Our Philosophy

Crawley Ridge junior School endeavours to provide a school day which excites, challenges and motivates each individual child. Teachers consider ways of organising children’s learning which promote excellence, perseverance, resilience, self-discipline and independent learning in classrooms. Children are purposefully engaged in a variety of carefully planned activities to meet clear and shared learning intentions, which are aimed at motivating, encouraging and challenging every child. Individuals are valued, mutual respect is evident, teamwork is celebrated and there is a culture of learning for all within a caring environment. Our school believes that each child should have the opportunity to develop their capabilities to the full. We believe that this is achieved by developing and nurturing the whole child and that all aspects of development should be valued and acknowledged by our community. Children, who realise that their individual qualities are valued as much as their academic ability, grow in self-esteem, begin to flourish and have confidence in all areas of school life. We believe that co-operation in our society ensures an atmosphere in which individuals flourish socially, emotionally, intellectually and physically. We aim to enlarge a child’s knowledge, experience and imaginative understanding and thus his/her awareness of moral values and capacity for enjoyment. We hope to enable each child to enter the world after formal education is over as an active participant in society and a responsible contributor to it, capable of achieving as much independence as possible. We place great emphasis on children’s aesthetic, artistic and sporting achievements; on the attitudes and values of trust and support, truthfulness and integrity, unselfishness and personal responsibility. The relationships within the school are founded on respect for one another. Children in our school achieve high academic standards. We therefore aim to enable children to reach their potential by ensuring there are high standards of achievement in all subject areas. They are also valued for themselves and their many achievements, whatever they may be. More than anything we believe that our children enjoy coming to school; it is a happy place! This prospectus can only touch on the richness and quality of the curriculum at Crawley Ridge Junior School. Further information can be had from the Curriculum Policy Statements and Schemes of Work held in the school.

Our School and its Organisation

Our school was built in 1975 in the grounds of a Victorian House which was demolished prior to the school being built. The grounds are particularly beautiful with many rare and interesting shrubs and trees, and these surround the building which, because of the nature of the ground, is split level. Consequently there is a constant awareness of the seasons and the beauty of our surroundings.

The school admits two classes a year to form a year group. There are four year groups. The two classes within a year group work closely together as a team ensuring a common approach, method, content and continuity between year groups. All classes are of mixed ability but children work sometimes as a class, sometimes in sets, particularly for Maths and Literacy, and sometimes as individuals. Children will normally work with their class teacher. However, we have some part-time members of staff who are not class based but work with particular year groups. Every year group has Teaching Assistants who also work closely with the children. This enables flexibility of approach and allows for regrouping of children according to specific needs.

The Curriculum

The junior years of schooling provide the opportunity for a wide based curriculum. They are concerned with acquiring skills and learning attitudes that encourage independent learning as well as content. It is acknowledged that basic skills are best learnt through a wide range of topics using varying approaches and materials; first-hand experience either through the outside world or within classrooms makes the children actively involved and generates a high degree of motivation. Children in years 3, 4, 5 and 6 are working on Key Stage 2 of the National Curriculum. In all year groups, learning experiences are incorporated in a structure of objectives and content planned for each year to encompass History, Geography, RE, Science, Art, Information Technology and Design & Technology in an integrated, thematic approach. In addition all classes experience daily Literacy and Numeracy lessons and links are made from these discrete areas of the curriculum to other subjects. Children experience a modern foreign language throughout the school. Music, PE and Games are timetabled as subject lessons. We believe that active learning and a sense of purpose and success enhance pupils' enjoyment, interest, confidence and sense of personal worth; passive learning and inappropriate teaching styles can lead to frustration and failure. In particular, it is necessary to ensure that the pupils are given sufficient first hand experience accompanied by discussion upon which to base abstract ideas and generalisations. Children from our school will be taken out on educational day visits and as they grow older they will have the opportunity of going on residential field courses. This work is interdisciplinary and often represents the height of their academic achievement. All children make their own books in which they record their learning from the visits. The books they make are of a high quality and the children feel, quite rightly, very proud of their finished work. We know that they go on to treasure their special books especially when they move on to secondary education. These books are unique to Crawley Ridge Junior School. The flexibility of our organisation allows teachers to group children according to ability within their classrooms and across year groups. Our staffing enables both the child with learning difficulties and the more able child to have additional support.

