COVID -19 Daily Updates

Asia and the Pacific

1 July 2020

FROM COUNTRY LEVEL OFFICES

Indonesia: Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises (MSME) that account 62% of the GDP and employ 97%

of the total workforce of the country would receive IDR 123 trillion from the state administration in the form

of interest subsidies, placement of funds for restructuring, lending service expenditures, guarantees for

working capital, tax incentives, and investment financing as part of the COVID-19 recovery assistance.

However, only about 190,000 MSMEs (8.3%) out of the total 2.3 million were able to receive incentives,

mounting pressure on the government to come up with a plan to reach a wider number of beneficiaries. As

of 1 July, there were 56,385 confirmed cases with 2,876 deaths and 24,806 recoveries in Indonesia.

Iran: WFP handed over to the Iranian Red Crescent Society its last PPE consignment, which included over

359,000 three-layer masks and 739,000 N95 masks. These items will be used by health workers.

2,457 new cases and 147 deaths were reported on 30 June, bringing the total cases to 227,662 and death

toll to 10,817.

Minister of Health and Medical Education, Saeed Namaki, has said that Iran has taken effective steps

towards manufacturing a coronavirus vaccine. Animal tests of the COVID-19 vaccine were successful and

human trial will start soon.

Japan: The Tokyo Metropolitan Government revised its COVID-19 monitoring framework on 30 June,

removing numerical thresholds for judging whether a business closure request should be reintroduced. In

the previous framework, a threshold was identified for the number of new infections and the proportion of

untraceable infection cases which would trigger a business closure request. In the new setup, the

government will refer the expert analysis once a week to consider whether to renew requests, such as for

voluntary restrictions on going out.

117 new cases were reported on 30 June. Total cases at 18,593, while the death toll stands at 972.

Medical startup Anges Inc. has begun Japan’s first clinical tests on humans of a potential vaccine for COVID

19 at an Osaka hospital. The test will run through 31 July next year.

Myanmar: The security situation in the northern areas of Rakhine State remains volatile, with ongoing

fighting and an increased presence of security forces in the area of Kyauk Tan in Rathedaung Township.

Initial reports estimated that some 1,500 people have been newly displaced across downtown Rathedaung,

with a further 1,300 displaced in Buthidaung, Ponnagyun and Sittwe townships. It is important to note that

Rathedaung has hosted some 14,575 internally displaced people prior to the current escalation.

Humanitarian partners are working to assess the scale and severity of impact on civilians. Some assistance

has been provided to displaced people, but access to assess and respond to the needs remains a

challenge, particularly in rural areas.

The government has lifted stay-at-home orders in all designated townships.

Philippines: The number of new cases reported from Cebu city remains above the national average with

a positivity rate of about 33 in every 100 persons whereas the national average is seven positive cases per

100.

The President has ordered an extended lockdown in Cebu City until 15 July, while Metro Manila and the

rest of the country are still under a general community quarantine.
