COURSE DESCRIPTIONSex and gender differences exist in the manifestation and prevalence of many conditions and diseases apart from reproductive function. These include but are not limited to cardiovascular disease, immunological disorders, neurological diseases, musculoskeletal diseases and others. Yet many clinician training programs neglect to integrate this information across their curricula. This program will focus on integrating medical knowledge of sex and gender differences in health and disease into undergraduate medical school curricula.

COURSE LEARNING OBJECTIVESUpon conclusion of this program, participants should be able to:

1. Articulate the need to integrate sex- and gender-based competencies in medical education and training.

2. Identify gaps specific to sex- and gender-based concepts in physiology and pathophysiology in existing medical school curricula.

3. Develop sex- and gender-based medical competencies for integration into medical education.

4. Provide practical mechanisms to integrate sex- and gender-based medical competencies into teaching strategies.

Attendance at this Mayo course does not indicate nor guarantee competence or proficiency in the performance of any procedures which may be discussed or taught in this course.

INTENDED AUDIENCEDeans of medical education and directors of medical curricula and residency training programs, health professions educators who plan curricula for medical students, medical students/staff, residents or practicing physicians interested in women’s health, and sex- and gender-based medicine.
