COURSE DESCRIPTION FOR SPECIAL EDUCATION

SPED 1- Introduction to SPED 1

Introduces the philosophical, historical, ethical and legal bases of Special education.

SPED 2 - Introduction to SPED 2

Discusses the biological bases, sociological and psychological theories in Special education.

SPED 3 - Psychology of Children with Special Needs

Describes the developmental learning characteristics of exceptional children and categorizes these exceptionalities.

SPED 4 - Observational Child Study 1

Identifies the different types of observations and how to record these observations. Gives opportunities for actual observations of overt behaviors.

SPED 5 -  Assessment of Children with Special Needs

Familiarizes the students in the use of diagnostic procedures and instruments appropriate for children with special needs, e.g., administration and interpretation of psychological tests used for diagnosing exceptional children.

SPED 6 - Adapted Physical Education

Adaptations of physical education activities to the needs of individuals with exceptions/handicaps, which prevent them from joining the mainstream physical education curricular and athletic program.

SPED 7 - SPED Classroom Management

Describes the characteristics of teachers and other personnel in SPED. It also develops attitude of teaching and SPED personnel.

SPED 8 - Observational Child Study 2

Acquire more competence in observing and recording observations of psychological behaviors of children with special needs.

SPED 9 - Home and Family Life of Children with Exceptionalities

Describes child-rearing practices of parents with exceptional children. This will also encourage

home school partnership in the development of children with special needs.

SPED 10 - Guidance and Counseling for Children with Special Needs

Familiarizes students on how to create an environment/climate for the learners in school so they will develop to the fullest and learn to cope with life in and out school.

SPED 11 - Effective Communication with Professionals and Families

Application of test and measurement concepts in describing behavior of exceptional children.

Reports accurately and honestly results of evaluation to parents.

SPED 12 - Organization and Administration of SPED Programs

Describes procedures in organizing SPED classes.

Be aware of requirements and expectations for organized SPED classes.

SPED 13 - Behavior Management

Introduces psychological approaches in helping exceptional children such as: (1) Neuro-linguistic programming; (2) Extinction; (3) Language therapy, etc.

SPED 14 - Inclusive Education

Be aware of the philosophy and objectives of inclusive classrooms. Discusses the strategies and procedures in inclusive classroom.

SPED 15 - Curriculum for SPED

Becomes aware of the principles of curriculum development for children with physical and psychological disabilities

SPED 16 - Preparation of Instructional Materials for SPED

Gives students hands-on experiences in the preparation of materials for children with special needs.

SPED 17 - ICT and SPED

Integrates technology in teaching different learning areas in SPED.

SPED 18 - Individualized Educational Program (IEP)

Introduces functional Individualized Educational Program (IEP).

SPED 19 - Psychological and Physical Knowledge Approaches

Describes and demonstrates the processes, steps in the psychological and physical knowledge approaches in teaching SPED classes.

BEED Major in Pre-school Education

Pre-Elem 1 - Introduction to Pre-school Education

Presents an overview of the total pre-school education. Discusses the what, the who, the why and the how of pre-school (Historical, Biological, Psychological and Legal Bases)

Pre-Elem 2 - Characteristics of the Young Filipino

Provides students the knowledge of the characteristics of young Filipino Children in the different areas of development (Physical, Cognitive, Personal, Social and Moral)

Pre-Elem 3 - Creative Arts, Music and Drama for Young Children

Challenges, stimulates and develops creativity of the child; plans and prepares various activities of young children such as cong-stories, story plays, rhythmic arts, songs and games.

Pre-Elem 4 - Personal and Social Development

This will provide play and social living experiences among young schoolers.

Pre-Elem 5 - Language and Numeracy for Young Children

Discusses and demonstrates the various strategies in helping young children acquire language skills and number concepts.

Pre-Elem 6 - Science, Health and Nature Study

Discusses the strategies in guiding young children understand basic concepts in Science and Health and providing them experiences in nature study.

Pre-Elem 7 - Preparation of Instructional Materials

Provides students hands-on experiences in preparing developmentally appropriate materials for young children.

Pre-Elem 8 - Observational Child Study

Develops students’ competencies in observing behavior and recording observations through actual use of different observation techniques.

Learns to work collaboratively with the parents for the young learner’s growth and development in the different areas.

Pre-Elem 16 - Trends and Issues in Pre-School Education

Introduces trends and issues in pre-school education such as multiple intelligence, teaching multi-age, multicultural teaching, parental involvement, peer teaching, and emergent literacy.

Pre-Elem 17 - Directed Study in Pre-school Education

Provides the student with opportunities to understand basic concepts, principles and methods of

research; conducts simple studies on learning and development of children ages 0 – 6 years.

Pre-Elem 18 - Technology in Pre-school Education

Acquires competence in using technology in teaching young children.

Pre-Elem 19 - Research in Pre-elementary School

Develops a research plan for a pre-elementary school with emphasis on location, curriculum, facilities, faculty and staff.
