Thanksgiving with Friends
Dear Resurrection Family,
Our Sister Congregation, the Fredericksburg Spanish Seventh Day Adventist
Church, suggested it and we gladly accepted. We will be having an
International Potluck Meal together on Sunday, November 23, after our
worship service. Everyone at Resurrection and everyone at SDA are invited
to bring food to share that represents their heritage.
SDA members will join us for our 10:00 Worship. It should be lively! Pastor
Carlos Duran is working with us on having a worship service in both English
and Spanish. Pastor Jim called his friend Pastor Jon in San Diego to get ideas
on how they do this at Clairemont Lutheran Church. We’ll be using the
monitors to project words in the other language when a person is speaking.
We’ll be singing in both English and Spanish.
“My House shall be called a House of Prayer for All Nations” declared the
prophet Isaiah on behalf of God. “Take the Gospel into all the world”
declared Jesus in Matthew 28. Our annual Resurrection Service of
Thanksgiving will certainly help us remember and participate in God’s Great
Vision.
Please! Let us know you are coming to the potluck meal by signing up on
the Bulletin Board in the Narthex or on “For the Record”.

During the month of October the Personnel Committee recommended Lisa Glatz for hire as church secretary. The
council approved this through electronic voting.
The council discussed the new bulletin format which will begin this Sunday November 2nd
. The increase utilization
of the screens in the sanctuary and the new format will cut down on the amount of paper used. Thank you
Worship & Music.
Discussed going back to two services starting November 30th
.
Discussed the budget and the decreased giving. Please note both Jeff’s letter and also the letter that is
communicated under a separate cover from the council.
Trunk or Treat was a wonderful combined effort with Resurrection Lutheran Church and School. The weather was
beautiful and the Trunk or Treat was able to be held outside. Thank you to everyone for an awesome togetherness
project!
The Youth Group continues to meet and has discussed Synod retreats for the youth in the coming months.
Oktoberfest will be held this Sunday after the church service. The majority of the event will be held indoors due to
the weather. All proceeds will go as undesignated to the church for the greatest need.
The audit committee has met and an engagement letter has been sent so that the audit might be completed
before the congregational meeting in January.
The next council meeting will be held early due to the Thanksgiving holiday. It will be November 20th
at 7:00PM
These highlights are not official until approved by Congregation Council.
Respectfully Submitted,
Missy Arp
Congregation/Council Secretary

FREE ORGAN CONCERT NOVEMBER 21
Saint Mary Catholic Church, 1009 Stafford Ave., Fredericksburg, presents organist David Brian Lang in a free concert Friday, November 21, at 8:00 PM. A prominent concert organist, choral
conductor, and accompanist throughout the Washington, DC area, Mr. Lang will perform on St. Mary’s organ of over 3,000 pipes a dynamic and varied program including three of J. S. Bach’s ingenious “Schübler Chorales” and Louis Vierne’s famous Carillon de Westminster. A reception will follow where you can “meet the artist.” For more information, contact David Mathers at
[email protected] or (540) 373-6491.
Music Notes from Amy Burcher
Hello RLC Family, We are quickly approaching an active time in our music ministry with
many special occasions just around the corner. November 2. This is always a special time
when we can share in the lighting of candles and singing dedicated songs in tribute to "those
who have gone before us." We will be joining the other church family that shares our building
with us for a combined service on November 23 to worship together and celebrate a time of
Thanksgiving. The choir members and others are preparing for our Christmas Cantata and for
the Christmas Eve services which will include children, teens, and guests. "When Earth
Received Her King" is our cantata for this year which will be presented on December 14th. My
daughter Kelly Burcher from Arlington will be directing our cantata this year, and I will join with
a small orchestra to accompany this musical. I'm aware "there's a song in the air" as I'm
already starting to hear Advent music around me. More than two thousand years ago, the
Word, which is the very essence of God Himself, was born into our midst as an innocent
baby. The songs we present this season are indeed a celebration of that fact, with beautiful
scriptural words, describing our savior with an ending emphasis on sharing the Word with the
world. I look forward to worshiping with all of you during this season. Thoughts and prayers are
with all of you! Love, Amy

RLC Nursery Caregiver needed!
The primary and overarching responsibility of the Nursery Caregiver is to provide for the care,
safety, and well-being of children (generally under the age of 5) whose parent(s)/ caregivers(s)

unless there is a change to the schedule. The Nursery Caregiver must have had previous
experience with the care of small children, including providing comfort to those who may be
upset when a parent/caregiver leaves. Formal training and certification in childcare, first aid,
and CPR is desirable but not mandatory. Any person 17 years of age and older, and with
experience caring for young children may apply. We are first extending this opportunity to
congregation members and those referred to us by congregation members.

