Covenant To CareSummer 2019Serving Seniors. Enriching Lives.

Dear Friends and Family Members:

A special thanks to all those who sponsored and attended our Annual Concert and Auction in April. We appreciate you making it another successful event. Reagan Strange and Kirk Whalum provided us with some great music and Ron Childers from Action News 5 did a fantastic job as our auctioneer. It takes many volunteers as well to assist us which we deeply appreciate. The events we have require a real team effort.

We also held our first End of Life Planning Seminar which had 30 individuals from around the Diocese come and participate. Our presenters provided our participants great information about having “The Conversation” about End of Life Planning with their loved ones. While all of these decisions are difficult, with proper planning and discussions with family members or friends the process can become much easier in the long run. We are planning to have another session in the near future. We hope that you will plan to come.

If you will bear with me, I would like to share a personal story with you. As you may or may not have known, my Aunt Jean lived here at Ave Maria in St. Francis House for over 4 years. She had dementia. She just passed away on May 5th at the age of 92.

Before she came to Ave Maria, when she first arrived in Memphis, she needed rehabilitation and there was no opening here. So she rehabbed at another facility and did fine and ended up going to an independent living facility in Germantown. Well, she ended up falling three times within the first three months and each time she was sent out to the hospital. With that third fall, she ended up being in the hospital for over a week. Needless to say, my wife and I decided it was time to do something else and so there was an opening here at St. Francis House and my aunt received rehabilitation and did just great. In fact, the whole time she lived here at Ave Maria, she never went to the hospital one time. The nurses did a beautiful job with her for over 4 years. I should name them individually, but I may forget someone. The Shabaz in the House also did a wonderful job with her. Ave Maria Mission

The mission of Ave Maria Home is to assist

the aged, sick, and destitute through:

Improving the moral, social, and spiritual

conditions of its beneficiaries;

Continuing the stewardship of human,

physical, and financial resources in

conjunction with the Catholic community;

Facilitating visitation by family, friends, and

members of the community;

Providing a commitment to long-term and

rehabilitative care.

Ave Maria May Crowning Ave Maria’s annual May Crowning was held May 2 in the Father Leonard Oglesby Memorial Chapel. Residents and staff, family members, and friends gathered to honor Mary, the mother of Jesus, for whom Ave Maria Home is dedi-cated. This year’s program included an Opening Prayer and Thanksgiving and Invocation by Father Mike Morgera; readings by Dan Wilson and Dave Dahler; and music by Dr. Kelly Kramer and the Diocesan Choir. Roses were presented to the Statue of Mary by Ave Ma-ria residents and clients Donna Klinke, Helen Davis, Mary Ann Dote, Kay Harty, Loraine Holton, and Prudence Walk-er. Vivian O’Brien was this year’s May Crowner, placing a crown of flowers on the Statue of Mary.

Helen Davis placed a rose at the statue of Mary.

Do you have a favorite song? Maybe it’s the song you danced to at your wedding; the song that was popular the year you graduated high school; or the song that you and your friends listened to over and over again while driving around town on a Friday night. It could be a song you sang to your children or grandchildren when they were babies or maybe it was your school’s Fight Song.

We all have a song that takes us back to a certain place or time, the moment we hear it played. Did you know that when a person has dementia, music can still make them think of that memory? The feelings we have from the music we hear never leaves our memory. When someone has dementia and they can’t speak anymore, music still makes them smile. When someone has dementia and they seem sad and lonely, music perks them up.

There is a story about a man named Henry who was living in a nursing facility. Henry sat in his wheelchair with his head down most of the day. When headphones were placed on his head with some of his favorite music, Henry came to life. He was singing and smiling and recalling a memory. When the headphones were taken off, Henry sat up, spoke in sentences, and had his eyes wide open--things he hadn’t done in a long time. You can watch a YouTube video of Henry when you search “Story of Henry - music and memory.”

We recently had our annual May Crowning at Ave Maria, and I got the chance to see how a familiar song never leaves you. During the ceremony, I saw an elder who rarely speaks, unless you asked her a question, sing “Immaculate Mary.” During the song, she was tapping her hand on her knee, had a smile on her face, and didn’t miss a single word.

Music is often used to help those with Dementia by treating depression, agitation, and boredom. During certain stages of that disease, when the elder is disconnected from just about everything, music is one thing that still has an effect on them.

At Ave Maria, we schedule musicians and music programs regularly for our residents and clients. We have a variety of entertainers who come to Ave Maria, so that we can help our elders re-live a memory or two. Those entertainers who share their talents with us can see the excitement all around when they start performing, but only the elder can relive the memory.

Have you thought about your favorite song by now? The one that takes you back to that certain place? Behind every favorite song, there is an untold story.

I was recently asked to speak at a memorial gathering for a man

whom I had never met. In talking with the son about his Dad, he told me that one of his father’s favorite expressions was, “Everybody lives in their own world.” Those words made an impression on me and made me think. It made me think of all the people around us. Every day we see people whom we don’t know. People pass us in their cars, during our travels and errands. We see them when we’re shopping, at ball games, and at the movies. We see them at restaurants and at church, but do not know them or anything about their lives. To tell the truth, I never gave a lot of thought about people, I don’t know, who I see throughout my day. They were just a part of my daily life, and in some cases, they were in my way, since I was in my usual hurry mode to get somewhere. At first, I thought that comment, “Everyone lives in their own world”, was just an off the cuff remark about how people think. However, the more I thought about it, I looked upon this observation as a reason to care for others and “their world.” Most of the time we are so busy trying to take care of our duties and responsibilities, which is OK, that we don’t take the time to see what may be going on in the lives of others, which is not OK. Here, at Ave Maria, God has taken the first step that allows those of us who are staff to see into the world of others. He has called us by name to be here, serving the precious people He sent to us, so that we could provide the love and care that they deserve. We are together, not by chance, but by the will of God. He has put the residents, the staff, and volunteers together to fulfill the words of Jesus, “Do not let your hearts be troubled.” Those of us, who have been called to Ave Maria, are experiencing a feeling of love for each other and the comfort of answering God’s call. We get to look into the eyes and hearts of the residents and clients we give comfort to. What a world. What a life. Come join us.

The 2019 Leadership Bartlett Class came to Ave Maria for a tour and lunch, and to learn more about our programs and services. The group was very interested in seeing Lourdes, one of Ave Maria’s Rehab Green Houses, and the Rehab Courtyard. This year’s tour was part of the Leadership Bartlett session on Healthcare in Bartlett.

Since January, Ave Maria Home residents, clients and staff have been blessed to have Sister Skolastika Wea volunteer-ing with us. Working with Deacon Jack Chitwood and Deacon Norman Alexander, Sister distributes Holy Com-munion to residents in our Green Houses and participates in daily Communion services. She also helps in the Adult Day Center, spending time with our ADC clients. Sister Skolasticka is from Indonesia and belongs to the Holy Spirit Missionary Sisters order. We wish her the best and will miss her, as she is moving to Chicago this summer to embark on the next journey of her calling.

Sister Skolastika and Adult Day Center clients make pea-nut butter and jelly sandwiches for the Urban Bicycle Min-istry. Each month, Adult Day Center clients put together goodie bags of sandwiches, snacks, bottled water, per-sonal care items, and clothing for the Urban Bike Ministry to distribute to homeless individuals living in downtown Memphis.
