Launch Party & Arts and Crafts Exhibition at Creative Escape Being the first craft magazine to be launched in Singapore, Craftholic could not possibly have just an ordinary launch. Instead, the magazine’s team decided that what better way to kick start the first issue than at a creative exhibition cum workshop at Creative Escape. The launch took place on the 6th of March, 2008. Indeed, the exhibition was brimming with talents from all fields of arts and craft. It was an experience to meet these women of all ages who are so passionate about their craft and excel tremendously in their field. They each have their distinct style. There were artists, painters, photographers, graphic designers, jewelry designers,

silver clay instructor, mosaic workshops, knitting and quilting, cake bakery, stained glass amongst other crafts available.

Craftholic kept true to its name, since the day was all about craft, craft and more craft! There is so much talent here in Singapore to discover; the exhibition is proof. What caught my eye personally was the painted glassware made by Arden, the owner of Creative Escape. Many customers went up to her to ask her if they could buy some of it, but as Arden says, the fun lies in making it! In fact, some of us were lucky enough to drink from painted wine glasses, which, believe it or not, made the drink so much more enjoyable!

Crafters should not miss out on their paper cut out flowers, which can be found in an exciting assortment of colors and variety. These are usually glued onto scrapbooks, but they can also be sewn or stitched onto other materials. To achieve a more pop-up effect on your scrapbook or cards, look for the clipboard patterns made of plain cardboard. They come in different shapes and are thicker, which creates excellent 3D effect.

Their cardstock pieces (30 cm x 30 cm) range from $1.25 to $5.75.

hobby craFt

Ever seen deceptively simple tracing paper transformed into intricate patterns of lace and floral motifs? Hobby Craft offers lessons on Parchment Craft: how to turn tracing paper, which is slightly thicker than normal ones into elaborate decorative patterns worth framing on your wall. Using a variety of techniques such as embossing, perforating and stippling, any pattern you can think of can be scratched onto paper and achieve an immediate pop-up effect. Fill in the colors with dry pencils, watercolor, acrylic paint or even ink and you get an amazingly detailed craftwork. You can also make different lace patterns out of paper by tracing ready patterns out of design books.

Ms. Kanny, who runs a small studio along Alexandra Road is a professional crafter, awards teaching certificates to students who complete a required course.

As I stepped into the shop, I was immediately intrigued by the masterpieces on display. Loretta Hui-shan Yang, the modern Chinese glass artist behind those masterpieces, is a renowned Taiwanese performing artist. She has implicated the grace and beauty of her performances and has incorporated it into her two decades of glass making.

Liu Li Gong Fang first opened in Paragon in 2000. It was then followed by another outlet in Takashimaya, operating both as a gallery and a shop for audience who want decorations, jewellery and ornaments.

The contemporary glass studio is acclaimed for its distinguished artistic masterpieces. The artworks, which are of high standards of craftsmanship, are strongly influenced by Chinese culture and mythology. The main customers are Chinese locals and tourists who want a piece of oriental craft.

The outcome of the masterpieces is shown in the racks and shelves of Liu Li Gong Fang. Loretta Yang is truly a master of this art form. Although it looks tedious, she makes it seem as though it was child’s play. Her works are sold to collectors all over the world including United Kingdom and Japan.

Liu Li Gong Fang was founded in 1987 in Taiwan. It now has galleries in Taiwan, China and Singapore. For more information you can visit their galleries at Paragon and Takashimaya. You can approach their friendly staff for a more in-depth look on glass making.

Yep, I am talking about the most special day of our life: our wedding. As kids, we have

imagined it to be divine, with exquisite table settings and that oh- so- perfect invitation card.

And of course, with a wonderful person by our side!

Well, Craft Inc. specializes in making our dreams come true (no, they are not a match- making service!) Jean and her team excel in conceptualizing and designing hand crafted items such as wedding cards, table settings, Angpow boxes, Wedding favors, and

ring pillows amongst others. She absolutely loves her job, and her creativity enables her to work by her clients’ guidelines and preferences and

deliver spectacular results. Her clients come from all over the world, from Indonesia to Italy to Japan, and her designs suit each culture and traditions. Of course, before embarking on any project, Jean does extensive

research on these details.

