Editor’s NoteThe third issue of LAVA features a mega-coverage on one of the world’s biggest sporting events – The World Cup 2014, which will take place from 12 June to 13 July. LAVA magazine takes a fairly in-depth look at a selected number of stadiums in Brazil that will be hosting World Cup matches, such as the Maracana Stadium in Rio de Janeiro, the Arena Fonte Nova in Salvador and the Sao Paolo arena. It’s interesting to learn how various innovative lighting and audio-visual solutions have been incorporated into these venues to provide the best football viewing experience for the hundreds of thousands of attendees, as well as the millions of people who will be watching these matches from around the world.

This issue also has features on lighting and audio-visual solutions in other stadiums or sports venues around Asia, including an interesting case study on a sports complex in Malaysia.

Of course, LAVA Volume 3 also includes various projects outside of the sporting realm, including several different projection mapping showcases and a series of light art installations in Singapore.

Lastly, be sure to read about our recent trip to ACME’s factory in Foshan City, China. It’s an impressive facility that boasts advanced technologies and machinery, and a spiffy showroom to boot.

Enjoy reading!

Best regards,

Nur Shakylla Nadhra (Editor)

Crestron Asia: A One-Stop Integrated

Solutions Provider Since i ts establ ishment in Hong Kong in 1995, Crestron Asia has come a long way and is now the wor ld’s leading manufacturer of advanced control and automat ion solut ions, integrat ing al l systems and devices onto a s ingle open plat form so they can communicate and work together seamlessly.

“We want to provide one-stop integrated solut ions to our c l ients. This is a way to bui ld customer loyal ty. I f we can provide them with every solut ion that they require, why would they need to look anywhere e lse?” said V incent Lum, Business Manager (Singapore) of Crestron Asia.

LAVA magazine recent ly v is i ted Vincent at the company’s Singapore off ice, which serves as a representat ive off ice where employees provide local support serv ices. “One of the reasons we’ve set up an off ice here is that, as the business cont inues to grow, we wi l l need support. Sel l ing is one th ing, but after-sales serv ice is another.”

At the same t ime, the sett ing up of an off ice in Singapore sends a posit ive message to i ts local c l ients. “We want to show them that we are not a ‘one-off ’ company. We are here to stay.”

Playing to its StrengthsTo excel in a chal lenging industry would mean having to opt imise ones resources, and Crestron Asia is more than wi l l ing to play to i ts strengths. The company is placed in an ideal posit ion, as i t provides solut ions for both l ight ing and audio-v isual industr ies – thus not only serv ing the vert ical but a lso the hor izontal market segment. V incent expla ined: “Since we’re not focused on just one aspect of the market, we do have an advantage.”

The dist inct qual i t ies that V incent descr ibes as “seamlessness and scalabi l i ty” a lso point back to Crestron Asia’s commitment to establ ish long-standing re lat ionships with i ts c l ients. “We can custom-make our products that wi l l meet the c l ient’s needs r ight now as wel l as the future. We th ink long-term and wish to cul t ivate a recurr ing business.”

Direct penetrat ion is a lso a key factor, V incent noted. Crestron Asia makes sure to meet with i ts potent ia l c l ients face-to-face in order to address their needs and customise i ts products to cater to them.

Product Development and R&DIn an ongoing effort to bui ld i ts port fo l io, Crestron Asia is working towards developing i ts own “gears” ( i .e. the interfaces between l ight ing and audio systems), such as transformers and bal lasts, to dovetai l i ts goal

of providing a complete sweep of integrated solut ions with minimal errors. “ I f we can bui ld an ent i re chain of products in one product ion l ine and test i t without depending on th i rd part ies, we can become very sel f- suff ic ient,” V incent added.

Software-wise, the company is s lowly moving into enterpr ises – meaning assets-management, such as integrat ing one’s te lev is ion, l ights and other e lectronics seamlessly. “This means that we wi l l provide uni f ied solut ions wherever you go. From the moment you press the button of a door to a bui ld ing unt i l you exi t the back door, i t would be ent i re ly f rom us.”

Crestron’s big ideas are backed by i ts sol id team of more than 300 R&D engineers at i ts US-based lab.

