It has been my pleasure to serve as Chair of the Board of Trustees of the Missouri Colleges Fund during this past year.

One of the distinct privileges of serving as Chair of Missouri Colleges Fund’s Board of Directors is having this opportunity to thank you for your support of independent higher education in Missouri. Since 1952, charitable support by businesses and foundations has helped sustain Missouri’s private colleges and universities and allowed them to strive for quality far beyond what tuition revenue alone would allow.

The Missouri Colleges Fund offers donors a unique way to make one gift in support of 17 outstanding non-profit colleges and universities. Our donors are partners in preparing more than 85,258 students to enter the workforce and contribute to the economy. Each gift strengthens the ability of our member institutions to educate talented students regardless of financial circumstances, to provide challenging programs and to help students achieve their goals.

As we look toward 2015, we know challenging times are still ahead of us. It will take an enormous effort on the part of our board, staff, our loyal supporters and our member institutions to preserve and advance independent higher education in Missouri.

We are grateful to our donors recognizing that the partnership between education and business is crucial for the success of individual students, their families, our communities and our state.

Joel Manzi is from Cincinnati Ohio and a sophomore Biological Chemistry major at Evangel University. He was valedictorian of his high school graduating class. Joel has received Departmental and Founder’s scholarships and is listed on the Dean’s List at Evangel. His extracurricular activities

include Senate Representative for Student Government Association, Chemistry Lab Assistant, Students for a Sustainable Future (founding member), Sigma Zeta Research Society, and Convoy of Hope volunteer. “After graduation, I plan to complete a master’s program in public health and also will study to become a physician. I hope to work with underserved populations in the developing world, particularly in the field of infectious diseases and developmental health.”

Profile of the Missouri Colleges Fund, Inc.Mission The Mission of the Missouri Colleges Fund is to acquire resources to help educate students in member private liberal-arts colleges and universities.

History and Purpose The Missouri Colleges Fund (MCF) was incorporated in 1952 as a partnership of private enterprise, entrepreneurs and the member independent colleges and universities in the Show-Me State. For 63 years, MCF has been a leader in building communications among its member institutions and partners with businesses and foundations that mobilize collaboration and financial support. It enables these institutions to accomplish more through this joint effort than they might acting individually.

Gifts Go Directly to Support Students All unrestricted support the member institutions receive from the Colleges Fund is used for need-based financial aid for qualified students unless otherwise directed by the donor. Recipients of these scholarships are selected by the member colleges, not by the Fund.

MembershipThe member schools are independent baccalaureate degree-granting liberal arts and comprehensive colleges and universities in the State of Missouri, accredited by the Higher Learning Commission of the North Central Association of Colleges and Schools.

Distribution of Funds Undesignated funds are distributed equally to member institutions. The Fund accepts contributions designated for one or more institutions and distributes gifts in accordance with the donor’s wishes.

Legal and Tax Status The Colleges Fund was formed in 1952 as a non-profit corporation. The Fund is classified as a public charity under section 509(a) (2) of the Internal Revenue Code and is a 501(c) (3) tax-exempt organization. All contributions to the Fund are tax-deductible up to the limits prescribed by the law. Our Federal ID Number is 43-0680952.

Solicitors Business members of the Board, college presidents and chief development officers make solicitation calls on behalf of the Missouri Colleges Fund without compensation from the Fund.

Diversity Statement The Missouri Colleges Fund is committed to a policy of non-discrimination and equal opportunity in hiring and in administration of all its programs. The Missouri Colleges Fund does not discriminate on the basis of race, religion, color, national origin, gender, sexual orientation, age, disability or on any other basis that would be in violation of any applicable federal or state law.

Operating Budget The Board of Directors approves a budget which is underwritten by equal assessments paid by each member institutions. Gifts to the Fund are not used for the administration of the Fund.

Annual Audit Our fiscal year is January 1 through December 31. The financial records are audited annually by Graves and Associates, CPA’s, of Jefferson City.

National Affiliation The Missouri Colleges Fund is affiliated with the Council of Independent Colleges/Foundation for Independent Higher Education (CIC-FIHE) which is a national partner in a network of member state and regional associations that represent more than 650 private colleges and universities.

