For those who don’t know Jaelee “June-Bug” Munson has a Metastatic Neuroblastoma, its a tumor roughly the size of canteloupe that is growing on her adrenal gland. She was diagnosed last April and has been fighting it ever since. Jaelee has been receiving chemo to help ward off the cancer. After reading posts on facebook about Jaelee’s situation, Tyler Wills of Neo- sho, MO. (with help from his mother Trina) raised money to purchase a doll to help Jaelee heal. Wills and his mom By Dustin Andrews BAXTER SPRINGS - Baxter Springs High School Senior Kaid Karnes signed his letter of intent to be a Baseball Pitcher with Cowley County Commu- nity College Thursday in front of an au- ditorium full of his fellow classmates. BHS Atletic Director Swartz thanked Karnes for the talent that he had brought to the athletics program at BHS. Head Baseball Coach Chris Mercer said that this had been a journey for Kaid and the other guys on the team that started at a young age. Mercer said that Cowley County was ranked as #1 in their division nationally last year and ranked preseason as #5 this year. By Dustin Andrews BAXTER SPRINGS - Its well past Christmas, but some stories are worth sharing even if they are a bit late, this is one of those. On December 24th, back in 1946 or 47, three friends were sitting together talking and they knew of local families that were too poor to do any- thing for Christmas. The three friends were John Eddy, Kenneth Underwood and Harold D. Youngman. They each decided then and there to contribute $20 each and spent the rest of the af- ternoon assembling bags for these families. When distributing the bags, Youngman was broken up af- ter the first delivery. He had to stop and gather his composure before delivering the next two. From that time until his death in 1990, Youngman and his wife Estella, continued their gift giving and increased the dollar amount each year. At times when money was tight, Youngman was known to bor- row money to fulfill his duty. By Dustin Andrews BAXTER SPRINGS - For a town with nothing ever going on there is quite a bit to listen to if you know where to look. A good example is the Blue Jam that is held regularly at the Red Ball Bar and Grill on 5th Street. Last Wednesday the Jam con- sisted of Brian Barnard, Dru M. Smith COLUMBUS - The Cherokee Coun- ty Commissioners approved the above map to realign the commissioner dis- tricts in Resolution 04-2017 (page 6). With the redistricting, all of the voters in Spring Valley/Spring Valley town- ship, will be in Commissioner Cory Moates, District 3, being moved from District 2. Mr. Robert Myers, came before the commission, and proposed an agree- ment between his office and the com- mission to complete the title work for the properties on the second property list for a tax sale on August 1, 2017. He stated that this would be a three year agreement to get all the past properties completed. Commission directed him to complete the agreement with County Counselor Barbara Wright and she will bring it to the commission for approval. Janet Miller, Cherokee County Eco- nomic Development Director, came before the commission to discuss Reso- made cookies and sold them to raise the funds. Jaelee’s dad Kevin posted “We are so touched by this young boy! What an amazing little human!” His post- ed contined that Jaelee loved her doll and of course the money he sent as well... That was an additional $165. Munson said that as adults we can learn an awful lot from this young man. “I just can’t say enough great things about you Tyler.” added Kev- in. “Oh did I tell you that Tyler has never even met Jaelee? - Just Awe- some!” - said Jaelee’s dad, Kevin. Karnes was Pitcher and center field- er for the BHS team last year. Mercer said that Karnes finished up the sea- son with 87 strikeouts, 11-15 with 10 RBI’s and he was nominated as 4A Div II All State Picher. Mercer said that Karnes was did a good job when he was healthy and really “gutted up” when he wasn’t to perform when he wasn’t. He said that Karnes had tweeked his elbow during the state playoffs and could only throuw his fast ball, but he did just that until a relief picher could be subbed in. Good luck at Cowley County Kaid! The Youngman’s principal concern was to eleviate the problem of young and needy school age children with his generosity. After the program had grown, it was set to be a voucher pro- gram where recipients could go the local JC Penney in Bax- ter Springs to receive clothing and necessities. Once JC Pen- ney closed its doors the trust sent vouchers for Newman’s in Joplin and later returned to use Walmart in Baxter Springs until its closure a few years ago and now they use Walmart on 7th Street in Joplin. The vouchers are structured so the families can take the children recieving them to the store and cash it in specifically for clothing and toys for that child. The vouchers can only be used on the children and they are verified at the time of checkout. This last Christmas season the Youngman Trust helped out 233 families in the USD 508 School District, of those families 433 children were helped. In total the trust assist- Weaver, Kyle Ogle and Justin Cauble. The goups gets toghether to give local Blues musicians a place to go. Dru Weaver said, “We woud like to thank Alan and every- one at the Red Ball for letting us use the place to play.” Weaver said that Wednes- day’s crowd was great. He added that they will be playing again at the VFW this Satur- day night at 8 pm. A couple of other locations to keep in mind is the free show on Thursday nights at the American Legion for those with an ear for old time Western music and the regular music at Angels on the Route during lunch. ed with over $28,000.00 worth of new clothing and toys to these children. In an effort to give the most money where it was needed, Youngman added the Presby- terian Pastor, USD 508’s Su- perintendent, the City Mayor, and Police Chief to his board for the Trust. Currently the list of children in need is supplied to the trust by the school system and a voucher is mailed out to recip- ients. There used to be an ap- plication that was used, but it became too cumbersome, that is when it was decided to use the schools list. With tax season coming up and some people looking for good causes to donate to you might consider sending some to the Youngman Trust to help perpetuate what some locals started a long time ago. If you find yourself in such a spot you may send it to the Harlold D. & Estalla G. Youngman Trust c/o First Presbyterian Church, 133 East 12th Street, Baxter Springs, KS 66713 lution 02-2017 (referring to the pay- ment of bills). The commission went into executive session with Wright, Miller and Economic Development Board Members Brian Smith and Trish Carroll. When they returned a decision was tabled. Mr. Dale Helwig provided the com- mission with information about re- sources that he has access to through K-State for Economic Development. He stated that Rawlings County has had success with economic develop- ment and he would like to set up a ZOOM call with them and Miller’s office. He will coordinate with Miller and get the information to the com- missioners. Wayne Elliott, Cherokee County Mapping, brought a price increase for maps, stating that there had not been a price increase in seven years, commission approved.