Looking AheadAs a reputable brand with big dreams and a desire to compete with only the best in the industry, Crestron Asia is looking to expand i ts scope by incorporat ing the concept of “bui ld ing by design”.

“This means providing a fu l l cata logue of solut ions catered to an ent i re bui ld ing,” V incent expla ined. “This is not just a focus on indiv idual rooms, but whole enterpr ises. We are moving very aggressively in th is direct ion and certa in ly have the strength, the products and the people to do so.”

COMMUNITY COMPLETES NEW LOUDSPEAKER TEST FACILITY

I n keeping with i ts commitment to accurate and complete loudspeaker technical data, Community

has opened a new, state-of-the-art indoor test faci l i ty at i ts factory in Chester, Pennsylvania USA. Designed by Charl ie Hughes of Excels ior Audio and operated

by Senior Measurement Technician, Hadi Sumoro, the new test faci l i ty enables loudspeaker measurements with unprecedented accuracy and precis ion. With i ts indoor locat ion, the new faci l i ty makes i t possible to control temperature and humidity. I t e l iminates wind problems and minimises interference from outside noise sources. This al lows Community engineers to accurately measure complex loudspeaker data and to gather polar data in precise 1-degree resolut ion. Measurements are automated with an ELF robotic rotator system control led by EASERA™ software. The new test faci l i ty fo l lows in the footsteps of a long tradit ion of loudspeaker measurements at Community. Community’s f i rst test faci l i ty was a 32-foot-high tower bui l t in 1975 on a southeast Pennsylvania hi l l top, which provided measurements that c losely corresponded to anechoic chamber standards and establ ished Community as an ear ly leader in providing accurate loudspeaker speci f icat ions. In 1994, Community bui l t a new outdoor test faci l i ty extending from the third f loor of i ts factory bui ld ing in Chester. At 40 feet above the ground and with a microphone to loudspeaker distance of 39 feet, th is system is st i l l ut i l ised today and uses TDS software to col lect far-f ie ld and free-space data and to minimise outdoor noise and ref lect ions. The outdoor test system provides the abi l i ty to measure low-frequency

loudspeakers in near-free-space condit ions. Regarding the new test faci l i ty, Community’s Director of Technical Services, Dave Howden said: “Community’s outdoor measurement systems were an important resource for our TAG (Technical Appl icat ions Group) group as we worked with systems designers and end users. Now, this new indoor faci l i ty provides phase data and other new information for systems designers and wi l l help Community’s engineer ing team design the next generat ion of great loudspeakers.”

TOA ESTABLISHES SALES SUBSIDIARY IN VIETNAM

T OA Corporat ion (Headquar ters : Kobe, Japan, Pres ident , C.E.O. : Ken j i I tan i ) has opened a sa les

subs id iary in Hano i , V ie tnam. The open ing ceremony of CONG TY TNHH TOA ELECTRONICS VIETNAM (TOA ELECTRONICS VIETNAM COMPANY L IMITED) was he ld on May 9, in a t tendance of Pres ident Ken j i I tan i and i ts bus iness par tners .

Pr ior to th is estab l ishment , sa les in the V ie tnam market had been taken charge by the representat ive o ff ice opened in 2011. “Sa les per formance in V ie tnam had shown a favourab le growth in the past few years wi th suppor t f rom our loca l d is t r ibutors , and TOA saw the oppor tun i ty to have a f i rm estab l ishment

Appointed Manag ing D i rector o f TOA V ie tnam off ice , Yu ich i ro Hon jo says that w i th the expans ion o f the team, i t w i l l a l low them to react to the customers and market more prompt ly. By s t rengthen ing the eng ineer ing and techn ica l capab i l i t ies , i t w i l l a lso enhance i ts pre-sa les and a f ter-sa les serv ices, as we l l as he ighten consumers’ conf idence in the company and i ts products .

Atmos room, we needed surround loudspeakers capable of ful l-range response, and Meyer Sound sounded so much better than anything else we’d experienced,” said Savage.

The monitoring system incorporates three Acheron® 80 screen loudspeakers, eight HMS-12 and 29 HMS-10 cinema surround loudspeakers, six X-800C high-power cinema subwoofers, and two 500-HP subwoofers in the rear for surround low end.

