Key reasons for not accepting the jobs
Long working hours (majority organizations offer 12 hours or 24 hours duty shifts) Long-distance to a job place is a major concern for those who are residing out of Gandhinagar-
Ahmedabad and for female candidates Low wages Majority of candidates are females. They are looking for a job in a hospital as they might not be
allowed by the family to work in Home-care Some candidates are not willing to work as health carer as they hold other professional degrees
as well Organizations’ policies; As they have refused to employ one candidate due to her age(above 60
years) Personal preferences or social reasons

CAMPUS PLACEMENT AT IIPHG (Batch-1)
The Indian Institute of Public Health Gandhinagar (IIPHG) has a project sanctioned by the Gujarat State Financial Services Limited (GSFS Ltd.) to design and implement a Certificate Course for Home cum Institutional Health Caregiving. As part of the project, IIPHG aims to-1) Design Course Material; 2) Train Caregivers; 3) Support in caregiver’s placements and follow up after placement; and 4) Standardized course material.
The training of the first batch of students is over in July 2019. IIPHG plans to continue new batches of health caregivers as soon as possible. As part of designing the course, the team at IIPHG, had conducted a quick market survey to understand the supply and demand of health caregivers. We found a lot of variation in both demand and supply. The average compensation offered to health caregivers ranged between 10-15 thousand depending on the hours of work, level of disability of the patient/client, irrespective of formal training received by the health carers or lack of it.
We are in the process of establishing collaboration with a placement agency who will take charge of placements for the next batches.
Only for the first batch, CCGHC team at IIPHG has committed to facilitate placement of those students who have successfully completed the course. We are happy to share that Twenty-two students have successfully completed the course and are available for placement who are now certified health caregivers.
Knowledge and skills learnt by health caregivers;
This certificate course has equipped candidates in basic care and support activities for daily living. The health caregivers trained in this course can generally assist any patient who is bedridden and who requires support for daily living activities, such as bathing, general hygiene, and oral care, grooming, mobility support, toilet support, feeding support etc.
Though the certified health caregivers can provide assistance to any bedridden patient, the special focus during the course has been elderly population.
Placement Process
For facilitating placements, IIPHG has contacted hospitals, old age homes, and private home care registered agencies who offer home care services for people who need support for daily living activities.
Please note:
a. The participating agencies/organizations are requested to give the placement team at IIPHG, the name of the short listed candidates on the same day at the end of the interviews to facilitate further placement efforts.
b. As shown by our market survey, the compensation to such health caregivers was minimum Rs. 10000 for eight hours duty, even without formal training. We expect our candidates to be offered more than the market rate prevailing, as they are certifiedhealth caregivers.
c. IIPHG is only connecting the potential employers and the candidate. The terms of reference regarding roles and responsibilities, hours of work, compensation etc are matters to be discussed and agreed between the candidate and the employer.
d. As part of the agreement with GSFS, IIPHG will contact the employers to take feedback regarding the health caregivers for the first six months. This is strictly an academic exercise to improve the course quality. IIPHG will not be liable to get into any disputes, issues related to discipline, performance or other issues between the employer and the employee in this case the health caregiver. Any discussion about these would be only if it is related to the course content and pedagogy.
e. In case the candidate decides to quit after joining, IIPHG is not liable to replace the candidate. However, in case there is some candidate looking for options of employment IIPHG can refer them to the potential employers.
f. For the safety of both the clients and health caregivers, the scope of activities expected from the health caregiver are clearly defined (Please refer to the list of skills given in the placement brochure). Any additional activities demanded from and performed by the health caregivers will be as per consensus between the family of the caregiver and/or the hospital/institution employing the health caregiver at their own risk.
g. Please note that IIPHG is not liable for any negligence, mishap or accident which happens with or without the involvement of the health caregiver.
Placement plan at IIPHG
For those agencies who have shown interest in recruiting health caregivers trained by IIPHG, personal interviews have been organized at the IIPHG campus on 30th July 2019. The plan for the day would be as follows;
11.00 to 13.00 Most welcome for the Certificate ceremony of the Health caregivers 13.00 to 14.30
Short 10 minutes discussion between the participating agencies and candidates regarding profile of the agency, nature of work expected, compensation offered and so on. After the orientation the students can decide which agency they would like to try for placement.

Background
The project completed its 2nd Phase. Key activities during this phase (24.6.2019 and 24.7.2019)
included;completion of 2nd month of internship at SubhArogyam Private Limited, and Pastella Care,
Ahmedabad, practical examination, finalizing Gujarati modules and skill book document preparation,
finalizing first aid kit to be given to the carers, certificate ceremony and placement interviews. Details of
all these activities are mentioned below.
Completion of Internship at SubhArogyam Private Limited (SAPL) and Pastella Care,
Ahmedabad
Following the completion of the one-month internship at Zydus Hospital, Ahmedabad, students were
placed at SAPL and Pastella care for the 2nd month of internship. SAPL is an assisted living residence
dedicated to geriatric care and Pastella provides services of home healthcare. Of total 22 students, 16
were placed with SAPL and 6 with Pastella Care. Both the organizations arranged a short program on
the last day of internship which was attended by heads of both organizations, project team of IIPHG, Dr.
DileepMavalankar and course participants. All the students were given certificates of internship
experience. The program ended with experience sharing, vote of thanks and high-tea.
Practical Examination at C M Patel Institute of Nursing, Gandhinagar
As per the course design, students are assessed on mainly four aspects (written exam, viva, internship
feedback, and practical exam). Following the completion of the theory, practicals and internship, the
practical examination of students was held at C M Patel Institute of Nursing, Gandhinagar on 25th July’
2019. Each student was given one random procedure using fish ball method. After the allotment of a
particular procedure, they were given sufficient time to
arrange articles or equipment required to perform the given
procedure. Two external examiners Ms. PrafullabenBhutani
and Ms. BhumiLimbachiya from BAPU College of Nursing were
invited for students evaluation. The panel of these two
examiners along with one project team member of IIPHG took