Dear Friends in Christ,
Last month I reported that August was a positive month for RLC financially with Income
exceeding Expenses. While August was a positive cash flow month, the negative cash
flow from July still produced a negative cash flow overall. September has a negative
cash flow as well and projecting ahead for October our overall expenses continue to
exceed our income. Even though we are faithfully paying back last year’s dedicated
accounts, this current overall effect increases the amount that we now owe to our
dedicated accounts over previous month’s balances. Our continuing M&M income is
insufficient to support our continuing M&M expenses. If we want to break this cycle of
dipping into our non-restricted dedicated funds to support the M&M programs and
operations of our church, M&M Giving must increase since most of our M&M Spending
goes to fixed costs that cannot be reduced.
Blessings,
Jeff Sohlke
THE MOUNTAIN BUILDING PROJECT WAS A RESURRECTION SUCCESS
The ELCA Day of Service Project and the Twenty-Fifth Anniversary Project had a
tremendously fine outcome. A mountain of school supplies and snacks were achieved. I
had hoped that the congregation could have seen the complete outpouring of donations
in the Narthex, but lines of communication got crossed.
Two schools in Spotsylvania and the Minnick Schools of Lutheran Family
Services have each received the materials. Ellen Bushman’s vehicle was also packed
with many boxes of snacks for the Minnick School students. She reminded me that the
Resurrection Church People are always most generous with their participation in
outreach projects.
Thank you, Resurrection Family Participants, for making this project a mountain-
high success!!! What a Blessing for many children trying to receive and education.
May you find God’s Love in these ventures,
Gene Ernst
P.S: Coming is the Angel Tree and nonperishable food collection for our partner school,
Chancellor Elementary.

Hello Resurrection family! I have gotten to meet a lot of people in the last few
months but if we have not crossed paths allow me to introduce myself. My
name is Kasey Worman and I am the Youth Activities Director. The youth group
has taken off this fall. Most recently, we participated in Trunk or Treat. It was a
blast! Coming up for November is the next group meeting. It will be a wrapping
party on November 16. Youth in grades 6-12 are invited to all meetings and
activities. When membership increases, we will start separate middle school
and high school meetings to explore different topics. Next is Lost and Found!
This is a youth retreat for 7th and 8th graders. There are registration forms in my
office or e-mail me for one. Please turn in registration forms to me or my mailbox
by November 5th. Friends are welcome to join us. There was a generous
donation from a member of the congregation for the youth group. This money
will be going towards scholarships for all youth retreats this year. We are very
grateful for this contribution. Keep an eye out for more information coming
about a youth lock-in, painting the youth room, and Winter Celebration youth
retreat for 9-12 grade! Attention Youth: there is a high school youth
representative and a middle school youth representative position available.
Contact Brenda Scheel or me if you are interested as we will make a decision
soon. Have a fabulous November!

$5,000 Gift Appreciated One of our families recently gave a $5,000 unrestricted gift to Resurrection. Our
Congregation Council designated 10% to the Virginia Synod and ELCA. The 90% will be used
to support our Youth, especially in providing camperships to Virginia Synod Youth Events.
Thanks be to God for the gift of this generous family!

ENDOWMENT FUND
In the October newsletter article, the Fund was described and defined. This month’s article
discusses the distribution process once the Fund reaches the prescribed distribution amount of $50,000.00
Annual distributions from the Fund will be a percentage of the Fund balance based on the
ELCA Endowment Fund Pooled Trust spending rate and may include interest and dividends
received, realized gains or losses, and/or unrealized gains or losses.
The percentage to be distributed on an annual basis (will be further subdivided according
to the following and as determined by the Fund Board.
a. A minimum of twenty percent (20%) for outreach into the local community.
b. A minimum of twenty percent (20%) for ELCA church wide ministries.
c. A minimum of twenty percent (20%) for extraordinary program/capital improvement
or other ministry initiative within the congregation.
d. The remaining forty percent (40%) will be distributed through any of the above
categories.
Ministries and outreach programs to which monies will be distributed is a function of the
Fund Board. This determination will be made in coordination with the various Congregation
ministries, the Congregation Council, and the pastors.
This is a very broad distribution definition. The Fund Board is looking at options that will
provide a more focused distribution and provide the Congregation with a compelling reason to
help fund the Endowment.
To this end, we have invited Ms Ellen Hinlicky from the Virginia Synod to speak to the
Adult Forum on November 16th
. She brings an enthusiasm for fundraising and ideas for which
funds can be raised and spent to further a church’s ministries. Please join us on the 16th
for this
very informative session.

ELECTRONIC GIVING DOESN'T TAKE VACATIONS
During the year if you can't make it to church due to travel or other commitments, we encourage you
to automate your regular donations. The church relies on the consistent financial support
of the congregation and electronic giving offers an easy way to give on a recurring basis.
Pick up an authorization form on the credenza in the narthex. We thank you for your continued
support!

All Saints’ Sunday
All Saints' Day celebration has a long history in the worship life of the Christian
Church. It began as a commemoration of the martyrs who had died for the faith,
and it has since become a day when we honor and remember those who, in death,
have joined the Church Triumphant, as well as the faithful saints of the present
who serve Jesus Christ. Martin Luther held that all Christians are simultaneously
sinner and saint--a sinner because of our rebellious nature, but a saint because of
salvation in Jesus.

8th Annual Free Community Health Fair
The Health Ministry Team wishes
to thank those who volunteered time and
services for the 8th Annual Health Fair
sponsored by Resurrection Lutheran
Church and held on Saturday October
18th. We also thank those who attended
the Health Fair, participated in the
screenings and gathered health
information from the many exhibitors. It
was truly a wonderful outreach for the
community. Over 200 participants and
exhibitors attended the Health Fair,
receiving health and dental screenings, flu
shots as well as information and referrals
to assist and promote personal health and
wellness.
We are already planning to make
the event even better next year and we
welcome any suggestions you may have.
Thank you again for your support.
Health Ministry Team
Pastor Carol came to the rescue on October 21st!
An out-of-control pick-up truck severed a utility
pole near the church and a fire was started and
live wires endangered travelers on Route 3. PC
directed traffic until the Rescue Squad, Highway
Patrol and the Dominion Power crew arrived.