Chris Goodes, Soundfirm’s Chief Re-recording Mixer, has mixed a number of projects in the new room. “The f irst thing I took to was the top end,” he said. “The Acherons are so much better than what we’d been using before. The dialogue clarity is outstanding, and you can trust what you’re doing with equalisation. You never have to question whether the speaker is changing the sound. And you can work for 10 or 12 hours on this system without fatigue.”

Projects mixed by Goodes since opening include “The Monkey King,” an Atmos mix for the Chinese market; “Predestination,” a feature starr ing Ethan Hawke; “Deep Sea Challenge,” a James Cameron documentary; and

“Hidden Universe” for IMAX release.

Savage appreciates the streamlined instal lat ion of the 48 V remotely powered surround loudspeakers. “Instal lat ion and setup was much easier than the conventional approach,” he noted. “You simply run a single cable with 48 V power and audio for the internal ly bi-amplif ied surrounds. This saves instal lat ion costs, part icularly when you’re deal ing with an Atmos system.”

The new mixing theatre also includes a Harrison Trion mixing console with 240 inputs, f ive Avid Pro Tools systems, a 10-meter-wide screen, and a Christ ie 4K projector with 3D capabil i ty.

“The independent mixers who use the room al l comment on how great it sounds,” reported Savage. “The Meyer Sound monitors have l ived up to our high expectations, and exceeded them—particularly with Atmos.”

Established in 1983, Soundfirm lists sound mixing credits for such iconic fi lms as “Crocodile Dundee,” “Mad Max 2,” and “Mad Max Beyond the Thunderdome.” In addition to its Melbourne location, Soundfirm also maintains post-production facil it ies in Sydney and Beij ing.

I t seems Integrated Systems Europe 2014 has reached a mi lestone in i ts history after attract ing more than 50,000 registered attendees for the

f i rst t ime, thus cementing i ts reputat ion as the world’s most popular event for professional audio-visual and electronic systems integrat ion.

The f inal total attendance of 51,003 exceeded the expectat ions of the organisers, with a record 952 exhibitors showcasing their latest products and helping to fuel attendee growth of 15 per cent over last year’s number of 44,151.

Other key draws to the event were an enlarged Professional Development programme including off-f loor training sessions hosted by ISE’s co-

owners CEDIA and InfoComm Internat ional, with both associat ions also contr ibut ing seminars to the event’s new on-f loor theatres dedicated to Resident ia l and Commercial Solut ions. Between them, these sessions attracted over 2,400 people, with InfoComm experiencing an almost three-fold increase in i ts educat ion traff ic over 2013 after offer ing free session vouchers to every attendee this year.

This year’s pre-show events programme included the third edit ion of the Smart Bui lding Conference, the al l-new Investor Showcase and Audio Forum, and an Opening Keynote Address, ‘Kick-Start ing the Market for Bui lding Automation’, by Cisco’s Dr Dirk Schlesinger.

These events attracted a further 1,000 attendees, with hundreds more also signing up for partner events dur ing the show, such as the SVGE’s Sport Faci l i ty Integrat ion Summit, digita l-s ignage market br ief ings and tours from Invidis Consult ing and the Themed Entertainment Associat ion tour.

Mike Blackman, Managing Director of Integrated Systems Events, said: “Our big theme this year was content, and we bel ieve we have del ivered on our promise to enhance our event – and attract more attendees – by offer ing a combinat ion of technical tra ining, market intel l igence, real-world case studies and networking opportunit ies that is unmatched by any comparable event in Europe.”

Whi le the show’s attendance cont inues to r ise, there has been no di lut ion in the spending power of ISE’s v is i tors i f the show’s exhibitor rebooking trend is anything to go by. By the t ime the event ended on 6 February, on-site rebooking for ISE 2015 stood at 33,450 net square metres, compared with the 2014 show’s total net footpr int of 36,035. The rebooking f igure is 10 per cent higher than the equivalent a year ago.

“By al l standards of measurement, ISE 2014 was extraordinar i ly successful ,” said David Labuskes, CTS, RCDD, Execut ive Director and CEO of InfoComm Internat ional. “ I t was a great way to kick off the industry calendar, and a spectacular way

to begin InfoComm Internat ional’s 75th year. What started out as a smal l show in Geneva 11 years ago has blossomed into a truly thr iv ing event. That f i rst ISE was an important ear ly step in our associat ion’s journey beyond i ts US borders, but would be largely unrecognisable to this year’s ISE attendees.”

