Wheels on the Bus

Lesson 1

Literacy1. Gather students together on the rug or in their chairs.

2. Display Wheels on the Bus.

• Have students locate the front and back covers.

• Read the title and illustrator aloud and point to each word as you read.

• Explain that this is a traditional song from long ago. We are not sure who wrote it first, so there is

no author on cover.

• Discuss the illustration on the front cover. Have students predict what the book will be about.

3. Sing the words of the book as a song, and invite students to sing along.

4. Introduce the theme, All the Parts. Notice aloud that the song told us about different parts of the bus.

5. Encourage students to listen for parts of the bus as you read the book again. Stop to discuss each part

of the bus (wheels, wipers, horn, doors).

• Ask, “How does it move? What words and pictures show you how it moves?”

• Have students use the words and pictures to create movements for each part.

• Choose one student to teach his or her movement to the group.

Lesson 2

Phonemic Awareness and Phonics

1. Gather students together on the rug or in their chairs.

2. Read the title of the book and focus on the word bus.

3. Have students listen for and repeat the /b/ sound in bus. Explain that /b/ is spelled with a b (draw a

capital and a lowercase b on the board).

4. Have students go on a “Bb hunt” as you read The Wheels on the Bus.

• Students can “bop” up and down on their bottoms each time they hear other words that start with

/b/ (beep, back, baby).

• Encourage students to review the pictures on each page for more /b/ words (blue, butterfly, boy,

bus stop, and bag).

Extension: Challenge students to find something in the classroom that starts with /b/. On your signal,

have students “bop” over to the item and share what they found with the group. Create a Starts with B

board that contains words and pictures from the “Bb Hunt.”

Learning ActivitiesArt Activity1. Prior to the lesson, make copies of a simple map of your town or a fictional place.

2. Explain that the bus in the book goes through the town. That is different from going around the

town, under the town, or over the town. 3. Display the map of your town or a fictional place. Trace your finger through, around, under, and

over the town. 4. Seat students at their tables. Give each student a copy of the map and a set of crayons.

5. Have students draw a path on the map for the bus to drive through the town.Math Activity1. Prior to the lesson, cut out circles, triangles, and rectangles from construction paper.

2. Display each shape. Help students identify and describe each shape (This is a circle. It is round.).

3. Display several pictures of buses. Help students identify the shapes on the buses (The wheels

are circles.).4. Seat students at their tables. Give each student a sheet of construction paper and several shapes.

5. First, have students arrange the shapes to create a bus. Then, have them glue the shapes to the

construction paper.

Social Studies Activity1. Prior to the lesson, create a Bus Route page for each student by writing the sentence frame, The bus

goes to the (insert a rectangle). three times on a sheet of paper.2. Explain that buses travel through cities to bring people from place to place. Discuss the places

students like to visit in their town (school, library, mall, park).3. Display the Bus Route page. Help students use the sentence frame to talk about where they would

like the bus in their town to go.4. Seat students at their tables. Give each student a copy of the Bus Route.5. In each rectangle, have students draw a place for the bus to stop. Help students label the places

as needed.

Beautiful illustrations and extra-large print both engage students and support vocabulary development.