Usually, customers come about three to six months before the big day in order to conceptualize and finalize all the details

and get their arrangements ready. Since most of them already have the venue in hand, the

bride and groom then have to choose the theme. According to this theme, Jean and her team let their creative juices flow and come up with ideas for the different material needed. Of course, her services vary from customer to customer. Some want her to do everything, from designing the concept to implementing it. Others ask her for help in designing their theme, and set about to doing the rest themselves.

all of us have dreamt of that perfect day, where all eyes will be on us, and people all around will be smiling, laughing, clicking pictures,

having good food, checking out the décor, and oohing and aahing over every small detail.

They can get various knick- knacks and material at Craft Inc to do so.

The designer intends on building long term relationships with her clients, which is not surprising since she is such a bubbly and interesting person! Often, she designs their wedding arrangements, and after few years they will approach her to plan their baby’s announcement, birthdays or even anniversary celebrations.

When talking to Jean, one can deduce the passion she has for what she does. According to her, weddings are simpler nowadays. They involve a fusion between traditionalism and modernism. The trend now is to have classy and simple weddings, which follow a certain theme and tell a story of their own. The in- theme today is the garden one.

Despite starting off as a small craft shop at Forum Shopping Mall, Craft Inc has today evolved to a beautiful and unique conceptual store. Truly worth a visit for all those planning an event and in need of different and fresh ideas!

Sounds interesting? Well, anyone can

learn how to scrapbook with Scrapoholics!

Spending two hours with Eunice and learning

how to scrapbook was indeed rewarding and

very informative. There is so much to learn

about scrapbooking- my misconception that it was

only about buying some stickers, alphabets, pretty

papers and pasting the pictures in any haphazard

way quickly faded away within the first few minutes of the workshop!

We first started the lesson with a theoretical background of the different materials

available, and their uses. Eunice made the class even more interesting by showing us her

holiday album and giving us examples of the different ways to use scrapbooking material.

With so much available out there, you need to first plan your work by deciding which

pictures to use, what papers are most suitable, and then how to embellish with which

accessories: brads and snaps, eyelets, journaling tags, cut-outs, drawings, stickers, cards

are just some of the few decorations which can be utilized. The talented scrapbooker also

has an online store where she sells all types of scrapbooking material, and offers a diverse

range of brands. This gives her a slight edge since she constantly keeps up- to- date with

the latest trends and the most efficient tools in the world of scrapbooking.

Equipped with the tips, information and different layout possibilities, we then chose

a cardstock (a hard paper to be used as a base), a decorative paper, and the pictures we

would use for the title and content page. We were then ready to make our very own first

scrapbook baby!Scrapbooking is all about letting your creative juices flow! There is such a wide array

of scrapbooking material available that one can easily get lost in the selection. The

workshop enabled us to discern the scrapbook products available and its uses while

giving us direction as to how to combine creativity with practicality in order to scrapbook

effectively and efficiently. If you too are in awe at all the scrapbooking material out there and have absolutely

no clue as to what to do with it, Eunice’s workshop will certainly answer all

your queries and equip you with so many tips and information that you will

get absolutely hooked on scrapbooking! And the best part? As Eunice says,

‘anyone can scrapbook! You don’t need any skills, just a love for craft!’

Are you one of those people who absolutely love

clicking pictures, and have to bring your camera

with you everywhere, be it at a party, the mall,

or even at work? You probably must be having

a millions of these picture moments on your

computer, Facebook or your blog! And not

surprisingly, when you go through your iPhoto a

few months later and look at all those old pictures,

you often go: Oh, I don’t remember clicking

this one!

A photograph is a memory which enables us to engrave past moments in our

minds and make them last forever. Each photograph tells a different story and

has a special significance. However, the irony is that most of us tend to forget

many seemingly small and insignificant moments which in fact hold greater

meaning! That is exactly why Eunice Choy and her partner Li Shihao decided

that the only way to capture the same mood and atmosphere of photographic

moments is through scrapbooking! It is o

nly after her honeymoon in

Europe that Eunice started scrapbooking. Her ‘imagination was fired’ by

scrapbooking images she saw in a magazine, and being the very creative

and craftholic person that she is, she immediately jumped the bandwagon!