Wendy Gri ff i ths, Execut ive Director of CEDIA Region 1, shared this sent iment. “ ISE 2014 was phenomenal in every respect. This year’s event demonstrated outstanding internat ional growth and CEDIA benef i ted hugely from this success. More CI companies became CEDIA members at the show than ever before, every CEDIA session in the new ISE Resident ia l Solut ions Theatre was jam-packed and CEDIA training courses avai lable off the show f loor were also wel l-attended.”

The next Integrated Systems Europe wi l l take place at the Amsterdam RAI from 10–12 February 2015.

LAVA magazine had the opportunity to v is i t one of the most s igni f icant and hugely popular tradeshows in the pro audio-visual and

l ight ing industry, Prol ight + Sound Guangzhou. As one would expect from the exhibit ion’s sheer s ize, the four-day event saw another successful year with a growth of 23.4 per cent and 24.2 per cent in exhibitors and vis i tors respect ively compared to last year.

There was up to 1,138 exhibitors from regions as far as Europe and South America, and a staggering 60,038 local and internat ional v is i tors. I t is also worth not ing that the exhibit ion space was expanded to 11 hal ls from the previous 9, which amounts to 110,000 square metres, to accommodate the increasing number of attendees and exhibitors.

The event was wel l organised, with the sprawl ing complex div ided according to six sect ions spread

across 13 hal ls: Audio Brand Name Hal l ( reserved for wel l-recognised brands in the professional audio industry), Pro Audio Hal l , Pro Light ing Hal l , Music Instrument Hal l , Enping Microphone Hal l and KTV Hal l . This made i t convenient for v is i tors, especial ly f i rst-t imers, to manoeuvre their way through the fair, which stretched up to three f loors.

Prol ight + Sound Guangzhou also saw an encouraging r ise in the number of internat ional brands part ic ipat ing in this year’s event. Among the many newcomers to the show was dB Technologies, a manufacturer of audio products from Ita ly. The company’s Internat ional Sales Manager, Mr Gianluca Dalessandro, expressed posit ive sent iments with regard to the tradeshow. “ I t ’s a very good show to be in. This is the f i rst t ime we have showed new technologies with our new distr ibutor. People are posit ive about our brand. We have seen customers from China, Asia Paci f ic,

37Jul-Sep 2014

Canada and Lat in America. The China market is quite compl icated but a brand l ike ours can have a very good development here, just l ike how we are doing in the rest of the world.”

These internat ional brands hai led from 25 countr ies and regions and included: ADJ, AKG, Al len & Heath, audio-technica, Avid, Beyerdynamic, Bose, D.A.S., Db Technologies, FBT, HARMAN, JBL, JTS, König & Meyer (K&M), L- Acoust ics, LaserWorld, Mart in Audio, Mart in Professional, McCauley, Meyer Sound, NEXO, Phi l ips, Proel, Sennheiser, SHURE, SOUNDKING, Studiomaster, TASCAM, TC Electronic, TEAC, TWAUDiO and YAMAHA. The countr ies and regions represented were Austr ia, Austral ia, Belgium, Brazi l , Canada, China, the Czech Republ ic, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Hong Kong, I ta ly, Japan, Korea, Liechtenstein, Lithuania, the Nether lands, Portugal, Slovakia, Spain, Switzer land, Taiwan, the UK and the US.

This increase in part ic ipat ion did not go unnoticed as exhibitors brought up the fact that the show had become more internat ional s ince cooperat ing with Messe Frankfurt. This provided great incent ive for companies seeking to branch out into untouched terr i tor ies. “We have seen more internat ional buyers this t ime, especial ly from South America,” said Mr Xin Liao, a representat ive of Nightsun Pro Light ing Equipment. “This is a new market that we intended to expand our business to and we have engaged in ser ious discussions with some of them. I th ink the show is a must-attend event for the industry and certainly we wi l l return next year.”

Simi lar ly, a wel l-recognised industry event l ike Prol ight + Sound Guangzhou also provided an effect ive platform for brands to reach out to the Chinese pro audio and l ight ing market, which has seen exceptional growth over recent years.

