Northern College is an adult, residential college providing educational opportunities for people aged 19 and over. The college has been graded as outstanding by Ofsted. The college is set in the extensive grounds of Wentworth Castle, and is a site of outstanding historical, botanical and environmental interest.

Learners come from all over the country and we specialise in bringing people back into education, building confidence to proceed and the study and life skills necessary to get the best from a programme of learning. Learners often find that the experience of undertaking a short, intensive period of residential education is life changing.

Ofsted says the college has realised ‘its ambitious vision of providing outstanding adult residential and community education’ and ‘helped to empower and transform the lives of individuals, families and communities.’

Community Partnership LearningThe community learning department specialises in bringing people back into education, equipping them with the confidence, study and life skills necessary to get the best from their programme of learning. Many of our learners have experienced multiple barriers to learning including substance misuse, ill health, mental health issues, learning difficulties and disabilities. We specialise in working with harder to reach groups, those at some distance from the labour market and people who think learning is ‘not for them’. We also have a long and proud history of working with community groups and helping to develop the skills of their staff, including volunteers.

If you think your organisation, group, community or service users might be able to benefit from our provision, please contact the Community Learning Team on 01226 776000

We are particularly proud of our Families Working Together courses, where family groups attend a short residential course, away from all the other pressures in life, to build confidence and establish respect for each other. Groups explore the grounds and undertake a range of informal learning activities such as Digital Photography, Teambuilding and Family Action Planning.

??? Frequently Asked Questions

What happens when I apply? When we receive your application form, a tutor makes a decision about your ability to benefit from the course based on the information you provide. Therefore, it is helpful if you can complete the section on “why you want to come on the course”. If you are offered a place on a course, you need to return your confirmation as soon as possible as places are often limited. We often get more applicants than there are places so if you cannot attend, please let us know.

What’s included in the course? You may be staying residentially at the college. Accommodation is included along with breakfasts and evening meals during your stay. If you have particular dietary needs you will need to let us know. Most short courses last 2 nights although some courses may go on longer. There may be organised activities that take place in the evenings and there is a bar on campus. You can access the beautiful gardens surrounding the college and a multi-faith prayer room is available for use. All students have access to the Library and Learning Support Centre where there is access to computers, books, DVDs, newspapers and other resources. The college has a campus wide Wi-Fi network.

Will I fit in?The college welcomes applications from people who have had limited educational opportunities in the past and we work hard to address inequalities related to age, disability, race, faith, sex, sexual orientation, gender reassignment and social class. The college creates a welcoming, stimulating and safe environment where people from diverse backgrounds can work together. Whilst at college we expect everyone to be considerate of the rights and interests of other college users and ask you not to create a noise near the residential blocks after 11pm, to respect others’ property, to treat people with respect, to smoke only in the designated areas and take care of college buildings and furnishings.

Will I have to pay?Tuition fees vary for courses. You will find the fees alongside the name of the course. Some courses are free for all and most will be free for learners on certain types of benefit. You may qualify for free courses and this can be discussed with the Student Services team.

What support can I get on the course?Learners with specific needs may benefit from a confidential discussion with our Additional Learning Support Manager. Our dedicated Additional Learning Support team can provide advice, information and support to help learners reach their full potential.

What do I need to bring with me?You will need to bring your own towels and toiletries along with a notepad and pen for any course work you do. Think about how much money to bring to pay for lunches, snacks or in the bar. If coming with children have you packed their favourite toys to play with in the evening? Remember to notify us of any special requirements for either yourself or your child. Remember to bring your programme, which shows the times of the sessions.

Can my children come?We have a limited number of childcare places for children aged over 6 months and under 12 years. When applying for the course you can complete their details on the application form; remember to let us know if your child has any special needs. The Children’s Centre cannot take children who have been withdrawn from school. The campus is often undergoing restoration work so do be careful moving around the site and supervise children at all times.

Why are some courses marked with an asterisk(*)?Some courses are more specialised than others and might not be suitable for you without doing some other introductory courses first. You may need to have a guidance session with a member of staff to help you decide which courses may best suit your needs.

If you have any further questions please call a member of the Registry team on 01226 776000.
