MCCM,CCFP(EM),FCFP,MSc,UniversityofOttawaJessNgan,MD,UniversityofOttawaDougArchibald,Phd,UniversityofOttawaBrendanWong,MD(c),UniversityofOttawaSharonJohnston,MD,LLD,UniversityofOttawaThelinksbetweenprofessionalismandsocialaccountabilitycontinuetoevolve.Moreprecisely,ourunderstandingoftheselinkscontinuetoevolve:socialaccountabilityishistoricallyattherootofmedicalprofessionalism,butitisonlymorerecentlythatorganizationssuchastheAssociationofFacultiesofMedicineofCanada(AFMC)arecallingforare-examinationofthisimportantlink.TheDepartmentofFamilyMedicineattheUniversityofOttawahasrecentlyfocusedonprofessionalismforitsfacultydevelopmentprogram.Butitislesscleartowhatextentthisincludessocialaccountabilityasasub-domainofprofessionalism,andtowhatextentfacultyanddifferentcohortsoftraineesagreeontheimportanceofthissub-domain.Weconductedamixed-methods,sequential,explanatorydesignstudytoexplorethisrelationshipinourDepartment,usingapre-validatedinstrument(Blackalletal.)thatexploresanindividual’semphasisondifferentaspectofmedicalprofessionalism.Ourresultswererevealingforseveraltrends:

• FacultywhotooktheuOttawa“EssentialTeachingSkills3–Professionalism”coursehadanoverallgreaterappreciationforallfacetsofprofessionalismcomparedtofacultywhodidnottakethecourse;

• InternationalMedicalGraduates(IMGs)appeartohavealesserappreciationfor‘altruism’comparedtonon-IMGs;

• Residentsenrolledinourglobalhealthstreamorhavingservedinunderservicedcommunitieshadagreaterappreciationfor‘honourandintegrity’tehanthosewhowerenot.

Wearenowintheprocessofconductivequalitativeinterviewswithbothresidentsandfacultytofurtherelucidatetheseresultsandtoexplorethenotionofsocialaccountabilitymoreprecisely.Thesewillbeanalyzedintimeofthepresentation.Itisimportanttounderstandcohortdifferencesintheemphasisonsocialaccountabilityifwearetodesigntargetedprogramstopromotethisimportantcomponentofprofessionalism.