This prospect was what motivated Mr Andrew Kong, Market ing Manager of Mart in Professional (HK) to jo in the fair. He said: “The show is r ight in the centre of the China audio industry. I th ink China’s entertainment market is huge. This is where the internat ional brands should be in.”

Mr Kar l-Heinz Käs, the Managing Director of RTI Display Laser Systems (Switzer land), shared the same sent iment: “China is a big market. We now sel l more in the Asian market than Europe. Chinese people rely on foreign brands because they see that i t doesn’t make sense just to focus on the pr ice and then having a fai lure in the show. The Chinese market is important for us because you can’t f ind big-scale shows anywhere else.”

The sheer number of v is i tors to Prol ight + Sound Guangzhou also posed an ideal opportunity for leading brands to reveal their newest products in the market. Artsound Internat ional Development, the Chinese agent for Sennheriser, had launched their new headphones for professional DJs at the show. I ts Market ing Director, Mr Rio Li , said of the event: “ I t ’s the best place to launch our new products to the Chinese market as this is the biggest trade event in the country. At a big show l ike this we can meet with many buyers and demonstrate the advantages

38 Jul-Sep 2014

of Sennheiser’s products which ult imately increase our market share.”

The show’s ideal locat ion in Guangzhou also attracted buyers worldwide to source in the pro audio and l ight ing products manufactur ing hub, especial ly s ince this year’s internat ional v is i tors have increased by 24.5 per cent compared to the 2013 edit ion. First t ime vis i tor from the US, Mr Gary Moran, a stagehand for the San Francisco Convent ion Centre, said: “You have pretty much everything here from the beginning to the end of product ion of a show such as trussing and motors, the distr ibut ion and connect ions. The qual i ty of Chinese products is very good. I wanted to see what’s new so that when the products come to the US I have a better understanding.”

“There are so many manufacturers here, and I can f ind them al l in one place. I f I didn’t v is i t th is show it would take so many months to f ind contacts. Here I make contacts and next week I wi l l v is i t factor ies,” added Mr Miguel Topete, Director for Top Line, a Mexican audio systems manufacturer.

Of course, no tradeshow is complete without the array of fr inge programmes that ran concurrent ly with the show. The ones hosted at Prol ight + Sound Guangzhou focused on the industry development trends and market intel l igence. Some of the fr inge programmes included: Appl icat ions of AV System in the Hotel Industry; this popular seminar was a discussion on opt imising high-end AV systems for hotel and MICE industr ies.

Lighting Technology for Television Broadcasting Studio Forum 2014: Continuing last year’s success, this forum was wel l-attended by TV stat ion heads, engineers and l ight ing technicians who exchanged their v iews about televis ion and stage l ight ing. One of the speakers Mr Andreas Gause, Sales and Market ing Director of Gerr iets

39Jul-Sep 2014

GmbH, Germany commented: “ I th ink i t ’s a good networking opportunity for me to introduce our latest technology whi le exchanging our experience with the local industry experts and shar ing our knowledge with the audience.”

The 4th Edit ion Pro Audio Technology Seminar: Hosted by the Guangdong Associat ion of Recording Engineers, this equal ly popular seminar saw around 200 part ic ipants, including TV stat ion heads, chief engineers, audio technicians and experts from across China, shar ing their audio and broadcast ing technology knowledge. Topics include: Trends of HDTV Surround Sound Product ion and Broadcast ing, which was led by Mr Yan Zhang, Senior Technical Manager, Dolby Laborator ies Internat ional Services (Bei j ing) Co Ltd; Case study – 2014 Live TV Concert Stereo Broadcast, led by Mr Li Guangzhou, Mr Huang Xuechao and Mr Wu Hao, Audio Sect ion, Product ion Department, Guangdong Televis ion.

Outdoor Line Array DemoThis demonstrat ion featured 28 leading internat ional and local audio brands in the open area outside hal ls 4.1 and 6.1. Vis i tors were able to experience

professional concert sound effects. Some part ic ipat ing brands included: CLASSIC SOUND, CPL, CVR, DE Acoust ics, Dr i l lnew Audio, ERIC, FDB, FINESPL, IBO, JAZZPRO, LYNX, PhsydBol Audio, QANON, RealSound, RVS, SAE, TASSO AUAL, TB, TPA, VEE, WAVK and ZSOUND.

