Grand Knight’s Message

Greetings Worthy Brothers: In the midst of winter doldrums we must strive to add to our ranks. Please make a conscious effort to recruit new members. We must strengthen our numbers and also build up the parish as a whole. In order to accomplish this, we must remain highly visible in the

parish in our works and our deeds. I would like to remind all of you to wear your name badges when you attend church and church functions. Proudly wear Knights apparel in public to attract attention and spur questions about what we do. Educate yourselves about the Knights and be prepared to have answers when someone asks about our great organization. Always try to hold the door for people as they enter church, they’ll notice our courtesy.

I would like to place a challenge before our council to add 10 new members by the end of 2018.

Brother Knights and Families: We are in the midst of Lent – a time of prayer, fasting, and almsgiving. I came across this quote from St. John Chrysostom (347-407) about fasting and find it helpful, and so I share it with you: “We are taught to fast regularly as part of our Christian discipline. Why should we fast? How do we serve God by going hungry? Surely we need adequate food each day in order to work hard in God’s service. Jesus criticized most vehemently those who drew

attention to their fasting, urging us to fast in secret; so clearly fasting is not a matter for personal pride. There are two reasons to fast.

COUNCIL NEWSLETTER FEBRUARY 2018

Join the Guild Keep up with the canonization petition of our Founder, the Venerable Father Michael J. McGivney: FATHER MICHAEL J. MC GIVNEY GUILD KNIGHTS OF COLUMBUS 1 COLUMBUS PLAZA NEW HAVEN, CONNECTICUT 06510-3326

Website: http://www.fathermcgivney.org

Grand Knight’s Message continued…. This goal is attainable and without goals we have no reason to do better. The old saying is “what gets measured gets done.” We have literature; available in the desk in the gathering space, to help explain why being a Knight is important to the Catholic church’s continuation. Let us also actively encourage some of our brothers whom we haven’t seen in a while to attend more meetings and get our brothers to advance in their degrees. We need to find out why a few members haven’t made their 2nd & 3rd degrees. Those brothers who advance to 3rd & 4th degrees are more committed to stay in our organization.

If we build up our council ranks we’ll be more able to serve the Lord and each other. We will work together to be Holy Family’s “Go to” guys to get things done. God bless us and keep us.

Vivat Jesus, Tony Malafronti Grand Knight, St. Michael’s Council

Chaplain’s Message continued… The first is to break our attachment to material things, of which food is the most central, and so compel us to depend on spiritual things. When we are eating regularly, food not only sustains our bodies, but provides pleasure and satisfaction. In itself there is nothing wrong with such pleasure. But when we do without food, we are reminded that the only true and lasting source of joy is spiritual. The second is to express solidarity with those whose poverty forces them to go hungry. We may fast from time to time as a discipline; but many people fast continually because they have no money to buy food. If we are truly to show compassion to the poor, we must experience within our own bodies the consequences of poverty. Fasting is thus an incentive toward generosity. And the money saved during a fast can readily be given to relieve the enforced hunger of others.”

May you all have a prayerful and productive Lent.

Fraternally yours,

Fr. Mark Kelleher Chaplain, St. Michael’s Council

A Founding Notion: Protecting the Breadwinner’s Income While jobs may be safer in 2018, accidents, injuries, and illnesses that can impact your ability to work still happen. Most, in fact, do not happen on the jobsite or place of employment. Did you know that a 2011 study revealed that more than 95 percent of the long-term disability claims on file were not work related? The Knights have always sought to protect members’ families from the “loss” of a breadwinner. I’m sure you know all about Father McGivney’s vision for our insurance program. But you may not know that Father McGivney also wanted to find a way to help members who couldn’t work because of an illness. After all, the “loss” of the breadwinner does not have to mean that person’s death; it can also mean the loss of the breadwinner’s income. Consider that loss for a moment. How would your family fare if a source of income suddenly stopped? Could a dual-income family manage on one income? What about young families with a working father and a mother who cares for the children? What if his income halted due to an accident or illness? I’ve heard some people say they have coverage at work, but too many aren’t sure what this coverage entails, how much income it would provide or for how long. Having this protection counts for something, certainly, but it isn’t “yours”; it’s provided by the company for which you work at their discretion. It could be eliminated tomorrow. That’s where a personally-owned disability income insurance product, like Income Armor, comes into play. It can offer valuable income replacement in the event of an injury or illness. If you have a job, you must know about this coverage. You can contact me at [email protected] or 302-750-1433 to talk about the Great products and services

