    Course Objectives and Focus : The goal of this course is to further develop Japanese proficiency in both spoken and written Japanese. The acquisition of the four basic skills - listening, speaking, reading and writing - are equally emphasized throughout the course.     Course Summary :

    This course is designed for students with a solid background in basic grammar, speaking ability, listening comprehension, and reading and writing skills.     Japanese literature, like English literature, has a long history and contains works in a wide variety

    of genres. Japanese literature, as the prolific writer and translator Donald Keene wrote, includes

    some of the worlds longest novels and shortest poems, plays which are miracles of muted suggested

    and others filled with the most extravagant bombast. It is, in short, a rich literature which deserves

    better understanding. It is the object of this course to deliver that. In addition to material indicated

    in the Content section below, students will be encouraged to read complete works of their own

    choosing.

    Course Summary :

    This year-long course will attempt to cover 1000 years of Japanese literature, with the first

    semester focusing on a representative anthology of worksincluding poetry, novels, plays, diaries,

    and so onfrom Japans ancient period (pre-Heian, i.e. up to 794AD) and on to the late Tokugawa

    or Edo Period (1600-1868).

    Preparatory Work :

    Students are expected to keep up with weekly reading assignments, a schedule of which will be