Other concurrent programmes included The Guangdong Performing Industry Exchange and Trading Forum 2014, a forum where more than 300 performance groups exchanged knowledge on the latest industry technology and developments, and the HC360 Business Matching Programme, which provided exhibitors with new business opportunit ies as the organisers had invited more than 900 buyers to attend the show. I t was an effect ive avenue for networking.

Key trade associat ions from vert ical markets also organised buyer delegat ions, making the show a connect ing point for performing art professionals. Apart from meeting and networking with exhibitors, the delegat ion also vis i ted factor ies in Guangdong Province, one of the world’s most important pro audio and l ight ing manufactur ing hubs, to understand current industry developments in the region.

Overal l , i t was a hugely successful and wel l-executed tradeshow that has received favourable reviews from both vis i tors and exhibitors.

“The signi f icant growth in numbers is a promising sign that the show is developing in the r ight direct ion. A major i ty of exhibitors and vis i tors also not iced that the show’s organisat ion, exhibit qual i ty, brand var iety, internat ional ism and energet ic business atmosphere had improved quite a lot,” said Ms Fiona Chiew, Deputy General Manager of Messe Frankfurt (Shanghai ) .

Mr Hanrong Wu, Director of Guangdong Internat ional Science and Technology Exhibit ion Company (STE) added: “Moving forward, we hope Prol ight + Sound Guangzhou cont inues to del iver the best business platform for professional audio and l ight ing market in China.”

The next Prol ight + Sound Guangzhou wi l l take place from 2 to 5 March 2015. For more information, please vis i t www.prolight-sound-guangzhou.hk.messefrankfurt.com .

According to stat ist ics, the 2014 GETshow attracted 48, 659 vis i tors from 68 countr ies. Based on stat ist ics of on-site quest ionnaires, 87 per cent of exhibitors maintained that the exhibit ion was more professional and advantageous; 85 per cent of audio cl ients supported the “si lent exhibit ion” at the audio hal l and 90 per cent of the audience thought the exhibit ion was more advantageous and considered i t a leading trade fair in the industry.

First Silent Display of Exhibits in Three Audio Halls The 2014 GETshow also took the lead in holding China’s f i rst s i lent exhibit ion, ensur ing that the three audio hal ls presented “si lent demonstrat ions” dur ing the four-day exhibit ion. This was an effort to avoid noise pol lut ion and to maintain a favourable and comfortable environment for both exhibitors and vis i tors to conduct business at the fair.

The organisers of the 2014 GETshow began discussing the possibi l i ty of a “si lent display” in the audio hal ls at the beginning of the show’s preparat ion after consult ing reputable brands for their expert opinion. What was encouraging to know was that most of the audio exhibitors dur ing the exhibit ion compl ied with this arrangement, thus prevent ing the deafeningly loud atmosphere that occurred in previous years.

This green in i t iat ive was met with posit ive results in the industry, with professionals highl ight ing that i t has brought about a new development model for other domestic professional audio exhibit ions. On-site exhibitors and vis i tors (both local and internat ional ) a lso sang praises of this s i lent display. The success of this green in i t iat ive highl ighted the important role of the Guangdong Entertainment Equipment Industry Chamber, one of the show’s organisers, in giv ing ful l scope to standard industr ia l enterpr ises and to promote sel f-discipl ine among them.

China Entertainment Equipment Industry Guangzhou Summit ForumOn February 27, the Guangdong Entertainment Equipment Industry Chamber led the organisat ion of the “China Entertainment Equipment Industry Guangzhou Summit Forum”. Over 40 representat ives from top brands al l over the country gathered to discuss hot topics along the themes of “competit ion, cooperat ion, win-win and development”. Forum attendees exchanged views and opinions on many issues, such as fr iendly competit ion among brands, market development trends and industr ia l sel f-discipl ine norms. This forum showed the importance

of Guangdong Entertainment Equipment Industry Chamber in promoting industr ia l development, and maintained that the organisat ion has set a good example for sel f-discipl ine and promotion of corporate development with pract ical spir i t .