English/Literacy In English we teach pupils to speak and write fluently so that they can communicate their ideas and emotions to others, and to read and listen so that others can communicate with them. We engender a love of reading and give children an opportunity to read a wide range of traditional and modern literature. Children are taught the key skills of spelling as well as grammar and punctuation in line with the National Curriculum 2014. The school uses a fully cursive handwriting style and this is explicitly taught in regular lessons. Children are encouraged to present their work to a variety of audiences in the most appropriate way, including the use of ICT.

Drama Drama encourages speaking and listening skills as well as providing an important vehicle for children to understand and express feelings. It is used across the curriculum and children will experience role play within many subject areas, particularly in English and Personal, Health and Social Education. Children in the Upper School have the opportunity to take part in our Christmas Production.

Library

Our well-stocked, attractive library supports in all areas of the curriculum. We also have a part-time librarian who ensures that the library is well maintained and used regularly by the children and staff for the purposes of carrying out research, or for simply enjoying quiet times to choose and read a variety of books.

Mathematics/Numeracy Mathematics at Crawley Ridge Junior focuses on building an appreciation of the beauty and power of the subject as well as a sense of enjoyment and curiosity. Mathematics is essential to everyday life and links thoroughly with many other subjects. It provides a foundation for understanding of the world. Throughout your child’s time at Crawley Ridge Junior School, they will become fluent with number, place value and the four operations. As they move through the school, they will be taught a range of written methods for each operation. We believe that in having a deep understanding and mastery of number, they will be able to apply their skill to solve problems efficiently. They will develop the skill of mathematical reasoning in order to apply this to problems involving both arithmetic and geometry.

Children will be encouraged to demonstrate their understanding of a method, or systematic solving of the problem, through the use of resources and diagrams alongside formal written methods. When their mastery of place value is embedded, the children will be guided in order to develop their understanding further by examining the connections between multiplication and division with fractions, decimals, percentages and ratio.

Science In science we aim to initiate and sustain attitudes of wonder and enquiry about the world in which we live. The development of scientific knowledge and understanding through work based on the National Curriculum is at the heart of the children’s learning with science investigations completely integrated into the children’s activities. Study is through observation and experiment, with the children forming hypotheses, carrying out investigations, measuring, recording, comparing, looking for patterns and analysing data. A careful balance is maintained between the physical and biological sciences and children are encouraged in practical activities which give opportunity for initiative and original thought.

Our extensive and beautiful school grounds and recently improved environmental pond area serve as a constant source of stimulation and interest. These areas are increasingly important in developing a real appreciation of the complexity of the environment; in understanding the impact humans can have to change or damage it and in realising the importance of the need to take care of it as a precious resource for all our futures. By stimulating and encouraging children’s interest in science we hope they will learn to question and discuss science-based issues with confidence, as well as have a fuller understanding of how major scientific ideas contribute to technological change and so become informed, responsible and caring citizens of the future.

Computing

At Crawley Ridge Junior School, our aim is to create motivated lifelong learners using computing to support and enhance teaching and learning. We aim to provide pupils with the skills that they need to benefit from new technologies whilst knowing how to keep safe online, at school and at home. (Refer to our e-safety policy for more information.) We expect high standards of achievement by all pupils, supported by staff who will be confident and competent in the use of computing. Our school computers are fully integrated into the curriculum. 18 computers are connected to the Internet in our Computing suite. We also have a selection of laptops, projectors, digital cameras and digital video cameras for use around the school. All classrooms have interactive whiteboards and visualisers to facilitate children’s learning.

Computing comprises of three areas:

Computer science

Information communication technology

Digital literacy

Computer science This aspect of the curriculum helps children to develop their programming skills in order to write sequences of instructions to perform a specific outcome. Children also have a go at debugging a selection to ensure the desired results are produced. The program that we currently use to teach computer science is ‘Scratch’ and we are exploring other options too. We also use a variety of ‘unplugged’ methods to help children understand how a computer operates.

