The students at Crawshaw Academy have been very fortunate to have been given the opportunity to participate in the ESH Build My Skills (BMS) programme this year. BMS are providing our Year 10 students with the employability skills required to put them ahead of the competition when the time comes to move on to their post 16 options.

The latest in our series of visiting speakers was Yorkshire Water, accompanied by our local MP Stuart Andrew, who spoke to our students about preparing for interview. Following each session students have had a 'checkpoint' task to complete and return to ESH.

Our students have really engaged with the process this year and we hope to be successful in our application for 2017-18.

LEEDS ART GALLERY VISIT –

WEDNESDAY 3 MAY, WITH 3D ARTIST JIM BOND

Recently we were fortunate enough to have a fantastic visit from the 3D

artist, Jim Bond, in conjunction with a work of art being brought to the

school from the Leeds Art Gallery archive. This was facilitated and

organised by Amanda from the education office at Leeds Art Gallery, who

chose Crawshaw Academy to hold this event, and Rebecca, a curator from

the gallery. All students from Year 8 took part and they should be

congratulated on their behaviour and enthusiasm whilst taking part in the

3D workshops.

Well done Year 8 – a truly creative and inspiring day and a big thank you to

Leeds Art

YEAR 7 DISCO

Oh what a night! Mid May 2017.

The blue carpet was rolled out for our Year 7 V.I.P’s to party.

On Friday , 12th May, as the night settled on Pudsey, the music began, the

DISCO ball started turning and over eighty of our Year 7 students arrived

for the first Year 7 disco!

The disco was arranged by the sixth form students studying level 3 BTEC

business as part of their course!

Mr Fearnley spun the tracks from the front and a fantastic time was had

by all! Next year we are going for a HALLOWEEN PARTY! BE THERE!

Over the last few months, some of our students have been taking part in the Leeds Book Awards. This involves them reading a selection of books for ages 11 – 16, writing a short review, if they wish, and then voting for their favourite book. We have been meeting every Thursday lunchtime since January and on Thursday, 18th May we were able to attend the award ceremony held at Pudsey Civic Hall, where the winning author was presented with a trophy and the esteemed title of ‘Leeds Book Award 2017 Winner’. The event was attended by students from 24 High schools across the city and everyone had a great time meeting and talking with some of the authors and finding out how and where they got their inspiration. The students were a credit to themselves and the school; it was a lovely afternoon. And the winners were:

11 – 14 category -Tamsyn Murray for ‘Instructions for a Secondhand

Heart’.

14 -16 category - L.A.Weatherly – ‘Broken Sky’.

Engineering Awareness Week 3rd - 7th July 2017

Six of our Year 10 students have submitted an application to be part of a programme run by global engineering company Arup. This programme has a structured approach to work experience and aims to inspire and encourage year 10 students to enter a career in engineering.

Engineering Awareness Week (EAW) provides a unique opportunity for students to gain an understanding of the type of projects that are undertaken within a professional engineering consultancy firm, as well as creating awareness of the varied engineering roles available to them.

The closing date for applications is 19th May,. We wish our students good luck in their applications.

Attendance Matters

Meeting our School Attendance Target of 96%

To help us achieve our school attendance target of 96% for all

pupils, we are now insisting on appointment cards / letters being

handed in to school to enable us to authorise absences. This is for

pupils with attendance of less than 97%, but we would encourage

that all appointments be made out of school time where possible

and in most cases we will only be able to authorise a half days

absence except in exceptional circumstances (please get in touch if

you are not sure).

Punctuality

In order to help improve the punctuality of our students, we are

trialling a new way of dealing with students who are late. From

Monday 22nd May, we will be asking all latecomers to complete a 2

sided questionnaire designed to help them consider reasons for

and develop strategies to avoid being late to school. This must then

be handed into Miss Simon by 11 am (end of break). Otherwise an

after school DT will be issued. We are hoping that this restorative

approach will encourage our students to address punctuality issues

in a constructive manner.

We are currently involved in the “Give it 100%” initiative that is funded by the Pudsey

Cluster. Each student that attends school every day between the dates below will receive

bonus points and the chance to win mystery prizes

Attitude to Attendance

We would encourage all parents to continue to use the newly designed “Attitude to

Attendance” graphic when considering what “good attendance” is. This has been designed to

mirror the A2L (Attitude 2 Learning) chart that students will already be familiar with and it is

hoped that students will be able to use the additional information to understand that

excellent and outstanding attendance leads to even better outcomes at school.
