COURTENAY NEWS Courtenay Gardens Primary School Issue 2 / 2020 20/02/2020 Term 1 has continued to begin smoothly, with students and teachers settling back into the school routine. Thank you to the approximately 40 parents who attended the two Meet the Principal- Morning Teas. It was wonderful to meet you, share a little about myself and listen to your questions and comments. It was obvious to me how passionate parents are about the school and want to see the best opportunities for their children to succeed. I raised the idea of starting a PFA (Parents and Friends Association.) There was some interest in starting this. Ideally we would need at least 5-6 committed parents to get this going. If you are interested in contributing to a PFA, please contact me. I was privileged to help select the school captains for 2020. Five year 6 boys and five year 6 girls were interviewed to determine the school captains. All ten students presented themselves with diligence and it was not an easy decision to select the four school captains. I am confident Andrew and Nastaran {school captains} and Xavier and Angela {school vice captains} will represent the school with pride in 2020. Following this, the students selected the house captains and junior school council representatives. All school leaders were presented their badges at the first assembly last Friday, with our special guest, City of Casey councillor, Ms. Amanda Stapledon. The next school assembly will be next Monday 24 th February. I am looking to have assembly weekly on Mondays at 9.00am. I encourage parents to stay each Monday and join us for assembly in the school gym. On Monday I sent out to families information on the nomination process for parent members of the school council. I encourage parents to consider this important role as an opportunity to be an active member of the school community. You can either self-nominate or nominate another person. You can collect the nomination forms from the school office. The nominations close next Tuesday 25 th February. If you would like more information about becoming a school councillor, please contact me. The school has decided to introduce the online school management system- COMPASS. This is an exciting new development for the school, which will significantly change the way the school communicates with parents. I will be informing parents of the progress with this, and I look forward to providing parents more details about the system and how it will be rolled out over the year. I am eager to see if parents are interested in instrumental music lessons for their children. This would be offered by ULearn Music. I met with the operator of this, Steve Roberts. These would be scheduled after school days, utilising the school facilities. Steve has set up a link for parents to find out more and register interest. If you would like to inquire about this, please contact myself or our music teacher Jenny Bell. https://ulearn.com.au/courtenay-gardens Last Friday, we had the school photos. Thank you to Kerry Bird for organising this; the day’s schedule went very smoothly. We look forward to seeing the finished photos. With regards to staffing, I am pleased to announce Jessica Mulley, 1M, has obtained a position that will see her continue in her teaching role for 2020. I have advertised an Assistant Principal position to commence in term 2. I am also exploring with staff, the option of employing a Wellbeing Officer. I have had some feedback from concerned parents about students crossing the road at the end of the day. These students are crossing the road, not at the manned council crossing points. This is very dangerous. Can you please discuss with your children the importance to cross the road at the crossings. This may also mean parents need to park and get out of their vehicles to meet their children. If you see illegal parking, please notify the City of Casey council. The school has no authority to enforce council parking rules. MAD DAY

To our wonderful CGPS Community, We would like to invite you to one of our favourite annual events of the year: MAD Day. MAD Day (Make A Difference Day) is a great chance to dress up in some crazy and funky looking outfits. Remember to bring a gold coin donation (and not to have any hair-colouring or face-paint). Some of the big questions that we are all wondering include... - Will Mr De Lay, on debut, lead the way with a crazy outfit? - Will Mr Robinson wear yet another wig? - Will Mr Ballard actually dress up, or will he just pluck something out from his 'unique' wardrobe? - Will the ageing CGPS netballers make another appearance? and - How much money will we raise for the STARLIGHT FOUNDATION? Come along on Friday the 28th of February as these questions will be answered from 9:15am. We can also let you know in advance that there will be a groovy 90's playlist running throughout the parade. We hope to see you there! Regards, The Education Committee.

Alkira Secondary College: Open night this year is on the 24th March from 5:30pm - 7:00pm.