Why scrapbooking you may ask? Well darlin’, if you thought that

printing your photographs and having physical albums is passé, think

again! Scrapbooking has taken the Singapore craft industry by a

storm in the past few years- it is essentially like a journal, where one

preserves pictures in a creative, unique and attractive manner, putting

in captions, tags or even paragraphs to describe the photographic

moment and to set the mood. It is an über- chic manner in which

such moments can be preserved to last forever and ever!

Recycling jewellery? This may see a strange thing to do. Who, you may ask, would want to wear recycled jewellery? The answer is, if it is done well, using good materials and

innovative designs, EVERYONE! Put your hands up those of you who have collections of single

earrings, necklaces with broken clasps or links, gifts of hideous gee-gaws that you would not be see dead in. I expect if you are like me, you have several little tins and boxes mouldering away in the bottom of your wardrobe, labelled “I will do something about these when I have time”. And that was probably x number of years ago.

It is a pity as we are sitting on a potential treasure trove of gifts, saleable jewelry and items that we could redesign and wear, instead of spending more money in shops. The “Green” movement is not only about using eco-friendly materials, but also about recycling items instead of consigning them to the dustbin.

I have been making jewelry for friends, for sale and for myself for several years now. What started me off on this hobby was a pile of single earrings that I could not bear to throw away and was such an eyesore.

You will be surprised at how little effort it takes to turn what you considered a worthless item into a work of art. Those of us who have mastered techniques like wirework, weaving, stringing, wrapping and chain maille have all the know-how. Received a cloisonné brooch from an aunt at Christmas that screams “old –fashioned”? No problem. Just get out your tools, eye-pins, matching beads and chain and turn the brooch into a chic pendant and chain. Even if you decide that you do not want to wear it, it would still make a great gift or you could sell it (but not to the same aunt!!!).

Similarly for single earrings. Turn these into lockets,

wire them onto rings make them

into brooches or hair ornaments and voila, you have

conversation pieces.

Learning jewelry making is a continuous process, a journey where

one’s skills and creativity increase over time. As I learn new techniques and improve

my skills, I often revisit earlier creations and redesign them. So what was a simple string of

beads could become something so much more sophisticated using wirework. You will find your

creativity blossoming as you experiment with new techniques and materials.

I would urge all fledgling jewelry designers and keen hobbyists to hone your

skills and develop unique pieces from jewelry that you never wear. Don’t let these lie in boxes as they represent waste. Even worse, do not throw these items away. Produce enough interesting pieces you may find friends and acquaintances beating a path to your door with items that they want you to REDESIGN, REMAKE, RECYCLE.

After a hiatus for about 2 months after moving out from Emerald Hill Road, Maki Squarepatch: hello eco! is humbled to find a new dwelling nestled on the 2nd storey of a quaint shophouse at 33 Bali Lane.

Xin (resident artist/designer) and I dream of a place of where creativity runs free, where people with the quirkiest taste will appreciate cool, out of the world creations by designers and artists from around the world. People have said that we adopt a style that is childlike but our take is that there is a part of us that will always be a child no matter whether we’re 7 or 77. Whoever says that one needs to accessorize or dress older just because he/she is anyway? The shop also serves as a modular gallery where art works are displayed and appreciated. For May – June, the shop carries paintings and illustrations by artist Sia Joo Hiang.

The pride of the shop is not only the nutty Maki Squarepatch creations that the shop houses but also the varied creations by other equally radical artists and designers like Lulie, Amy Woo, Jueru, Pencils and Needless, Deborah McKellar, For The Record and more. Maki Squarepatch: hello eco! carries not only unique, one of a kind handmade

goodies, with a soft spot for those which are eco-friendly especially but also a neat selection of vintage apparel and now new little girls’ dresses designed by Charlotte.

Maki Squarepatch: hello eco! had its opening party on 9 May and friends and customers alike had major fun! The opening party’s exhibition is the Mutants collection, a Maki Squarepatch collaboration with Kelvin Tan, musician, composer, doodler and very multi-talented individual (check his works at www.dialecticrealm.com). We’re honored and delighted to house everybody! Xin ordered a special cake for the occasion and everybody had fun picking out which body part they wanted.

Find handmade delights to your hearts content at Maki Squarepatch: hello eco! where everything from clothing, accessories and household/lifestyle stuff can be found. See you there!

