ABOUT CRDG SUMMER PROGRAMSCRDG Summer Programs at the University of Hawai‘i at Manoa continues our 50 year commitment to summer education, exploration, and adventure through our internationally recognized program for students entering grades 1–12 . In a variety of courses designed for curious young minds, students experience hands-on STEAM activities, from building and programming LEGO robots to designing rollercoasters from recyclables . With field trips to science labs on the university campus and natural sites around the island, student scientists build research techniques . Incorporating reading, art, science and geography, students virtually travel the world to experience different cultures and cuisines . Animation, drama, programming, and journalism courses bring fun and creativity together to cultivate students’ imaginations . Join us in fun-filled learning!
Inquiry-based instruction and hands-on learning in the classroom, laboratory, field, studio, and theatre are the cornerstones of our program . Classes are led by qualified teachers and teacher-assistants to ensure a safe learning environment where students immerse themselves in activities designed for curious young minds .

Course Selections and Grade Levels• There are no prerequisites for any of our classes .
• Grade levels indicate the grade students will enter in fall . A course labeled
grade 4 is for students who completed grade 3 and will enter grade 4 .

• Grade levels are suggestions to help parents select appropriate courses .
Courses are designed for the grades indicated, but students may sign up
for any class as long as they are able to keep up with the activities and are
prepared to be with students who are not their age .

CancellationsCLOSED (FULL) COURSES
• If a course is full, we will contact you to place the student in an alternate
course . If there is no suitable course available, we will refund you in full for
that course (see Refund Policy) .
• You may request to be waitlisted for a closed course . If space opens,
admitted students will be notified by phone and/or email .
CANCELLED COURSES
• Any course may be cancelled due to low enrollment or other factors . We
will evaluate our courses at the end of General Registration and contact
you if your course(s) are cancelled .
• If the student cannot be placed in an alternate course, you will receive a
full refund for the cancelled course (see Refund Policy) .
Refund Policy• For withdrawals, notify us before the refund deadlines .
o May 3: Refund Deadline for Core Programs, Summer Adventures A, and Driver’s Education
o June 21: Refund Deadline for Summer Adventures B and C
• Submit a completed WH-1 tax form* by the last day of Summer Programs
(July 24, 2020) . *As a state agency, CRDG requires a completed WH-1 tax
form to process all refunds .
• For withdrawals received by the deadline, paid tuition will be refunded
(minus an administrative fee of $100 per class or $20 per after-school
week) . Full refunds will only be given for closed or cancelled courses (see
Cancellations) .
NO REFUNDS issued for withdrawals after the refund deadline or if your WH-1 form is not received before the last day of the program.

Cultural Connections: How to Make an Apple Pie and Wow the World! GR 1–2This course will incorporate a variety of subject areas such as reading,
mathematics, science, art, and geography to engage students in projects
inspired by the famous children's book, How to Make an Apple Pie and See the World . With hands-on activities like how to make butter out of cream
and how sugarcane turns into sugar, kids will experience a fun and engaging
adventure that will show them how to make an apple pie and see their world .
IMPORTANT: Notify the office of any food sensitivities or dietary restrictions,
as sampling food will be an optional part of this class .
CORE MORNING PROGRAMS
Introduction to Robotics withLego WeDo GR 1–2The Lego® Education WeDo 2 .0 system is designed to provide young students
a simple introduction to robotics and mechanical design . This course uses
Lego®WeDo to allow students to explore and develop science, technology,
engineering, and math, as well as language arts and social studies skills
through project-based activities . Working in pairs, students will use these
skills to design, create, and program moving models, all while enhancing their
creative and problem-solving abilities .

Hawai‘i Nature Study Program GR 1–8Through activities from CRDG’s Hawai‘i Nature Study program, Hawai‘i’s
outdoor environment becomes the students’ classroom and laboratory .
Students will explore the world of plants, insects, small animals, and Hawai‘i’s
reef and shore . Investigations into different organisms will follow their
life cycles, test their responses to various stimuli, observe their different
behaviors, learn what places them in different groups, and determine what
foods or nutrients they require . The learning experience is enriched through
the integration of art, group projects, games, and field trips that explore tide
pools, gardens, streams, and laboratories .
Students do not need to have taken previous courses to enroll .