Annual Exhibit ion of Stage Art In order to introduce innovat ive thinking and development concepts in the industry, the 2014 GETshow cont inued to join hands with the Stage Art Society of China to hold the 2014 China Stage Art (Guangzhou) Annual Exhibit ion. This year’s exhibit ion was in the No. 4 Hal l and mainly included works that won awards in key domestic and foreign act iv i t ies of 2013. Over 80 stage art works by 60 designers from the 10th China Art Fest ival , the 13th China Theatre Fest ival and the Bri t ish WSD Internat ional Stage Art Exhibit ion were selected. Furthermore, 600 latest works from theatre, f i lm and TV design teachers and students from 10 domestic col leges and universit ies were exhibited as wel l . V is i tors came in an endless stream during the ent ire exhibit ion per iod because of the novel and qual i ty content that was exhibited.

During the exhibit ion, the organisers simultaneously launched an award ceremony in order to better encourage inst i tut ions, col leges and universit ies to part ic ipate in the exhibit ion with enthusiasm. Some of the awards given out included: the Excel lent Organisat ion Award, Space Creat iv i ty Award, Stage Art Teaching Achievements Award, Planning Award and Organisat ion Award.

T he internat ional ly renowned Prol ight + Sound Frankfurt tradeshow ended i ts run in March after four days packed with product launches,

events and seminars.

“Around 110,000 vis i tors from 142 countr ies ref lect the cont inuing high level of interest shown by the music and event sectors in innovat ions and new developments,” said Det lef Braun, Member of the Board of Management of Messe Frankfurt. “This year’s Musikmesse and Prol ight + Sound were character ised by a high vis i tor standard and a wi l l ingness to place orders.”

This compensated for the sl ight decl ine in v is i tor numbers compared to the record set last year. The on-going high level of exhibitor sat isfact ion

at both fairs also represented a good result . Altogether, 2,242 internat ional exhibitors from 57 countr ies presented their products and services at Musikmesse and Prol ight + Sound.

The innovat ive power of the event-technology sector and the investment potent ia l for perfect ly staged events were evident this year. A total of 897 exhibitors from 42 countr ies demonstrated their innovat iveness, versat i l i ty and dynamism with the latest products from the worlds of audio, l ight ing, theatre and stage technology, AV media technology, as wel l as v isual communicat ion and systems integrat ion.

The exhibitors gave the fair a posit ive rat ing in al l respects with almost 80 percent saying they were

sat isf ied to extremely sat isf ied with the course of business. This general trend was conf irmed by Peter Klotz, CEO of Klotz Audio Interface Systems: “For us, Prol ight + Sound is the most important platform where we can meet al l nat ional and internat ional customers. The fair was wel l attended and the standard of both nat ional and internat ional v is i tors was very high. This is decis ive for us and compensates for the sl ight decl ine in v is i tor numbers.”

Dierk Elwart of Amptown System Company (ASC) summed up the fair in extremely posit ive terms: “At Prol ight + Sound, we can reach the maximum number of customers at the same place. We have not iced an increase in the number of v is i tors to our exhibit ion stand for many years. This year, we were very del ighted to welcome many trade vis i tors from the theatre segment.”

As in the past, numerous new products were launched at both Prol ight + Sound and Musikmesse – from extraordinary percussion instruments, v ia electronical ly ampl i f ied recorders, to wind instruments that communicate v ia WLAN. The mega social trend, mobi l i ty, is also gaining ground in the musical- instrument and event sectors with innovat ive products being shown, which make music making and audio product ion easier when travel l ing. Smartphones and tablets are increasingly being used as electronic sound generators or control tools for hardware. Moreover, pianists and whole orchestras are also del ighted that, for example, they can now use tablet PCs as sheet music. Creat ive water and f i re elements are being used more and more to create even more effect ive events. The trend towards LED l ight ing also cont inues. Addit ional ly, Prol ight + Sound clear ly showed the growing signi f icance of networking and systems integrat ion in the f ie ld of event technology.

Prol ight + Sound also underscored their status as internat ional sources of impulses with a comprehensive spectrum of seminars, lectures and workshops. The Eventplaza Conference

offered numerous information events on trends, strategies and expert ise for the l ive-entertainment and theatre sectors with part icular attent ion being paid to the subject of event safety. Addit ional ly, speakers from the media-technology sector passed on their knowledge about sound and event technology at the Prol ight + Sound Conference.