Maki Squarepatch: hello eco! opens Tue – Sat 1.00 – 8.00pm, Sun 2.00 – 7.00pm. We’re closed on Mondays and Public Holidays. Tel: 6292 2248.

Meet the youngest crafter that Craftholic has ever featured - Kelvin Atmadibrata is twenty years old, has just finished his A Levels, and is extremely talented! An Indonesian by birth, Kelvin has spent most of his educative years in Singapore. His interest in origami started when he was a child, when his maid showed him how to fold water bombs. Being taught how to

fold papers in school had never caught his attention like that specific design. He was fascinated by the action of blowing air into the deflated paper to create the puffed water bomb.

What is origami you may ask? It is the art of folding paper into different shapes and designs. Interestingly, origami in today’s perception is very traditional. It has to be from a piece of square paper that is uncut or unglued. However, as old as the Edo regime, origami practitioners have been using different shapes of papers like stars and pentagons, and the technique of cutting and applying adhesive medium has also been practiced. Because of this freedom in origami, many flowers designs were invented since many of the bases of floral origami are not square.

According to Kelvin, origami encompasses both the worlds of arts

and craft: “When I fold a flower, I am making a craft. However, when I fold

100 flowers and arrange them in a certain way, I am making art.”

CRAFTER OF THE MONTH

TEXT Karishma PHOTO Nanao

“Origami as an art can also be explored in many other ways, for example when the final design of origami is able to evoke certain feelings or convey certain messages to the viewers. That particular design, which is initially a craft, has turned into an art. I consider myself as both a crafter and an artist. I make art through craft.”

His big break came in form of his A Level art coursework. Depressed and confused, Kelvin had no clue about what to do for his finals. Origami –surprisingly- did not even enter his mind. It is only when he went to a few bookstores and browsed through some books on origami that he thought of combining his two favorite subjects: origami and flowers. His art work was done over a period of 8 months, where he spent an insane amount of time researching. He made use of different colored flowers to form an eagle- eyed view of the map of Indonesia. You can just imagine how spectacular it was!

15

Kelvin Atmadibrata

Flowers have always been a fascination for him; in fact, he is now doing an art of floral design course in order to combine the two separate ideas which he loves: flower arrangement and origami. In a few months, he will be taking up a photography course at Nanyang Technological University which will enable him to combine his various talents and make a career out of it. This young and extremely gifted man sees himself as an origami artist who specializes in flowers in the next 5 years. His course in photography will enable him to further enhance and exploit his work.

He is currently working on his new installation piece. It will involve, surprise surprise, floral arrangement and origami. It is a tough and tedious job, since there are many stages involved in the art of origami. Choosing the type of flowers to suit the theme, deciding in which way to arrange them, selecting the different kind of papers to add the effects etc all form part of the talented origamist’s research.

Many origami artists have invented their designs through studies, but many, like Kelvin, have found them through trials and errors. So far he has created his 3 own designs of flowers: mushrooms, jasmine and spider lily. This motivates him to fold more and more designs to find innovative and novel ways to fold flowers. He sometimes also moves away from the traditional and has combined the technique of jewelry through the use of beads with origami.

Kelvin is also part of the Singapore Origami Club. They meet up once a month, and exchange information on new techniques, books and types of papers. Currently, there are about 20 people in the club.

Craftholic supports this origami artist, Kelvin. If you have any enquiries or interested in exhibiting his art, please contact Kelvin at [email protected] or check out his A Level art work at www.xanga.com/kelvingarinkz.

PAPETERIEDear Crafters,

“The men of experiment are like the ant; they only collect and use. But the bee… gathers its materials from the flowers of the garden and of the field, but transforms and digests it by a power of its own.” – Leonardo Da Vinci

