MIDDLE SCHOOL

Course Description

The course is designed to provide a healthy and caring environment where students can develop competency in many movement forms. Activity units offered are structured for fitness, skill acquisition, enjoyment and expanding knowledge about rules and strategies of different sports and movement forms. They are also geared towards improving problem-solving skills through adventure sports. Interpersonal skills such as demonstrating respect, offering positive feedback, demonstrating responsible behavior in terms of physical & emotional safety, as well as maintaining good personal hygiene are essential for success in this course. The importance of valuing physical activity for its contribution to a healthy lifestyle is emphasized.

Course AimsIt is our intent that students will enhance their skills through various activities, in the following areas:

Cognitive SkillsUtilize critical thinking skills to apply offensive and defensive strategiesAnalyze performance for effective improvement in self and others, and contribute to effective

Physical Education content includes

Standard 1 (Athletic Skills)Demonstrate competency in many motor skills and movement patterns needed to perform a variety of physical activities.

Standard 2 (Cognitive Understanding)

Demonstrate understanding of movement concepts, principles, strategies, and tactics as they apply to the learning and performance of physical activities.

Standard 3 (Fitness)Participate regularly in physical activity.

Standard 4 (Fitness)

Achieve and maintain a health-enhancing level of physical fitness. Standard 5 (Responsibility & Respect)

Exhibit responsible personal and social behavior that respects self and others in physical activity settings.

Standard 6 (Appreciates Benefits) Value physical activity for health, enjoyment, challenge, self-expression, and social interaction.

OutcomesAt the completion of the course students will:

Methodology: 

Activity units last 2-5 weeks. Generally, the concentration during the initial weeks is on the skills specific to the activity. During the latter half of the unit, the students participate in lead-up activities/small group activities, and then the actual performance. Fitness is integrated into every unit on a daily basis.

Multi-cultural Integration:

Students will experience participating in multi cultural sports activities throughout the year.

Teachers will provide a grading rubric at the beginning of each unit.Student scores will be available on Skyward.