50 Years And Counting

This past year several companies joined a growing list of donors who have supported independent higher education in Missouri for more than 50 years:

Vincenzio Fabrizio attends Maryville University majoring in Math Secondary Education. Vince is on the Dean’s List and a member of the National Honor Society. He is a peer tutor, a University Seminar Leader, and was chosen for Math Team Competition at the community college for Parkway South. “I want to teach high school math. When I was in high school I

realized that if I were a teacher, I would do things differently. Now I realize the need for empathy with the kids and I have a desire to make a significant difference.”

Janae Jackson is a sophomore nursing student at Missouri Baptist University. She grew up in the west suburbs of Chicago and is the youngest of three children. In high school, Janae graduated in the top 25% of her class. She was a member of the National Honor Society and was on the Volleyball and Track teams. At Missouri Baptist, she is on the Dean’s

List and is a manager for the women’s and men’s Volleyball teams. “My career goals are to become a registered nurse and to specialize in labor and delivery.”


GIVING OPPORTUNITIESUnrestricted Gifts

Unrestricted gifts have played an essential role for our colleges and universities since the founding of the Missouri Colleges Fund in 1952. These important gifts have a profound impact on the ability of our institutions to meet their changing needs.

All undesignated funds are used by member colleges and universities to provide need-based financial aid for students.

Teachers First Scholars Program

For the past fifteen years, many school districts in Missouri have been faced with a critical teacher shortage due primarily to record retirements of experienced teachers. The independent member colleges of the Missouri Colleges Fund are excelling in their efforts to respond by graduating properly certified teachers ready to take their place in the elementary and secondary schools in Missouri.

Since 1998, the TEACHERS FIRST Scholars Program has raised more than $4.8 million for need-based financial aid to outstanding students who are returning to the classroom to teach in areas of child and family education, special education, elementary, middle school and secondary education.

STEM Scholars Program

Studies reveal that most eighth and tenth-grade students in Missouri score lower than proficient in math and science.

The goal of the STEM Scholars Coalition is to make Missouri a national leader in math, engineering, technology and science education. Since World War II, math, science and technology have been responsible for more than half of America’s economic growth.

The STEM Scholars Program raise financial aid to underwrite science, technology, engineering and math scholarships at our member institutions.

First Opportunity Scholars Program

During the next several decades, the United States will experience a major demographic shift affecting college enrollments and corporate employment. By 2050, the population will reach nearly 400 million people, with new immigrants and their children accounting for approximately 80 percent of that growth.

As the nation’s demographics change, there will be a significant and increasing number of low-income, first generation, minority and new American students enrolling in college and preparing for the work force. The First Opportunity Scholars Program aims to foster increased college access and financial aid for these students.Jesse Marks is a senior

Mathematics major at Central Methodist University. Jesse’s achievements in college include CMU Dean’s List, Dr. Glenn R. Joyce Memorial Award for outstanding performance in science, the Dr. Richard T. Bond Award for outstanding performance in mathematics, the Clyde & Hazel Blattner Mathematics Award, the Kappa Mu Epsilon Mathematics

Award, and the Central Methodist University Department of Mathematics Award. He has completed a National Science Foundation funded Research Experience for Undergraduates working on simulation modeling at the Gulf Coast Research Laboratory. Jesse is a member of the following honor societies: Kappa Mu Epsilon, Omicron Delta Kappa, Alpha Chi, and Alpha Lambda Delta. Jesse has been selected for the Science Undergraduates Laboratory Internships program through the Department of Energy to research at the National Renewable Energy Laboratory. After graduation, Jesse plans to attend graduate school to research applied mathematics.

Molly Dwyer attends Westminster College. She is a junior majoring in Business Communication. Molly was Student Body President of her high school class and was a member of the National Honor Society. At Westminster, she is active in Student Government (president), Student Ambassadors, Campus Activities Board (president),

Service Corps, Student Foundation, and Kappa Kappa Gamma Sorority. “I hope to attend graduate school and study some form of strategic communication. My sights are currently set on marketing.”

The Commerce Bancshares Foundation has been a supporter of the Missouri Colleges Fund for 59 years. With their grant of $10,000 to the Fund for 2014, they underwrote scholarship support to students with a special emphasis on the TEACHERS FIRST SCHOLARS Program.

Edward Jones continued their leadership grant in the amount of $22,000 for 2014. This grant provided scholarships to students who are studying in a business-related field.