Drama: Summer Stars on Stage GR 3–6In this fun, introductory drama course, students experience the confidence-
and team-building processes of creating and staging a scripted play . Students
explore some singing and dancing, but the main emphasis is on the joy and
excitement of acting on stage and performing for a live audience . Students will
cultivate creativity through simple theatre games and improvisation, audition
for roles, learn stage directions and theatrical performance techniques, hone
characterizations and character relations, and utilize concentration and focus in
rehearsals . Students may also help design/create props and costumes for use
in the show . At the culmination of the program, students will present a polished
evening performance for staff, faculty, fellow students, family, and friends .
CORE MORNING PROGRAMS
Summer Games: Let’s Play Sports GR 1–3By incorporating active play and good sportsmanship, Summer Games fosters
a healthy learning environment for young athletes . Participants will learn
the fundamentals of different sports such as soccer, basketball, flag games,
scooter games, and tennis (actual sports covered may vary) . Students will also
participate in games, activities, and challenges to improve their coordination
and ability, develop their confidence, and practice teamwork . This course
prioritizes safety and requires appropriate dress (shorts, t-shirts, and sport
shoes, such as athletic or jogging shoes) . Sunscreen recommended .

Little Journalists GR 6–10Experience what it’s like to be a working journalist in this collaborative,
hands-on course . Students will develop critical research skills by conducting
interviews, gathering information, and examining a wide range of sources .
Over the course of program, they will become young journalists—writing
articles and captions, capturing interesting and informative photographs,
creating layouts, and, most importantly, meeting deadlines . Using all of their
newly acquired skills, students will produce a weekly digital newsletter for
distribution to every Summer Programs family and teacher .
CORE MORNING PROGRAMS
Exploration in Mixed Media: Creator Space Advanced GR 4–7Creator Space Advanced is geared towards students who enjoy creating art
by hand . This studio class builds on pre-existing student knowledge and is
collaborative and project-driven . Individual pieces will be inspired by weekly
prompts and demonstrations where we will use a variety of techniques and
materials . This studio environment is designed to support and inspire our
artists .

Robotics with VEX GR 7–10No previous robotics experience is required .
Using the power of the VEX Robotics® as a base, students will design and
build their own moving robots to complete a set of goals and engage in
friendly head-to-head competition with other students . Students will learn
about engineering and engineering problem solving in an engaging, hands-
on manner that will motivate and inspire them to complete each project .
This class is suitable for all students with varying learning styles and levels .

Creative Programming with Scratch GR 1–3Students will be introduced to the basics of programming through projects
that explore creative arts . Using elements of design, drawing, music, and
dance, students will create interactive art, stories, animations, and more using
a programming language developed by MIT Media Lab called Scratch . This
course will encourage students to imagine new possibilities of what they can
do with computers, express themselves creatively with new technologies,
and explore computational ideas through personally meaningful projects,
all while learning valuable computer programming concepts .
STEM Workshop: Bubble, Launch, and Melt GR 1–2Did someone say STEM? Come explore science, technology, engineering,
and math! We will focus on the process and have FUN all along the way as
we experiment with bubble solutions and blowers, launch paper rockets, and
build solar ovens to make melty s'mores . This class will wow students through
other "magical" experiments and challenge students in science competitions .

CORE AFTERNOON PROGRAMS
Exploration in Mixed Media: Creator Space GR 1–3Creator space is a mixed media studio art class where we will explore and
learn about different art elements and techniques with an emphasis on using
recycled materials . Each week, we will create original art pieces built around
a theme or concept . At the end of their five weeks, our young artists will
have a basic understanding of the different elements of design (line, shape,
color, size/scale, texture, composition, and hierarchy) and how to apply them .
Cultural Connections: Hawai‘i’s Mixed Plate GR 3–5Join us on a cultural adventure as we explore the food, games, celebrations,
and traditions of the different cultures and countries that make up Hawaii’s
mixed plate . Using a variety of subject areas including social studies,
mathematics, science, art, and geography, students will reflect how their own
backgrounds contribute to our cultural diversity, travel virtually to different
countries, and explore different cultures through art projects, food tasting,
language, games, and more . For their final project, students will select a
specific culture or country and present a fun activity or food to share with
the class .

Robotics with Lego EV3(Upper Elementary) GR 3–6No previous robotics experience is required .
Students will learn to become programmers and engineers by using the
Lego Mindstorms® EV3 2 .0 system to design, build, and program sensing
and moving robots . By working in groups, students develop their skills in
teamwork, communication, and logic to devise creative solutions to assigned
challenges .
CORE AFTERNOON PROGRAMS
STEM Workshop: Science Olympics GR 4–6In this hands-on class, students will exercise their creative minds, strengthen
their engineering and communication skills, and apply STEM knowledge to
real world applications . Students will be divided into teams to prepare for
events related to scientific processes and thinking skills, science content
knowledge, and application of science and technology . Teams will work
together to solve a problem (egg drop, music makers, gummi bear catapult),
or construct vehicles (planes, boats, cars) or structures (towers, bridges,
etc .) . At the end of each exploration phase, teams will compete to see who
performs best in the challenges!