Page 13: Crawley Ridge Junior School Prospectus - Eteach Ridge Junior School Prospectus 2014-2015 Graitney Crawley Ridge Camberley Surrey GU15 2AJ ... Mrs Aman Dhaliwal - Year 3 Mrs Lisa Fox

13

Information communication technology This part looks at using search technologies effectively and analysing and presenting data in different forms. Children will find, explore, develop, exchange and present information using a range of Microsoft Office programs.

Digital literacy Finally, digital literacy involves evaluating the way information is presented and an important aspect is to educate children on how to use the internet safely.

The new National Curriculum for Computing Our teaching and learning of the skills, knowledge and understanding in computing will encompass the National Curriculum:

Use search technologies effectively - Using programmes to collect, display, analyse and interrogate information

Select, use and combine a variety of software on a variety of digital resources - using a range of equipment, evaluating the use of different methods and software

Control and simulate - Using the computer to model real and imaginary places and events, Using programs to control devices (e.g. changes in temperature, security sensors)

Exchange and share information - Communicate words, pictures and sounds.

Review, modify and evaluate work as it progresses - Evaluating work.

14

Design Technology

At our school, Technology enables children to observe a process at first hand. Children learn to think and design creatively and have opportunities to be inventive in creating practical solutions to a given problem.

They develop practical skills in areas such as model making; book making; the use of textiles and food technology.

Constant modifications and improvements are often made as the children plan and evaluate their progress in attempting to solve problems and in creating end products. Our kitchen provides exciting opportunities for food preparation which is linked to our Healthy Schools award and our ongoing commitment to developing healthy lifestyles.

15

History and Geography

The study of history plays an important part in helping children to understand how the past influences the present and how beliefs and cultures have influenced people’s actions. Through this they are able to acquire an understanding of themselves as individuals and as members of society. Geography is an important tool of learning and communication, involving study of the physical and human processes that shape places throughout the world and the lives of the people who live in them. Through their learning, children are able to develop an understanding of environmental change and the goal of sustainable development. Skills developed through geography help pupils to make sense of their wider world. In history and geography, children need to be able to research, sift through evidence and put forward a point of view. The school arranges a number of educational visits, both day and residential, where children have the opportunity to study from first hand experience, to find evidence, weigh it up and reach their own conclusions which are then communicated to others in a variety of ways. These are important skills to learn for the future.

16

Physical Education

Physical Education should provide an enjoyable, satisfying and balanced programme, with opportunities for pupils to develop physically, socially, emotionally and cognitively. The Physical Education curriculum at Crawley Ridge Junior School offers a comprehensive range of experiences to meet the needs of individual pupils and the encouragement of active involvement. This is enhanced through the range of before and after school clubs available to the children along with inter-school matches and tournaments. A great emphasis is also placed on school /club links allowing children to experience a range of sport outside the curriculum. The development of confidence, enjoyment, tolerance and the appreciation of strengths and weaknesses of both themselves and their peers are considered to be an important part of the learning process. The use of ICT cameras encourages evaluation and role modelling of the specific skills required. General knowledge and understanding along with positive personal and social attitudes are also encouraged. It is intended that the varied physical activities offered to the children, together with an awareness of the leisure opportunities available within the community, will develop those skills and attitudes conducive to involvement in an active and healthy lifestyle.

Music Music permeates the ethos of our school. All the children who come to Crawley Ridge are offered high level musical opportunities including composition, appreciation of music and performance and production of music. We offer a large number of tuition possibilities and we are a part of the Wider Opportunities music scheme, which encourages every child in year 4 to learn an instrument. As well as a school orchestra, large choir and smaller groups, we ensure that music visits by our school as well as to our school by visiting musicians enrich the musical experiences of every child. We have recently produced our own album and hold an annual outdoor concert. We are always looking for ways to encourage music making to become a relevant part of our children’s life inside and outside school.

Art Children need to develop the ability to observe the world and respond to it expressively and creatively. Children in our school are taught to record through sketching from direct observation; to consider and reflect on the world about them.