EMERSON has been a supporter of the Missouri Colleges Fund for 57 years. With their grant of $16,000 for 2014, they underwrote scholarships to students majoring in a business related field.

The Enterprise Holdings Foundation continued their support of $15,200, to provide scholarships to students studying in a business-related field.

The Monsanto Fund renewed their leadership grant of $25,000 in 2014 to provide scholarships to first opportunity students majoring in STEM.

In 2014, Novus International increased their leadership grant in the amount of $17,000, to provide scholarships to students majoring in science-related disciplines.

The Sprint Foundation renewed their leadership grant of $10,000 in 2014 to provide scholarships to first opportunity students majoring in STEM.

In 1974, the UPS Foundation established an endowment fund with the Foundation for Independent Higher Education (FIHE). Since that time, more than $45 million has been provided to FIHE-associated independent colleges for financial assistance to outstanding students. In 2014, the Missouri Colleges Fund received

$41,225 to underwrite 17/$2,425 UPS Scholarships at MCF member colleges and universities.

Wells Fargo Advisors continued its support in 2014 with a grant of $20,000. This grant provided scholarships to students majoring in accounting, business, economics, finance and related disciplines.

Garrett McDowell attends Fontbonne University and is a Math Secondary Education major. In high school, Garrett was a member of National Honor Society, Gold Renaissance and is an Eagle Scout. His participation with basketball, baseball

and soccer earned him 2nd Team All-State, First Team All Conference, and All-Region Goalie. At Fontbonne, he is active in Omicron Delta Kappa, Pi Lambda Theta, FCA, Student Ambassador and Student-Athlete Advisory Council. “After graduating I plan to become a high school math teacher and basketball coach. I want to inspire kids in the classroom as well as pass on my love for basketball.”

Jojo Howard attends Park University and is a senior Early Childhood Education major. She is listed on the Dean’s List and is a member of Alpha Chi National College Honor Society. “Becoming a teacher has always been my desire. I remember as a child, living in the orphanage center, I often found myself helping the younger sisters and brothers

with their homework. It brought me joy when I saw the smiles on their faces, the looks in their eyes as they gained insight. It motivated me to keep helping them when they became more interested in what they learned. I felt that I did something good. Those pleasant feelings gave me the desire to become a teacher. I believe that as a teacher, I can give back to the community.”

Forrest Drury is a senior at Southwest Baptist University majoring in Social Science Education. In high school, Forrest participated in football, wrestling, track and community band. He received the Male Athlete of the Year Award, All State wrestling, Coaches Award, All-Conference Honorable Mention, and All-State Track and Field. He was awarded the Most Valuable Player Award in wrestling and football. At Southwest Baptist he is a pole vaulter on the

Men’s Track Team and is involved in the FCA. “After graduation, I plan to teach high school social studies and coach.”

Amanda Martin graduated in 2011 as Salutatorian of her high school class at Calvary Academy in Springfield, Illinois. She is currently a senior at Hannibal LaGrange University where she is studying Elementary Education. She is a member of Pi Lambda Theta, one of the oldest and most prestigious education honor societies. She is also a member of the Student Missouri

State Teachers Association. She has been on HLG’s Dean’s List every semester and has received the Rod Martin Leadership Scholarship. She tutors children ranging from kindergarten to 9th grade at the Caring Hands Tutoring Program in Hannibal, Missouri. She has coached Upward basketball and volunteered for many missions and service projects during her time at Hannibal LaGrange University. She plans to become an elementary teacher with hopes of furthering her education.

BreAnna Legan attends Drury University majoring in Graphic Design and Environmental Studies. In high school, BreAnna was ranked first in her graduating class and received numerous awards including Alexander Hamilton Citizen Achievement Award, Megan Meier Anti-Bullying Award, and Scholastic Art and Writing Gold Key Award. At Drury, she is active with ONE Drury,

Think Green Environment Club, and the Visual Communications Program. “I will combine my skills in graphic design and web communication with my passion towards the environment in a way that can create positive change. I hope to work in the nonprofit sector focusing on environmental activism, and also supplement my creative side through travel writing.”

Alexis Bailey attends William Woods University. She is a senior Biology major. Prior to William Woods, Alexis attended Mesa Community college in her hometown, Mesa, Arizona. Her awards include Summit Student Leadership Award, Arizona Communication Association Certificate of Merit and Phi Theta Kappa Honor Society Distinguished Member Award.
