"The best way to find yourself is to lose yourself in the service of others." - Ralph Waldo Emerson

Knight of the Month The month of May is always a stressful time because of the Saint Philip Casino Night. A lot of work must be done by a lot of different people to make it a success. One part of that success was accomplished by Mark Miles. He single handedly got the table sponsors lined up months before the event. He was also involved with ticket sales and meal planning. Mark is always one of the first to volunteer for a job and can be seen at our pancake breakfasts and casino nights. He attends our business and planning meetings. It is my pleasure to recognize the heroes of the Council 9884. Thank you Mark Miles, you are the May 2012 Knight of the Month.

New(?) Newsletter Editor Starting with the newsletter you are reading now, we have a new newsletter editor. This came about because I have been preparing to become the new Grand Knight in July and I asked LJ if there was a chance he would resume being our editor. The editor’s job is a technical, and at times, a frustrating job because the editor is under a deadline and is relying on others to supply the issue’s content. LJ had “Burned Out” and he needed a break. Dan Ballard graciously agreed to take over as editor. I want to personally thank Dan for the job and effort he has done. It is not easy to be the editor and to take that job on such short notice is a testament to the fine character he has.

Note Bene: June Planning Meeting With a new slate of officers and activity directors it is very important that officers and Activity Directors attend the June planning meeting on June 21st at 7:30pm in the education center to go over the event calendar and help you make this coming fraternal year easier less stressful and more successful and FUN. Since we missed having an issue for May, here are the Knights who had anniversaries and birthdays last month. Kudos to our Chaplin and Pastor!

I will take this space to extend my thanks to Brother Knight Dan Ballard for stepping up when our Council had been going without a newsletter for several months. Service to the community. Thanks, Dan!

St. Philip Cinco de Mayo Casino Night

May 5, 2012

SUCCESS!! Council 9884 teamwork and dedication proved to be the reasons why this year’s St. Philip Casino Night was a fundraising success. After months of planning, coordinating, enlisting volunteers, ticket and table sponsor sales by Mark Miles

and Dennis Bozimowski, the scene was set for a Mexican buffet dinner, deserts, drinks and great table time with friends, family and fellow parishioners.

Typical of our events, tons of volunteer time was evident during set up and execution…apologies up front if any names were left off. Crunch time Saturday Cinco de Mayo morning began as the infrastructure team set up the gaming tables, dining area, food service, and silent auction. This team included Bob Dubek, George Driscoll, GK Bob LaCroix, Sean McIntyre (with daughters in tow), Steve Schweiger, Brian Friesenhahn, Eddie Martinez, Rich Lubke, . Next, Lady Knights Sylvia Martinez, Ann Robillard and Cathy Landry took over to decorate the Community Life Center, many more ladies provided desserts.

All the silent auction items were categorized and logged in the computer by George Driscoll with the help of Ann Robillard, Becky and Keith, daughter and son-in-law of our Grand Knight, Bob Lacroix. George had previously set up a website where people could log in and register silent auction items they were donating. Plus, Ann modeled the donated gold/diamond women’s tennis bracelet raffle item, generating extra ticket sales.

If you liked the food provided you need to thank the cooks that began their task early that morning. Cooking outside on the grill were Juan Sandoval, Brian Friesenhahn, Bob Forsyth and Danny Apodaca. Preparing the food in the kitchen were Richard Rogers, Mark Nauman and Louis Hernandez. People started showing up right after mass was over, they had dinner and there was non-stop casino excitement till closing time.

Bob Dubek and Rich Lubke were the

dealers for the two full tables of Texas Hold’em poker. Cathy McArdle managed the two slot machines and Bill Miller ran the roulette table. The rowdiest group of people that night were at the two craps tables set up and operated by Gregg Orbock, Brian Friesenhahn, Pete Hatton, Pete Whelan, Bob LaCroix and Bob Forsyth. Karen Hillen managed to keep the coolers full of softdrinks and water for all the thirsty, extra funds were raised from donations for these drinks.