During the key stage, children will visit Art galleries to develop their visual literacy. They develop their work into a variety of media including: pastels, watercolour, clay, printing and batik. Their achievements are often outstanding and we value and cherish the opportunities that we are able to give.

Children's work is displayed with care and is acknowledged in our community. It enables children to communicate their learning as well as being a source of inspiration for others. At Crawley Ridge Junior School we are very fortunate to have grounds and gardens that can inspire us and can even become part of our art.

Religious Education

Religious Education is non denominational and is based on the Surrey syllabus. Children are introduced to the teaching about Christianity and its beliefs and customs. During their time in school, they will also learn about other religions, such as Judaism, Islam and Hinduism. Visit to places of worship are commonplace and enable the children to experience aspects of religion from first hand experience.

Exemption from religious education can be arranged if requested in writing.

Collective Worship

A daily act of collective worship is arranged for all the children in the school. It is non-denominational and broadly Christian in character. The daily act comprises assemblies taken by the Headteacher, members of staff, the children, visiting clergy and lay speakers. Our assemblies reflect moral and ethical problems, within the understanding of the children. Parents have the right to withdraw their children from the act of collective worship under the Education Act and this should be requested in writing to the Headteacher.

Modern Foreign Languages

Children have the opportunity to learn French throughout the school. It is an important introduction, which enables pupils to learn about the culture of a country and to develop simple communication and literacy skills, which lay the foundation for future language learning through practical communication. In addition, it assists in pupils being able to express their thoughts and opinions both in English and French and to respond through both speech and in writing. Acquisition of language skills is taught through visual aids, role-play and games which develop in complexity as children progress through the school. Moreover, we liaise with other outside organisations, such as visiting Secondary schools and French Theatre Groups, to ensure that pupils’ language learning is appropriate and relevant to their work at the next stage of their education.

P.S.H.E.C. (Personal, Social, Health, Education & Citizenship)

Through all subjects of the curriculum we help children to deal with difficulties, challenges and fears. Children learn about developing a healthy lifestyle and they are encouraged to share responsibility with others and to take responsibility for their actions. Opportunities are also given for the children to develop relationships and respect differences, to share feelings and to negotiate and reflect. A School Council is held at times throughout the year where child representatives discuss issues and put forward ideas to staff and governors.

The School Council Members of the school council are elected by their classmates. They meet regularly with the School Council Co-ordinator to discuss ways to improve the school and to feedback views and opinions from their respective classes. They take an active part in decision making processes and in supporting the running of the school. The councillors are particularly good at organising themselves by writing agendas, taking minutes and making decisions. Over the years each School Council has been involved in promoting fund-raising for different charities.

Healthy Eating

The school was recently awarded the ‘National Standards for Healthy Schools’ award, which is an achievement we are very proud of. Healthy living/lifestyles is taught through subjects such as Science, P. E. and PSHEC. The children learn that eating healthy food and exercising regularly will enhance their ability to access the curriculum more effectively.

Sex Education Sex education is a natural development in the science study programme of life cycles in the Year 5 summer term. It is not treated as a separate subject to be taught in isolation. In our school planning the structure, behaviour and life history of many different animals and plants are studied within this context; humans are also included. In Year 3 children are introduced to the biology of the human body. In Year 5 changes in the development of boys and girls at puberty are discussed and explained in some detail, as is the subject of human reproduction. This is related to and compared with reproduction in other mammals and plant life cycles. However it is always stressed that there are wider implications to be considered in all human behaviour. Great emphasis is laid on the wonder and mystery of life and the importance of responsible attitudes and loving and caring relationships.

Page 21: Crawley Ridge Junior School Prospectus - Eteach Ridge Junior School Prospectus 2014-2015 Graitney Crawley Ridge Camberley Surrey GU15 2AJ ... Mrs Aman Dhaliwal - Year 3 Mrs Lisa Fox

21

Parents will be offered the opportunity to have more detailed information on the content and resources used before this topic is commenced. The selection of teaching material used is appropriate to the ages of pupils, consideration is always given to meeting the needs of the pupils and staff will exercise their judgement in particular situations and most importantly will consider the nature of the child/children whom they are teaching. The Governors recognise that parents have a statutory right to withdraw their children from these lessons. However they hope that all children will participate. The Headteacher is very happy to discuss this aspect of the curriculum with any parent who may have concerns.

