Covalent Compounds
Sharing is Caring
Summary of ionic compounds
• 1. Electrically neutral – The net charge of the compound is zero
• 2. Formed from Cation(s) & Anion(s)– Electrons are given away or gained
• 3. Metal ion and a Nonmetal ion
• 4. 8 IS GREAT
Binary Covalent Compounds
PRIMARY DIFFERENCES:
•Made up from two NONMETALS
•Electrons are shared to make an Octet
Water Molecule
Covalent bond of Carbon & Hydrogen
Covalent (Molecular) Compounds
• Stay together as molecules
• Are often INSOLUBLE – (won’t dissolve in water or other liquids)
• Do NOT conduct electricity
• Can be solids, liquids or gases at room temperature
• Low melting points
Ionic vs. Covalent
Ionic Compounds• Contain positive and
negative ions (Na+ Cl-) • Solids such as table salt• High melting and boiling
points• Separate into charged
particles in water to give a solution that conducts electricity
Covalent Compounds• Exist as neutral molecules
CO2
• Solids, liquids,or gases• Lower melting and boiling
points• Remain as same
molecule in water and will not conduct electricity