The signi f icance of Prol ight + Sound as information and training platforms was emphasised by Det lef R. Schulz, Head of the Nat ional Pol i t ics & Communicat ion Div is ion of the Associat ion for Media and Event Technology

(Verband für Medien- und Veranstaltungstechnik): “Prol ight + Sound is a very important platform for us. In part icular, the seminar programme is a relevant part where the focus is on training for special ist personnel, a subject of great importance for our sector, because the demands on events and, therefore, on special ist staff cont inue to grow.”

The next Prol ight + Sound Frankfurt wi l l be held in Frankfurt am Main from 15 to 18 Apri l 2015.

“We are very encouraged with this year’s event outcome. In addit ion to increased headcount and gross area occupied, our onsite surveys show that there was great sat isfact ion al l round. years ahead, especial ly in the l ight of new f indings in InfoComm’s recent ly concluded 2014 AV Market Def in i t ion and Strategy Survey,” said Richard Tan, Execut ive Director of InfoCommAsia. Prel iminary results of this survey indicate that the Asia Pacif ic has now overtaken North America as the largest AV market in the world, with China on top of the Asia Pacif ic stakes, and set to widen i ts lead over the other sub-regions.

The buzz from the crowd of v is i tors at InfoComm China 2014, packing al l s ix hal ls even within the f i rst hour of opening, is a testament to the huge opportunit ies in China. Not only did the show achieve yet another record number of v is i tors – 20,738, or seven per cent increase compared to the 2013 show – there was also an increase in the number of overseas vis i tors from India, South Korea, Taiwan

and Southeast Asia, attest ing to the growing importance of the event in the Asia Pacif ic. Summit attendance registered an even more impressive increase – up 46 per cent, or 3,455 delegates over the three days.

Among the companies that have booked larger booths for InfoComm China 2015 are Sony, Leyard, Lutron, Sennheiser, BenQ, Liantronics, Creator and Seeyoo. Christ ie Digita l had great success with their bold, cross-branding col laborat ion for this year’s event, offer ing an innovat ive 360-degree project ion – the f i rst-of- i ts-kind in the industry – of the coveted Jaguar car. Said Lu Yi, Christ ie’s China Market ing Manager: “We are very happy with our part ic ipat ion this year, and wi l l def in i te ly be back again next year.”

Leyard Optoelectronic noted that the number of v is i tors to i ts booth has been increasing year after year. “This could be due to our larger booth size and our booth design,” said Jin Wangyang, Market ing Supervisor. “The scale of the show has grown. This ref lects i ts growing inf luence in the industry, enabl ing i t to attract more professional v is i tors from not only China but other parts of Asia too.”

Zhang Shaogang, Deputy General Manager of Bei j ing Lanxum New Technology Co., Ltd., who has vis i ted seven previous edit ions of InfoComm China, remarked: “This year’s exhibit ion is the largest ever. As a systems integrator, this is the best place to look for suppl iers; I can get l i teral ly every audio-visual product and technology, including even smal l accessories l ike microphones, brackets and cables.”

The expanded scope of the exhibits at this year’s event was also not lost on the vis i tors. Zhou Yun from Sichuan Xun Hao Light ing and Sound Systems Engineer ing Co., Ltd. observed: “My greatest impression this year is the signi f icant increase in the number of audio exhibitors and audio products. Sennheiser, Shure, Audio-Technica, BXB, D&B and al l the major brands have their latest products on exhibit . I have managed to f ind some suitable suppl iers for some of my ongoing projects, and we wi l l take our discussions further in terms of col laborat ion.”

Despite the smal ler s ize, the show witnessed a 27 per cent increase in exhibitors from the LED l ight ing industry compared to 2013. This encouraging trend may be a result of the region’s growing interest in environmental ly-fr iendly technological solut ions. “Growth in this specif ic show vert ical is not surpr is ing,” explained Richard Brook, the Exhibitor Director. “Several Middle Eastern countr ies have already banned incandescent l ight bulbs due to their ineff ic iency, which opens the door for a growing interest in LED l ights. Also, a number of GCC countr ies are looking to reduce their carbon footpr int, and with events such as the EXPO 2020 and 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar, there has been greater demand for LED l ight ing in the region as a sustainable solut ion.”