Special Educational Needs Children with special needs (SEN) are welcomed into Crawley Ridge Junior School. The school makes provision for children with learning difficulties, communication problems, emotional and behavioural difficulties and sensory impairment. Successful inclusion is ensured by close liaison with parents and professionals in order to ascertain and meet individual need. The SEN team, which includes teachers and teaching assistants who work solely with the children who have special educational needs, is led by our Inclusions Manager. At Crawley Ridge Junior School we are committed to the early identification of children with special educational needs and effective targeted intervention to support them. The School maintains a list of children with SEN which is regularly reviewed throughout the academic year. Class teachers are given information about SEN children in their class at the beginning of the academic year and liaise with the Inclusions Manager to ensure that appropriate provision is made within classroom activities for each child. Access to the whole curriculum for SEN pupils is ensured through specific differentiation, support groups and additional adult support. The school, in line with Special Educational Needs Code of Practice 2002, adopts a graduated response in order to help children with SEN access a balanced and broadly based curriculum, including the National Curriculum. Parents knowledge, views and experiences are highly valued and parents are involved in all stages. For children who need specific help an Individual Education Plan (IEP) is drawn up with the child, teacher and parent. If the School feels it is necessary to consult with other agencies or professionals, parents are consulted and consent requested before any action is taken. We have staff who solely help children with SEN and these are allocated to year groups depending on the needs. For children who need specific help an Individual Education Plan (IEP) is drawn up with the child, teacher and parent. Copies of the SEN Policy can be found on the school website.

Page 22: Crawley Ridge Junior School Prospectus - Eteach Ridge Junior School Prospectus 2014-2015 Graitney Crawley Ridge Camberley Surrey GU15 2AJ ... Mrs Aman Dhaliwal - Year 3 Mrs Lisa Fox

22

Disabilities

The nature of our site and building poses some difficulty for those with physical disabilities but we are pleased to admit pupils with disabilities and special arrangements can be made. The school has installed disabled toilets and ramps have been created for wheelchair access. We are an inclusive school and as such we ensure disabled pupils are included in all activities, including school visits. Whenever we upgrade aspects of the building we take account of the need for physical and sensory disabilities.

Homework We see homework as a relevant and purposeful activity, and one that provides continuation of the learning taking place at school. The support, encouragement and interest of parents is of vital importance. The amount of homework will vary with the age of the child. A programme of homework activities will be given to parents at the beginning of each academic year. All parents will also receive the copies of the Year Group homework policies in curriculum packs given out at the Curriculum Evening in September.

Jewellery and Watches

Only the wearing of one pair of stud earrings (gold or silver) and a watch is allowed at school and children must remove these for all physical activities, as they constitute a hazard. It is not possible for staff to be responsible for these articles, especially as children forget to collect them after the lesson. We advise that children leave earrings at home on the days when they have physical education. We suggest that if your child must have their ears pierced that it is done at the end of July when there are six weeks holiday for them to heal!

Behaviour

Statement of Policy

We aim to encourage children to show respect for themselves and others by promoting the kinds of behaviours that will help them to become responsible, caring, courteous and tolerant members of the school and of the wider community. Our behaviour policy has been developed with the children and provides the basis for the way we live and work together in the school. The policy is an on-going, interactive policy that is regularly reviewed and updated when necessary through a process of discussion and negotiation. Every child keeps a copy in their file; it is used as and when it is necessary. Parents are invited to share this with their children. Where necessary disciplinary procedures are implemented and always relate to the nature of incidents of bad behaviour; e.g. a child may be asked to make a positive act towards helping our society in cases where anti-social behaviour has arisen. However, in cases of persistent bad and inappropriate behaviour, which includes bullying, parents will be consulted and a contract drawn up to help matters improve. We also have an ‘Anti-bullying Policy’ which is also regularly reviewed; bullying of any sort is simply not tolerated. Often the issue that causes most concern is peer group pressure. This becomes evident in many facets of school life and we need parental support to minimise its effect.

