Crazy Eights! CVC Game Instructions Two to six players

Object of the game: To use all the cards in your hand and go out first by matching short

vowel words.

1. Copy onto tagboard, cut out and laminate.

2. Shuffle the deck and deal five cards to each player. Have students read their cards to

themselves before the game begins. Decide on the order of play.

3. Place all the remaining cards in a stack facedown in the middle of the table. This stack

will be the draw pile.

4. Turn over the top card and place it face up next to the Draw pile. This will be the Play

pile.

5. The first player reads the card by stating the vowel printed in red and reading the

word, for example, "/a/ as in cat." If Player 1 has a card that matches the short vowel,

Player 1 places it on top of the pile saying, "/a/ as in hat." If the player does not have a

card that matches that spelling pattern, the player draws a new card. If the card picked

is a match, Player 1 can put it down on the play pile; if not, Player 1 keeps the card and

the turn is over.

6. If a player does not have a match but has a Switch It Card, the player can change the

spelling pattern being matched. For example, if the Play pile has hat on top and the

player has fun, dig, big, and bed in hand, a Switch It card could be used to change the

vowel to /i/ as in dig, and dig becomes the new card on top of the Play pile.

7. If the player does not have a match but has a Draw 2 Card, the player can lay that

card, and the next person in play has to draw two cards and lose their turn for that

round.

8. Players take turns matching short vowels and reading the words aloud. If necessary,

shuffle the Play pile, turn it over, and continue playing until one player is out of cards.

9. The first player without any cards left is the winner.

Extensions:

Add extra oral language practice:

1. After playing the game, have students read words and sort according to their short

vowel sound.

2. Have students play another game where they have to find the words that rhyme. This

can also be played like Go Fish.

3. During play, have students say a rhyming word along with the word card that they

lay down.

4. After the game, distribute a sorting grid with 5 columns (one for each vowel) and

have them sort words. Use the cards to do a blind sort. Select a card, read the word on it

and have students write it onto their sorting sheet. They can add additional words in

each column of their own.
