  • From the very start, long before we were called Open Universities Australia (OUA), and even beforethe internet became a part of everyday life, our organisation has been all about making educationeasier to access.

    Where we've come from

A pioneer from the beginningIn 1990, the Australian Government establishedthe Open Learning Initiative, a project aimed atextending access to and increasing participationin higher education, examining the potential ofcommunication technologies for education andincreasing public awareness of higher education. The initiative launched in 1991 with theTelevision Open Learning Pilot, investigating thepossibility of creating an educational televisionchannel, hosted by Monash University, andsupported by a consortium of Australianuniversities, as well as Australias publicbroadcaster, the Australian BroadcastingCorporation (the ABC).Although study via television may soundoutdated now, it was at the time a pioneeringventure (the first time Australian universities haddelivered educational content nationally viatelevision) and established a philosophy ofinnovation that still exists today.Open Learning AustraliaThe launch of the pilot program was followed bythe formation of Open Learning Australia in1993, a publicly funded company with MonashUniversity as its single shareholder. Also underthe auspices of the Open Learning Initiative,

the Open Learning Electronic Support Service(OLESS) was established in 1994, and OpenNet in 1995. The goal of Open Net was toprovide access to online learning services to allstudents, regardless of their location. In 1997 the separate strands of the OpenLearning Initiative were combined under theumbrella of Open Learning Australia (OLA).ExpansionIn 1997 seven new shareholder universitiesgave their backing to OLA: Australian NationalUniversity, Curtin University of Technology,Griffith University, Macquarie University, RMITUniversity, the University of Queensland, andthe University of South Australia.OLAs entry into the higher education landscaperesulted in fewer bureaucratic procedures, moreflexible study schedules for students andexpansion into new study areas that hadntpreviously been available via distance educationsuch as science and art.By 2000, with web presentation and datacompression techniques advancing rapidly, OLAhad begun to turn many of their courses frompaper-based to online.

  • Our goal has always been to make education easier to access. One of the ways we do this is bymaking many of our undergraduate courses and units available without academic requirements -things like ATARs (Australian Tertiary Admission Ranks, the scores students receive aftercompleting secondary school in Australia) and grade point averages. We refer to these courses andunits as open access or open entry (which, by the way, is where our name comes from).

Open Universities AustraliaOpen Learning Australia became OpenUniversities Australia in 2004, reflecting thechanging demands and expectations of itsonline students. Although our name changed, our role as pioneers in the online learningmovement remained the same.OUA began to incorporate new technologies andinteractive multimedia, streaming media, andsocial media into its higher education offerings. These technologies allowed OUA to furtherminimise the isolation of online students, as wellas harness the learning potential presented bychanging technology.

TodayOUA and its university providers continue toenjoy the benefits that come from the pioneeringopen learning legacy established more than twodecades ago.Since our foundation, OUA has helped nearlyhalf a million students with their education andcareer goals.Find out more about working with us at ourLinkedIn Careers page.

    Open Access

How does open entry work?Say youve got your eye on the Bachelor of Arts(Fine Art) with Curtin University. If you want tostudy it as an on-campus student there is atleast one academic entry requirement standingin your way, even if youre applying as a mature-age student. If you study towards the same degree onlinethrough OUA there are no academic entryrequirements to hurdle during enrolment. Youdont need to worry about your previous studyand whether your study schedule will suit yourwork or family obligations you can shape yourtimetable to fit your life.

After initially missing out on the ATAR scoreto get her into the university course she hadher eye on, Avalon Keft found a new way. That new way was Open UniversitiesAustralia, which let her pursue her passionfor ancient history and work towards adegree with Macquarie University online.
