Course selection for students in grade 9 going into grade 10

-30 credits (one credit = 110 hours of classwork)-Pass on grade 10 literacy test or take literacy course in grade 12-40 Community Hours (sheets on blog)-And a whole bunch of ESSENTIAL SKILLS in your toolbox which you will need to showcase at job interviews and carry from job to job.

What do I need to graduate from high school?

I’m still not clear what PATHWAYS are?

Always work at the highest level pathway until grade 11. However it is more important that you are successful in the correct pathway then failing in a pathway that is too hard for you.

Of the 30 credits required to graduate, please remind me what they are?

No. Students are recommended to do a ½ day in grade 11 and perhaps a full day in grade 12, if they so choose. Nor can you start an apprenticeship in grade 10.

Can I do Coop in grade 10?

On-line courses are not for everyone, especially in grade 10. You must be a strong, independent learner.

However, many students enjoy the flexibility it gives them in their timetable and the fact that they can take almost any course offered in Ontario.

Can I take an on-line course in grade 10?

Students must be in grade 11 to register in a SHSM program. Glengarry has three: Transportation, Health and Wellness and Hospitality (focus Tourism).

How do I read those darn course codes?

To graduate from high school, you need 30 credits.10 of them need to be in French is you wish to graduate with your French Immersion certificate.

You take 3 French credits in grade 9, 3 French credits in grade 10, 2 credits in grade 11 and 2 credits in grade 12.

I’m in French Immersion, how many more credits do I need after grade 10?

If you are a strong student and have a very good recommendation from your teachers, the two courses we recommend are: Introduction to Business BBI2OE and Introduction to Computers (ICS 2OE).

However you need to select 8 courses on your course selection and then submit another sheet indicating that you have an interest in one of these two courses.

I would really like to try an on-line course in grade 10. Is there one you recommend?

Can I select grade 11 and 12 courses?

• In grade 10, there is room for only 3 electives or only 2 electives if you are taking French Immersion.• We are confident you will find interesting electives in the

grade 10 offerings.• However, it is possible that you could take a grade 11

course under extenuating circumstances. For example, some strong grade 10 students, choose to take grade 11 Accounting, in grade 10. • Taking grade 12 courses in grade 10 is discouraged.

What is a pre-requisite?

• A pre-requisite is the course you need to have completed before taking the next course. • For example, you need to complete grade 9

academic math to take grade 10 academic math. And, yes, the pathway is important.

Can I change pathway from 9 to 10?

• Yes, it is possible to change your pathway but it is not usually recommened.• You may need to take a summer semester course or repeat

the course the following year at a different level.

Why is course selection important?

• If you wish to get the best possible timetable for next year, you need to follow today’s instructions and make sure your course selection does not contain errors.
