Course Objectives and Focus :

The object of this combined course [Beginning Japanese I and Beginning Japanese II ] is to develop the students effective communication skills that will enable them to converse easily in basic Japanese. Students in this course will be encouraged to aim for N5 (Japanese Proficiency Test).

Course Objectives and Focus : The goal of this course is to further develop Japanese proficiency in both spoken and written Japanese. The acquisition of the four basic skills - listening, speaking, reading and writing - are equally emphasized throughout the course. It will help students obtain confidence in using Japanese to communicate, and communicative skills for levels N3 to N2 of the Japanese Language Proficiency Test.

Course Summary :

This course is designed for students with a solid background in basic grammar, speaking ability, listening comprehension, and reading and writing skills. Through this course, students will develop well-balanced skills for communication, studying the main textbook, its workbook and listening and oral practices on its website. Aims of this course are: 1) review and reinforcement of basic grammar 2) expansion of vocabulary and expressions 3) utilization of more complex structures 4) ability to distinguish between spoken and written language 5) detailed narration and description 6) mastery of an additional 300 to 350 Kanji. Preparatory Work : Preparatory work includes self-study of vocabulary and grammatical explanation in the textbook, and also completing the listening and speaking exercises for each chapters readings and dialogues.

Course Objectives and Focus : The main purpose of this course is to increase students ability to express themselves with confidence in Japanese. (JLPT level N3 to N2)

Course Summary :

This course is designed for students with a solid background in basic grammar, speaking ability, listening comprehension, and reading and writing skills. However, students in this course are expected to go out of class and use Japanese in the real society, and based on that assumption, much time is devoted to conversations, speeches and discussions in class. In addition, a special emphasis is also placed on improving writing skills in Japanese. Skills to be achieved in this course are: 1) giving short speeches on a specific topic expressing impressions and opinions 2) having discussions about the materials in the text and cultural topics 3) writing some compositions on a specific topic in an appropriate written style. Preparatory Work : Students should try and find topics in their everyday lives, such as cultural differences and so forth. Students are expected to consider them when expressing their opinions in their speeches and writings.

This course is a continuation of the first semester course. It is designed to help students obtain a good command of Japanese,

so that they will find themselves having more confidence in communicating at JLPT levels N3 to N2 at the end of the

intermediate course.

Course Summary :

This course is intended to develop all-around communication skills, that is, skills in listening, speaking, reading and writing.

It includes class discussion based on the content of some chapters, some creative activities such as composing Japanese short

poems like haiku, senryu (comic haiku) and tanka, and reading original material such as a short novel. Students are expected

to have mastery of Kyoiku Kanji (, 1006 Kanji) by the end of this course.

Preparatory Work :

Preparatory work includes self-study of vocabulary and grammatical explanations in the textbook, and also completing the

listening and speaking exercises for each chapters readings and dialogues.

Course Objectives and Focus : The course is a continuation of the first semester course. It is intended to develop students ability to express themselves freely in Japanese. They will find themselves having a good command of Japanese, and by the end of the semester, will be approaching the door to advanced Japanese.

Course Summary :

In order to achieve the goal of the course, students will spend much time on speeches, conversations, discussions, and interviews. This course also includes conducting a research project (in some small groups) on a topic of students own choice and giving an oral presentation based on the survey results.

Preparatory Work : Try to find topics in your everyday life, such as cultural differences and so forth, to speak and write about. For the final oral presentation, students cooperate with others in a small group and do some additional work outside class too.

Ce cours a pour objectif dtudier la vie quotidienne au Japon sous ses aspects les plus ordinaires, tout en utilisant les acquis de la sociologie et de lanthropologie pour mettre jour les structures sur lesquelles la socit est btie.

Course Summary :

Le cours aura un aspect pratique et un aspect thorique. En ce qui concerne laspect pratique, les tudiants pourront discuter de ce qui les intresse ou les surprend dans leur vie quotidienne au Japon. Nous ferons appel des situations concrtes que les tudiants rencontrent. Nous tudierons la communication, le systme ducatif, la vie familiale, le fonctionnement des rapports de travail. La partie thorique consistera en une mise en perspective travers des notions cls qui permettent de comprendre les grandes diffrences entre la socit franaise et la socit japonaise. Preparatory Work :

Japanese literature, like English literature, has a long history and contains works in a wide variety

of genres. Japanese literature, as the prolific writer and translator Donald Keene wrote, includes

some of the worlds longest novels and shortest poems, plays which are miracles of muted suggested

and others filled with the most extravagant bombast. It is, in short, a rich literature which deserves

better understanding. It is the object of this course to deliver that. In addition to material indicated

in the Content section below, students will be encouraged to read complete works of their own

choosing.

Course Summary :

This year-long course will attempt to cover 1000 years of Japanese literature, with the first

semester focusing on a representative anthology of worksincluding poetry, novels, plays, diaries,

and so onfrom Japans ancient period (pre-Heian, i.e. up to 794AD) and on to the late Tokugawa

or Edo Period (1600-1868).

Preparatory Work :

Students are expected to keep up with weekly reading assignments, a schedule of which will be

provided at the beginning of the course. Participation in class discussions is a must and will be factored in to the final grade.