School Rules to be Noted

Children may not climb on, or handle PE equipment in the hall unless a teacher is present.

No child is allowed in the pond area unless accompanied by a member of staff.

Children must walk at all times in the school building and when moving outside the building to lessons in the studios and at the start and end of the day.

Toys and Games To minimise heartbreak, we request that children do not bring to school anything which is precious to them in either monetary or sentimental terms unless they have been especially asked to do so by their teacher.

Pastoral Care We are a small school and are in the position of being able to know all the people in it. Pastoral care is initially with the class teacher, but senior members of staff and the head teacher will always be made aware of pastoral problems, and indeed, every member of our staff feels a responsibility to every child. When a child enters the school from their Infant School, they are paired with an older child who acts as a ‘buddy’ and mentor for them and helps them to get to know the school during their first few weeks.

Staff Consultation During the year opportunities will be given for meetings with the teachers on an appointment basis in order that the parents may discuss their child's progress. Staff hold weekly ‘surgeries’ for parents to share concerns with teachers and to enable progress to be maintained. Once a year the school holds an Open Evening when children's work is displayed. We believe that this gives parents the opportunity to see the school as a continuing educational process and to appreciate the development of work throughout the school. In addition to this we wish to emphasise that parents are welcome to contact the school at any time and request an appointment. It will be made as soon as possible. We are well aware that small matters can rapidly grow into larger ones and that there is nothing gained by delay. Members of staff may approach parents if they feel the need for a parental interview. This could be for a variety of reasons relating to a child's school life, either academic or social. Written reports are given yearly in the summer term.

Our School and Our Parents

Parents are warmly welcomed within the school. Indeed, we would find it difficult to function as we do without them. There are parents who help on visits, hear readers, help on computers, make costumes for school events, act as chauffeurs and generally help in a variety of ways. We very much value and appreciate their support and they are a very important part of our community.

CRB Disclosures and Car Insurance

Parents who would like to help in school must apply for a CRB disclosure. We follow national and local Child Protection Procedures, and if any CRB Checks come back without clearance parents will not be allowed to help in school. In order to apply for a CRB disclosure, parents must contact the school office for an application

form. CRBs are not portable from one organisation to another. For many outside school events, particularly sports events, we appreciate parental help with transporting children to and from such activities. However, we advise parents to check they are covered on their own car insurance for this.

School Fund

There is a school fund and we ask parents to contribute a minimum of £20 per family per year. This is a voluntary donation and we make a request for this in a newsletter early in the Autumn Term. We are concerned not to embarrass or pressurise children over the collection of money which is why a request is made through a newsletter once a year. We are very grateful for contributions from parents but we also accept that some parents may feel strongly about not contributing to the fund. Just to add that contributions to the fund are used to further enhance the education of the children.

Arrangements to Visit the School Prospective parents are welcome to visit the school. Several times are set aside in September and October to enable parents to see the school at work. Please telephone the school for the dates for this year. An evening meeting for all prospective parents is held in the July previous to their child's entry in the September. Parents will have the opportunity to see the school and meet some of the staff. Other parents who may wish to visit the school before their children are admitted are invited to telephone the school for an appointment.

Admission Arrangements

The Admission Policy for the school is that of Surrey County Council LEA. Priority criteria for admission is as follows:

1. Looked After Children

2. Exceptional arrangements

3. Children attending Crawley Ridge Infant School

4. Siblings not admitted under 3. above

5. Any other applicant

If there is oversubscription in any of the above criteria priority will be given on the basis

of nearness to school measured in a straight line from the address point of the pupil’s

house, as set by ordnance survey to the nearest gate for pupils to use. This is calculated

using the Admission and Transport team’s Geographical Information System.

NB: Waiting Lists: For all Community Schools waiting lists will be held for the period of one academic year (September – July), except in subsequent years in the event of more than one request for places to the school and the appropriate year group in full. The waiting lists will be prioritised using the admissions criteria as appropriate to the school(s) concerned. All Surrey schools operate an Equal Preference System. Parents will be given the opportunity to state 3 ranked school preferences.