students’ practical examination and evaluated them according to predecided assessment criteria. The
assessment form used for students practical evaluation is attached as an annexure. 1.
The course participants who successfully passed both the theory and practical exam were given
marksheet and course completion certificate. Both the documents were developed and designed by the
project team of IIPHG. Students were evaluated on four aspects as mentioned above. A grading system
was used for final marksheet of the students.
Finalization and preparation of first aid kit
It was decided to provide a first aid kit to all students successfully completing the course. The IIPHG
project team made best effort to search and select the best-designed bag which is appropriate for
placing all needed equipment or articles and which would be easy to carry. We contacted various
vendors and also searched
online for such bags. We asked
a vendor to make bags for us
similar to what we found
online. The bags were
prepared along with 22 sets of
first aid material with 26 items
in each bag (as mentioned in an
earlier report). All course
participants were given the
bags on the day of certificate
ceremony.

BACKGROUND
IIPHG has successfully completed the first batch of Certificate Course for Home Cum
Institutional Health Caregivers. The project has entered the 3rd Phase. The main work during
the coming six months period is follow up of course participants and standardization of course
material. The principal activities undertaken during the initial period (24.8.2019 to 24.9.2019)
are; follow-up of course participants, develop follow-up tools, Hindi translation of course
material and finalization of Gujarati PPTs. Details of each activity are described below.
FOLLOW UP OF COURSE PARTICIPANTS
Follow-up is planned for those eight candidates who have been working since roughly a month
after passing out as well as those who are unemployed. The objectives of the follow-up activity
are as follows:
For those who are successfully employed:
To get a better understanding of the job profile of carers
To understand opportunities and challenges experienced by health caregivers
To know the health caregiver’s personal experiences of working as a carer
To get their feedback about the usefulness of skills learned during the course, during their
employment
For those who did not accept and are still searching:
To track the employment status of each candidate who is in search of suitable
employment
To know the reasons behind not accepting jobs.
Preliminary follow-up findings:
Placement interviews on campus took place in July. As shared in the previous reports, all students
were offered jobs but not all accepted these offers. The entire month of August was spent on the
telephonic follow-up of tracking their status of joining/not joining and reasons.
The status of course participants’ employment is as follows:
Of the 22 candidates, 7 candidates informed IIPHG team that do not need job assistance
at present or at any point of time due to personal reasons
Further, there are 7 students who had received a job offer from at least one employer but
they refused. They are still looking for other opportunities.

3. Subh Aarogyam Private Limited (SAPL), Ahmedabad 7. Renukaben Sheth
4. Home Care 8. Ramilaben Patel
Key reasons for not accepting the jobs (also mentioned in placement report)
Long working hours (majority organizations offer 12 hours or 24 hours duty shifts)
Long-distance to a job place. This is a major concern for those who are residing out of
Gandhinagar-Ahmedabad and for female candidates
Low wages
The majority of candidates are females. They are looking for a job in a hospital as they
might not be allowed by the family to work in Home-care
Some candidates are not willing to work as health carer as they hold other professional
degrees as well
Organizations’ policies; Two candidates have been refused jobs due to their age
For those candidates who are employed, a set of tools were prepared during this period which is
described in detail in the next section.
DEVELOPING FOLLOW UP TOOLS
The plan is to take feedback through systematic tools and interviews for those eight candidates
who are successfully employed. Tools have been prepared for the following;
1. Supervisors of those candidates who are employed in and organization
2. Family/ elderly in case the candidate is working in-home care,
3. The health caregiver himself/herself.
The three Gujarati tools are given as Annexure-1. We have started taking appointments with
employers for follow-up.
4 | P a g e
PREPARING STANDARDIZED MATERIAL FOR COURSE
One of the deliverables of the project is a standardized package of course material in Gujarati
which consists of;
1. Skill book describing procedures for 47 essential skills for health caregivers
2. Textbook containing 11 modules explaining the theory behind the skills and covering
psychosocial aspects of care.
3. Standardized Power-point presentations for each module which includes text, pictures,
videos, and activities wherever appropriate.
Presentations were prepared by each resource person during the implementation of the first
batch. These will be standardized in the third phase of the project. A template for PowerPoint
presentations has been prepared which will be followed to prepare the rest of the presentations
(Annexure. 2).
HINDI TRANSLATION OF COURSE MATERIAL
Another deliverable of the
project is to prepare the course
material in one other language
other than Gujarati at the end of
this project.
Since Hindi is the national
language and understood by the
majority of Indians, IIPHG has
decided to translate the course
material into Hindi.
Professional translators were
contacted and sample translations were invited. The best in terms of quality and cost has been
given the work. Dr. Dhanlakshami Vatvani, Ph.D. in Hindi and retired professor is doing the
translations for us. She has submitted one module out of a total 11 and her work is in progress.

posted at their residential organization. As per discussion, participants will be placed for
home-care on weekly rotation basis, if the elderly under home-care agree.
Preparation and Planning of Students Placements
As proposed, IIPHG will facilitate the placements of course participants. To start with, IIPHG
has prepared the data base of potential employers who may be interested in recruiting our
trained carers. The potential employers list includes hospitals, elderly care organizations,
home care agencies, startups or NGOs. IIPHG has also designed a placement brochure which
will be utilized for placement purpose. IIPHG is planning to organize placement drive in the
end of July and convocation function in the 1st week of August. The data base of potential
employers and draft placement brochure are attached as annex 2 and 3.