Brs. Fran Denver, Ron Cahill, and Bill Black helped collect the many food donations at the 12:00pm Mass on February 4, 2018.

Souper Bowl SundayThe Soup-er Bowl Can Collection was a tremendous success. Held on the weekend of the Super Bowl, this yearly event collects food donations from the Parish before each Mass. This year, February 3 & 4, saw many Brothers and volunteers gather the

donations to fill the OutReach Food Collection Bin and 2 shopping carts, as well as $201.00 in cash and checks. With the advertising in the Church bulletin and coverage on the TV’s in the parish Gathering Space, as well as signs on the shopping carts provided by Br. Snapper and Linda and signage provided by Br. Steve Murray the word was out and many Parishioners came through with the food donations. Lots of volunteers were at each Mass: Brs. Steve Murray, Joe and Pamela Nash, Bill Black, Ron Cahill, Wayne Wilberding, Tony Malafronti,  and Fran Denver, Bill Hall and Al Ware, and others who supported and helped! Thank you all for your efforts to aid those less fortunate!!

It was a quite a success!!

Father Michael J. McGivney was given the title “Venerable Servant of God” by the Holy See in March 2008.

The bestowal of the title “Venerable” marks another important step on the journey to beatification and canonization. It signals that the Congregation for the Causes of Saints has carefully considered the positio on Father McGivney’s life and virtue, and after consulting with historical experts and theologians, has judged it to be valid and convincing.

Once the members of the congregation make a positive judgment on the position, the matter is referred to the Holy Father for his approval. His positive response makes possible the issuance of a “decree of heroic virtue” and the bestowal of the title “Venerable.”

A decree of heroic virtue indicates a pastoral judgment on the part of the Church. For the good of the Christian people, the Church recognizes that Father McGivney was a man who went beyond what is required of a good Christian. His life was one of outstanding virtue, in which he “heroically” practiced charity, humility and prudence. Father McGivney went above and beyond the ordinary call to Christian perfection, much as a martyr lays down his or her life for Christ and for the Gospel.

Father McGivney’s “martyrdom” was the daily giving of his life in fidelity to the duties of a typical parish priest, in an extraordinary and selfless manner. When we recall all that he undertook in spite of his youth, inexperience and his lifelong battle with poor health, his heroism is unmistakable.

Toward the Heart of God

What comes next? A reported miracle must be presented to the congregation in Rome and judged favorably if there is to be a beatification, with the bestowal of the title “Blessed.”

Medical and theological experts must carefully examine the evidence in order to pass judgment on the case. If judged positively by the Congregation for the Causes of Saints, that judgment will be passed to Pope Benedict XVI, who alone makes the decision about beatifications and canonizations.

It is for this reason that Reports of Favors attributed to the intercession of a candidate for canonization are so important.

For Father McGivney, a healing through his intercession was reported early in the process, but in 2011 the Vatican Congregation judged it to not be miraculous in nature. Another possible miracle was reported in January 2012 and is currently under investigation by the postulator.

The technical aspects of a cause for canonization are fascinating but can sometimes distract us from the essential focus: the glory of God made manifest in the holiness of one of his servants. A cause for canonization is not meant to lead us into the intricacies of Church norms but into the heart of God and his call to holiness of life. Father McGivney’s cause, in particular, is a summons to ordinary Catholics to embrace the mystery of Christ in its fullness so each of us will see where we are called to heroic virtue. Father McGivney was an apostle of lay spirituality, and his message is intensified each time the Church recognizes his outstanding life and virtue.