School Lunches We aim to ensure school meals are nutritionally balanced and very good value for money. The dinners are served in a cafeteria system and this enables there to be both choice and variety in the menu. They are considered very good value at £2.00 per day and provide a balanced and healthy meal. Cheques should be made payable to Surrey County Council. Parents also have the facility to pay on-line at www.surreycc.gov.uk/schoolmeals.

A week’s notice in writing is needed for cancellation of a school meal. Provision is made for children to have packed lunches. Sweets and chocolate should not be brought to school. Please ensure your children are provided with a healthy, balanced packed lunch.

GENERAL INFORMATION

Start of the Day

We are happy for parents to drop off their children from 8.40 in the morning when the school gates open. Children are able to come into school from that time and prepare themselves for the school day which starts at 8.50am. All children should be in their classroom by then, ready for registration.

Illness at School Should a child become ill at school we attempt to contact the parents immediately. We do have a welfare teaching assistant who is well aware of individual problems and personalities. She is also a qualified First Aider. However, we have no room with facilities in which we can care for a sick child and parents will be telephoned immediately and requested to collect their child.

Medicines

Only prescribed medicines can be given to children. Parents are required to seek agreement from the member of staff responsible and are requested to complete a form giving us permission to administer the medicine.

Withdrawal During School Hours If your child has to be withdrawn from school for medical, dental or any other purpose, please send a note giving details and the time of meeting. Children must report to the office as they leave and when they return. We cannot let a child leave the school premises without written confirmation, in case there were some misunderstanding. We expect parents to collect children from the office in these circumstances.

Transport

For safety's sake, cars may not drive into school to deliver or pick up the children. Crawley Ridge becomes very congested at school opening and closing times and parents/carers are asked to park carefully and considerately when collecting or depositing their children.

Broadmoor Warning System In the event of any escape from Broadmoor, the siren will sound. Schools are notified by telephone at once. Until the 'all clear' goes, all children may only be sent home with an adult. Groups of neighbours should be prepared to help other children home. The children will be kept in school until an adult arrives to collect them. Names of friends or neighbours allowed to take children home in an emergency are requested in the emergency form, which is completed on admission. A telephone pyramid system and ParentMail texting operates for emergencies, which might necessitate closure of the school.

Clubs A list of current clubs and activities outside school hours is available from the school office. They are many and varied. However, whilst this will give the reader an awareness of what is happening in our school at the present, we cannot guarantee that there will be the same activities available next year. Our clubs reflect the interests and enthusiasms of our staff and pupils and may vary from year to year. These activities take place during the lunch hour, before and after school. Before a child is allowed to join a club activity, we ask parents to sign a form of permission to ensure that they are aware of the time a child will be leaving school.

In order to offer a range of activities we buy in expertise to supplement what our staff can offer. For these activities there may be a small charge levied. Some of the clubs that have taken place in the last year were as follows; Cross-country Basketball Judo Rugby Athletics Hockey Environmental Street Dance Rounders Drama Orchestra French Choir Netball Art & Craft Recorders

Instrumental Tuition Saxophone, clarinet and guitar lessons are available at the school. These are taken by peripatetic music teachers employed by the authority. Children are selected by aptitude and motivation. Flute and piano lessons can be arranged on a private basis. These are small group lessons of not more than six children.

There is a charge for all instrumental tuition.

Complaints Procedure Schools are required by the Education Reform Act to make parents aware of the leaflet “Responding to Parents’ Concerns”. The Governors have accepted the Local Education Authority's arrangements and the document is available in the school. The document stresses that most complaints can be best settled locally in informal discussions with the Headteacher and/or other members of staff in the school. We do agree with this wholeheartedly and would also stress statements already made in the prospectus; i.e. that it is important to contact us as soon as you have any concern, no matter what it might be. If parents are worried or anxious about the school then children sense the anxieties and do not progress as they should and matters get worse. Sometimes children themselves would prefer parents not to bring matters to the School's attention. Please assure your child that we do understand and cannot make things right unless we know the problem.

