“Given what it takes to be successful in higher education—and later in life and work—students have to be ready to learn—in a state of physical, psychological, emotional, intellectual, social, and spiritual well-being. Mind, brain, and body must be in shape for and open to learning experiences”.” (Douce, L.A., Keeling, R.P., Advisory Committee, American Council on Education, Student Affairs Administrators in Higher Education (NASPA), American Psychological Association (APA), 2014.

Summary of the Problem

• A 2012 Survey by the Association for University and College Counseling Center Directors indicated that the number of students with significant psychological problems is increasing:

• Anxiety is the top presenting concern among college students (41.6%),

• Depression (36.4%) • Relationship problems (35.8%). • California Community College Chancellor’s office and the

Foundation for California Community Colleges recognized the need for more student mental health services by making $3,060,000 available for health centers to expand their mental health services.