On the Black Jack tables we had LJ, Vince Zawlocki, Louis Hernandez, Mike Wykrent, Kevin Pfister, Ken Groh, Mark, Seidenberger, Joe Walker, Mark Miles, Patty Osborne, Gregg Schoenrade, James Crow, Phil Delvecchio, Sean McIntire, Danny Apodaca, Tony Perry, Jim Wagner and Mark Nauman.

Gary Osborne was a fixture at the front desk registering people as they came in. The night was kept in constant action by the talent of both Gary Osborne and Mike McArdle, our two Masters of Ceremonies, raffle hawkers, “special chip deal” generators extraordinaire. These two Knights did a great job of selling additional tickets and recognizing VIP’s such as Padre Juan and Deacon Ray attending the event.

Thanks to many donors, over sixty silent auction items were bid on and purchased. The big giveaway prizes included a 39” HD TV, an X-Box 360, an outdoor grill, and a Nook Color. The winner of the Texas Hold’em poker took home a 26” HD TV DVD Player Combo.

Estimated proceeds, targeted to worship space lighting renovations, $5,000. Bob and George will have the official final tally next month (after I get those pesky final receipts turned in).

It was a hectic event like usual and I am glad and proud to call myself a member of Knights of Columbus Council 9884. This council’s members came through again and I know they will repeat their efforts next year. A big Thank You goes out to all the people that stuck around after all the fun was over, but the cleaning had to be done. I especially want to thank all the new members to our council that stepped up and helped out like old pros. SK Eddie Martinez, Chancellor

URBAN KNIGHTS REPORT Casino Wrap up for the

Fifth Annual Adult Day Stay Casino Night May 19, 2012

Day Stay for Adults is now called Special Abilities of North Texas, a not for profit charitable 501(c) 3 organization I, Bill Miller, sit here and write this to you, my friends, dealers and brothers united in Christ in the Knights of Columbus founded on the basic principle of charity, the greatest of all virtues. PROLOGUE

It took a terribly long to get a consensual contract approved between the council and new Adult Day Stay CEO Troy Greisen. First contract went out on March 7, 2012 that was a bit meager and required only 12-dealers. Don’t you know (as most of you might) that past events were not well attended and at times we had more dealers than players? Although, that, what-it-may-be Troy and I met and discussed a grand event that required every bit of our equipments including of all things Pat and Joe Merick’s, God bless their souls, Chuck-A-Luck Dice game, whew! Well cutting to the chase with 20-BJ et. Al… it would take at least 30-dealers, hmmm; Troy was pretty adamant about what he wanted. I explained my doubt about us being able to deliver 30-dealers to run such an event, none-the less lets give it a try. So contract number two went out on April 18, 2012 for the whole enchilada. I immediately broadcast an APB that if we could get 30 or at least 25- volunteers, then I would commit to a $2400 contract to supply equipment and 30-dealers for the May 19, 2012 event.

Well guess what? Within a week 18-dealers signed and this, two weeks after our St Philips Cinco de Mayo, to deal again on 5-19-12, I was impressed, although not the 30 Troy was optimistic for. So I told him that we couldn’t do it for that large of event; … however, I did commit to 20-dealers. So after about three weeks of not hearing back from Mr Greisen I figured the deal was off. But to my amazement on May the 9th he emailed that he would sign for a 20-dealer contract for $1,700, good for us. However; there were

conditions to the agreement, Oh boy what

now? Set up had to be 1:00 pm, dealers had to be there and ready to start at 6:30 and, in addition to Texas Hold’em, two “hi stakes” poker tables games were to be run; BTW Brian told me that poker is not conducive to a casino operation, and it turned out that he was right (as usual), no one played, ask Jim Wagner and LJ. Anyway, Mr. Bill agrees on 5/9/12 to a 20-dealer event. THE SETUP

The Chapelle des Fleurs (French for chapel with flowers) is a very nice place. To ensure an early set up they had two strapping young men and a lady available to lend a

hand. This was good because Brian, George, Louis and myself (useless at lifting these days), but with five men and a lady set up was complete by 2:30pm. Oh yes, a side bar, Rich and Jay were not available, but Brian took up the slack. BTW (#2) don’t you know that Jay is moving near Statesville, NC the end of May 2012? He will be truly missed as a craps dealer extraordinaire, equipment hauler with Rich and Brain and set up man. He has especially come through for me many times over the years; so Sir Knight Jay Darling, I love ya man, God Bless you and yours. THE LAST MINUTE