Safeguarding Children

Crawley Ridge Junior School has a safeguarding children policy to meet Department of Health and the Department for Children, Schools and Families requirements. This is regularly reviewed by staff and governors. Principles:

Children have a right to be safe.

Parents have the right to be informed.

Children are best protected when parents and school can work together. All staff are trained in Child Protection procedures and the Child Protection Liaison Officer is the Headteacher. A copy of the policy is available in the office.

Charging for School Activities

Educational visits and school activities which take place within the school or off the school premises which require funding during the day. It is the intention of the Governing Body to adopt the policy of the LEA in its statement of charging for school activities. In order that these activities can take place it is the policy of the Governing Body to ask for voluntary contributions from the parents of the children involved in order to cover the costs. A copy of the Charging and Remissions Policy is available on the school website.

Page 29: Crawley Ridge Junior School Prospectus - Eteach Ridge Junior School Prospectus 2014-2015 Graitney Crawley Ridge Camberley Surrey GU15 2AJ ... Mrs Aman Dhaliwal - Year 3 Mrs Lisa Fox

29

Residential Visits

It is the policy of the Governing Body to charge for board and lodging as stated under the 1988 Act, and to ask for voluntary contributions from the parents of the children involved to cover other costs. There will be a complete remission of board and lodging charges for all pupils whose families are on income support or family credit.

The Governors wish to make it clear that there is no obligation to contribute and that no pupil would be omitted from the activity because his or her parents were unwilling to contribute. However, should parents exercise their right not to contribute then their action could mean the planned activity could not take place. In the unlikely event of a number of parents exercising their right not to contribute, with a consequent shortfall in funds, all the parents would be consulted to consider whether other means of raising money could be agreed so that the planned activity could take place.

School Attendance and Holiday Leave

From 1st August 1991 all schools have had to distinguish in their registers between pupil's authorised and unauthorised absences. ‘Authorised’ absence, covers the following : i) absence due to sickness: ii) absence on a day set apart exclusively for religious observance by the religious body to

which a pupil's parents belong; iii) absence on work experience or to take part in an approved public performance.

Attendance for Surrey Heath Consortium of Schools – “By Law, all children of compulsory school age must be in full time education, and schools attach great importance to children attending regularly and punctually. All children can have an illness at one time or another that can prevent them from attending, but parents do not have a right to take children out of school for holidays or similar events. To this end Surrey Heath primary and secondary schools will promote good attendance and only in exceptional circumstances will Headteachers grant leave of absence for holidays or similar time requested by parents/carers. We are all dedicated to working in partnership with parents, but need parental support to ensure statutory guidelines and expectations are met.”

Leave for holidays during term-time in exceptional circumstances requires parents to complete

a form, available from the school office, to request leave of absence. We would stress that it

is not parents’ right to take a holiday in term-time. Term and holiday dates are issued a year in advance to enable parents to make arrangements for holidays during the school holidays.

Uniform Our uniform is unusual and distinctive. All items can be purchased from Brenda’s of Camberley (telephone 01276 469697 or www.brendasschoolwear.com).

Please ensure that clothing is marked clearly with your child's name. Identical articles of clothing are hard to identify. It is extremely time consuming searching for named articles and very frustrating when there is no labelling. Time spent searching for lost clothes is time spent not teaching. School uniform is a unifying factor and also an equaliser in a school. We ask you to keep strictly to the agreed uniform. Children wear shoes in school and not trainers which are quite inappropriate with school uniform except for lunchtime play. We ask that a pair of average priced black and white trainers are brought to school for playtime which cannot be construed in anyway to be desirable/designer/outstanding. Footwear is the most difficult aspect of uniform to maintain because fashion dictates certain styles which become overwhelmingly important to children as 'image promoters'. This causes envy amongst children and unfortunate circumstances can develop. I feel sure that parents will understand and help the school to maintain traditional values. Children with medium to long hair (shoulder length) should keep their hair tied back and off their faces during the school day using hair ties in school colours i.e. green or brown. Short hair must be shaved no lower than a Grade 3 cut and have no patterns added.