What are the first few things that come to your mind when we talk about paper-craft? I’m almost certain I can read your mind: “Origami, scrap-booking, card-making!” Well, 2 local crafting bees sure have transformed & digested paper by power of their own. In his efforts in recycling and up cycling, Moses (owner of Pauseability) magically gives old paper and cardboard new lives in these lovely journals. Each attempt is an exploration of form and themes, and even some combination with other types of craft. So far, every journal is one of its kind, and with a little story of its own too. Moses hopes that this will encourage their owners to take their pauses and add on their creativity. To see full range of Moses’ creations, please visit: http://www.pauseability.com.sg , http://www.pauseability.etsy.com Sandra, crafter behind Unique Accessories, is extremely skilful in creating miniatures. With her patience & intricate techniques in paper quilling, she has successfully transformed ordinary paper into beautiful, everlasting jewelries. Each pair of earrings is exquisitely designed and skillfully handcrafted with thin strips of colored paper which used for paper quilling. These vibrant earrings look extremely good against most shades of hair. It is really amazing that these colorful & sturdy beads are actually made from paper! You have to see it to believe it! http://blog.topsites.sg/unique/ Both Sandra and Moses have added new meanings to paper-craft with their creative minds and hands. They have proven themselves to be the powerful bees in our crafting garden. So Crafters, are you the ant or the bee?

Yours sincerely, Betsy ^_^ [email protected]

“I am a Singaporean blessed with the

support from family & friends to be able

talented crafters who are living their dreams

Often referred to as ‘a pampering retail space dedicated to customers’, Laine’s Papeterie is all that and more. The scrapbook store offers an intimate and inspiring creative experience to customers. It is essentially a boutique for paper crafting where a very extensive and comprehensive range of paper crafting products coupled with personal services of product demonstration and one-to-one consultations is available. What makes this scrapbooking store stand out from the others is the fact that it is a very personalized and customized space. One can spend hours merely browsing through the very large paraphernalia for scrapbooking, and feel totally at home!

Elaine first started off her little shop at Wheelock a few years ago, when she realized that there was a serious dearth in the market for paper crafting material. She found herself

constantly shopping and stocking up on scrapbooking materials during her many trips to the USA, and was extremely inspired by the booming paper craft industry there. Eventually, she recognized the opportunity for scrapbooking in Singapore and thus Laine’s Papeterie was born!

Since scrapbooking is the ‘in thing’ now, more and more people are seeking to learn about this craft and hobby. And they can do so at Laine’s Papetrie. Their Scrapbook Design University™ is the 1st of its kind in Asia and in Singapore offering the widest curriculum of courses and programs in paper crafting and even digital scrapbooking. In fact, the Singapore University is second in the world for conferring the most number of Scrapbook Design & U™ program graduates.

Different types of courses are available at the university, where you can graduate with a certificate from USA by EK success, which is the largest scrapbooking company in the USA. Graduates participate in programs which educate them about the scrapbooking theories and principles of design. Apart from the University certification, enthusiasts

can also join different themed classes in scrapbooking layouts, altered art and paper crafting. These classes are designed to allow students to discover their own individualistic creative style and preferences, and acquire new techniques.

The staff at Laine’s Papeterie is very up- to- date with the happenings in the scrapbooking world. According to Elaine, the latest trends in scrapbooking include felt, acrylic, and transparency overlay materials that add new dimension to the craft. Clear stamps and rubber stamps are being incorporated largely in the craft today.

Truly, Laine’s Papeterie offers it all: scrapbook paraphernalia, university level courses, specialized courses, and a vast sea of knowledge about paper crafts and the changing trends! What are you waiting for to check them out at their store at #03-12 Wheelock Place or visit their website www.laines.com.sg!

mEI* #02: Paper ChaseThe digital explosion was supposed to herald going paperless. But really, that seems to have barely happened. The touch, sight, sound and even smell of paper is still very much around us.

Paper remains a versatile, durable and even romantic material. In our younger days, we must have folded planes, boats and paper balls. Such paper folding is a deceptively simple art that can still generate so many fascinating variations for us to explore.

Rolling paper makes them sturdy and could be made into pieces of furniture or tablemats. Triangular strips of colorful magazine pages have also been rolled into beads

to form curtains. Seen those? Such beads could possibly make exquisite jewelry too.

Not forgetting that paper also makes books. Gather those scraps of paper around you and turn them into notebooks. Add glue to form the spine or stitch them together with thread. Old books from a dusty corner of your bookshelf or in a secondhand bookstore could throw up useable book covers, illustrations and cool text to become a part of that OOAK (one-of-a-kind) journal.

Fold them, stick them, or write, draw and paint on them - with a touch of inspiration, we can create useful and beautiful things from all sorts of paper. This also leaves us no excuse for not becoming more eco friendly with paper.