No pre-meal today boys and girls just start dealing straight at 6:30 pm. But wait, where are the players! All the grandeur of a 250 player event turns out to be just like the four previous events, i.e., a light crowd. We had 13-BJ, eleven in the main room and two in a back “Brides dressing room” very nice, just ask Paul Frances, our last minute Texas Hold’em dealer. Yes, panic set in as I realized of the 23 who signed up none were poker dealers. So after going down my list of poker dealers and calling several I found Paul was willing and available at the eleventh hour, so special thanks goes out to you my friend Paul, a busy man as well, as we all are. Derailed again with my narration, sorry. So anyway we sit around and talk amongst ourselves for an hour. THE MAIN EVENT

Turns out they had about 125 players so it did get a busy. Although, dealing straight, as directed with the idea that players would spend $30 for another $2000 in chips; thus, I think most tables were empty by 9:00 pm.

In an extra ordinary turn of cards, a first ever for me

with seven players that started out losing as normal, but like someone turned on a heater, the players got hot. I couldn’t believe they were all coming ahead and I did play straight; Alan brought out the dreaded black chips ($10-grand each), my biggest winner was $47,000.

Now for the best; yes you 23-heroes / dealers who without your support this would not be possible; I thank you for your commitment and hopefully had fun.

Inside guard and Past Knight Line Chief Editor and publisher LJ (Lawrence Jermyn), Church Director and rookie dealer Dennis Bozimowski, Lecturer ad Roulette dealer Vince Zawlocki, Home association secretary Alan Harris, PGK Bill Miller, PCB brother Bob Forsyth, PFN SK Brian Friesenhahn, Greg Orbock, Joseph Eskew a busy man who fines time to help out, thank you, Mike Wykrent who brought his friend Grant Lehman, who says he will help us again thank you very much, FS George Driscol, GK Bob LaCroix, Paul Frances Texas-Hold’em dealer and Jim Wagner Poker dealer (but no players (sorry Jim), Greg Orbock, Insurance Agents Steve Schweiger and Kevin Pfister. PGK and PFN Grant Beagles and bride, thank you Ellen for dealing BJ. PGK, PFN and PDD Mike McArdle and bride, thank you Cathy for handling the slots.

Finally, Louis Hernandez who helped with set up and learned from Vince how to play Roulette and he did one more amazing thing, Louis donated a slot Machine that he had for over 10-years; Wow what an un expected surprise. So, many kudos, and a great big thanks for the fourth machine, to Louis. Now we can have two areas for slots so thank you thank you thank you again. One last comment thanks to all especially Brian for tear down and getting the trailer loaded. But Vince took a tumble while stepping off the ramp, oh pain. But he is ok and on the mend. RIP So with all those words written I say: “Norm Urban, where-ever you are, we love you for setting this machine in motion.” SK Bill Miller, Casino Ops Manager

State:

38th Annual Johnny Lopez Knights of Columbus

State Golf Tournament

Brother Knights and Fellow Golfers, Just a short note about this year’s State

Golf Tournament. Because of the severe drought everyone was in last year we did not get to enjoy the full

beauty and challenge of the golf courses at Bear Creek Golf World last

year. So the decision was made to go back. I was there

a few weeks ago and the fairways once again have grass on them, the rough was rough and the creeks and ponds were full of water, just waiting to be filled up with golf balls.

The tournament has been scheduled for Friday September 7, 2012, Saturday September 8, 2012 and concluding on Sunday September 9, 2012. Again it will be a Friday Scramble teeing off at 1:00pm and individual & team play on both Saturday and Sunday teeing off at 8:00am. For entry forms and hotel information, contact the PoC.

Hope to see all of you in Katy! PofC: Boyd Burris, [email protected] (C) 214-507-8420, (H) 817-430-8406