Minecraft: A Virtual Learning Adventure GR 4–6Minecraft® is one of the most popular open-world video games, providing
limitless opportunity to build, discover, and problem-solve . In this interactive
course, students will participate in a virtual learning adventure within the
Minecraft® environment . Students will approach gameplay from a new
angle, working in collaborative groups to tackle projects and learning how
to think critically about their own work . Students will create themes and
storylines and meet their assigned objectives . More experienced players
will be encouraged to delve deeper into game design and development,
modding, and level design .

CORE AFTERNOON PROGRAMS
Jump Ahead in Algebra GR 6–8This course, for incoming middle school students, will bring fun to learning
mathematics through hands-on, interactive explorations and games . Used
together with innovative instructional strategies, these activities will help
students gain confidence in their mathematical abilities as they develop
understandings important for learning algebra . This course will nurture a
positive attitude and a new perspective toward mathematics . Students will
be amazed by the foundational skills and processes they develop!
The materials in this course are associated with a curriculum project at the
Curriculum Research & Development Group . Students in the course may be
invited to participate in additional mathematics activities associated with
video recording for the project .
Animation Studio: Let’s Get Animated GR 7–10Join us to explore the basics of computer animation . Students are introduced
to storyboarding, character creation, and storytelling, while designing their
own scenes and characters . They will also be given the opportunity to learn
basic audio recording and editing . The final animated videos will include
music, sound effects, and dialogue . So, come and join us, and let’s get
animated!

Driver’s Education: Classroom Instruction GR 10–12June 8–22, 8:30–11:30 a.m. Complete your 30 hours of classroom instruction in 2 weeks!
Emphasizing the techniques of defensive driving, this course equips students
with the skills necessary to be a safe and sensible driver . By creating a “Skills
Project Book,” students take a proactive role in learning the rules of the road,
thereby aiding their development as young drivers .
This course covers only the thirty hours of classroom instruction required
by state law . Students must also complete six hours of behind-the-wheel
instruction separately to meet the state teen driving requirements . The course
instructor is offering a special rate of $215 (regularly $315) for the behind-
the-wheel instruction to students registered in this class . Behind-the-wheel
registration and payment (to Excel Driving School) will be collected in class
by the instructor .
We recommend that students be at least 151/2 years old by the start of the
class . Students do not need their driving permit to enroll in this course .

Investigators GR 4–8Students will be part of a structured learning experience around a weekly theme .
Each week includes opportunities to stay physically active, get creative with
art and cooking, work on STEM challenges, and participate in exciting field
trips . Cool off from the summer heat with water play days!*
Session A: One with Nature (Lyon Arboretum, hike local forest trails,
make terrariums)
Session B: Kitchen Concoctions (KCC Culinary, food science
experiments, cooking competitions)
Session C: Keiki Entrepreneurs (develop, pitch, create, and sell a
product at the Class Economy Fair)
Seekers GR 1–3Students will engage in weekly field trips and daily physical education, art
projects, science experiments, and other activities focused around a central
weekly theme . Through project-based learning, students will apply critical
thinking, problem-solving, teamwork, and self-management skills to solve
real-world scenarios .*
Session A: Bugs, Insects and Creepy Crawlers (Honolulu Zoo,
Meal Worms, Earth Worms and Butterflies)
Session B: World of Color: (Art Explorium, color science
experiments, artistic masterpieces)
Session C: Oceans Alive: (Waikiki Aquarium, build and race boats,
explore sinking and floating)
Challengers GR 4–8This course is designed to physically challenge students in a variety of
environments and activities . Experience many of the natural hidden treasures
on and around our island through a variety of vigorous physical activities and
adventures . Students will explore scenic hiking trails and caves, slide down
cascading waterfalls, learn to navigate with a compass, read and follow a map,
and more . Students will also learn water safety skills through fun swimming,
snorkeling, paddling, and diving activities .*

After-School Program GR 1–8CRDG Summer Programs offers an after-school program for students who
are enrolled in our full-day and afternoon classes .
Our after-school program engages students in a variety of fun and educational
activities—outdoor competitions, indoor games, movie days, cooking, science
activities, crafts, and more—all in a safe and supervised environment . Students
should bring their own snacks .

restrictions, as sampling food may be an optional part of this program .
The program has no registration limit .
