For an unprecedented TEN years in a row, Holy Names Academy has won the Metro League All-Sports Trophy, the leagues highest honor. In 2017-18, Cougar teams are collectively determined to make it 11! Our fall sports teams are off to a great start. Please come cheer on your favorite HNA teams at their competitions; your young women love the fan support. Jogathon Update The Jogathon event on September 20 featured a sunny, exciting, and colorful day of student bonding—and one that looks to have success- fully raised funds to support the teams in the 13 Cougar sports. All the young women of our school walked or ran their 10 required laps; members of the crew team, in lieu of a shorter practice that day, ran 25 or more laps each! The Montlake track was adorned in class colors of Skippers red (Class of 2018), Pipers blue (’19), Cadets yellow (’20), and Clovers green (’21), while DJ Bradon from Radio Parties played their favorite tunes. Thank you to all our students for their great effort, and, of course, to the friends and family who so generously supported their efforts. Winter-Sports Physical Forms and Online Registration Deadline: October 30 Students planning to turn out for gymnastics, basketball, or winter crew must have their online registration completed and their sports- physical form submitted to the Athletic Office by Monday, October 30. Go to the Athletic Eligibility page on the HNA website for instructions. Athletes must undergo a physical exam every 13 months to participate in any interscholastic sport. Fall-sport athletes must additionally register to play a winter or spring sport, but should find the process simple and quick, using the schools FamilyID online registration process (see the Athletic Eligibility page). CROSS COUNTRY Cougar cross country runs strong, with 44 participants this fall. To date, the team has participated in two league meets and two competitive invitational meets. Highlights: At the Bellarmine Invitational, in the frosh race Sarah Mirkin ’21 won, Christina Crow ’21 placed 3rd, and Beatrice Wingfield ’21 placed 9th. In the JV race, Olivia Mohn ’20 finished eighth. Hope Olbricht ’18 placed 13th overall in the varsity race, and the varsity team finished second overall. At the Bellevue Invitational, Sarah Mirkin ’21 finished 7th in the top heat, while teammate Lucy Klebeck ’19 placed 18th in the same heat. Emma Velling ’20 placed 9th and Lucy Martinez ’19 was 5th in their respective heats. The varsity placed 5th overall in the meet. Cross Country Captains: Hope Olbricht and Ivy Hawksford ’18. Soccer, Swim & Dive Strong in First Half of Seasons

Where to see HNA cross country: Two regular-season meets and one invitational remain before the Cougars head into the Metro League Championship Meet on Thursday, October 19, at Lower Woodland. See the HNA Athletic Calen-dar for details.

SOCCER

Cougar soccer is off to a great start as its three squads near the halfway point of their seasons.

Records: Varsity: 4–1–5 (in Metro League, 3–1-1). JV: 7–2–1. JVC: 2–2–1.

Highlights: The program has compiled a collective 12–5–6 record; players at all levels are working hard. In 10 matches, varsity’s stingy defense has held all but one opponent to one goal or less—five of them shutouts!

Standouts: Malia Hanson ’19 and Tess Carden '18 have shone for varsity early in the season with their strong play and versatility, while Grace Tevaseu ’18, Delaney Carr ’18, Tara Shelton ’19, and Megan DeTuerk ’20 have lead the team’s stellar defense.

Where to see soccer: Varsity and JV soccer practice and play home games on the turf field at Miller Playfield, only four blocks from the Academy at 330 19th Avenue East (corner of John St.). The JVC squad practices and plays home games at Upper Genesee Playfield, 4316 S. Genesee Street. Check the HNA AthleticCalendar for details.

SWIM AND DIVE: NW Catholic Invitational Champions 2017!

Cougar swim & dive has a very large team this year: 79 swimmers and 14 divers. Metro League meets have been weighted this year, which means HNA is swimming against the top teams in Metros. The team has won three of their first four meets (as of September 28), and Coach Rachel Loy notes that her athletes are working hard in practices and meets, full of Cougar spirit! The team currently has 108 Metro qualifying times (recorded by 36 different ath-letes), and 44 District qualifying times (spread among 13 athletes).

District Qualifiers: Cassidy Wells’20 (6 events). Vilija Liffick ’21 (6 events). Melanie Bantle ’18(5 events). Stella Cross ’20 (5 events). Kellen Gibson’18 (4 events). Allyson Yao ’20( 4 events). Sanjna Battepati ’20 ( 3 events). Flora Dougher ’20 (3 events). Asta Liffick ’19 (3 events). Malia Morgan ’21 (2 events). Meya Hedrick ’20 (2 events). Mela Houser ’21 (2 events).

Dive: This year HNA has the largest dive team in the league! The top scoring Cougar Divers are Jessica Chin ’18, Delaney Hammer ’19, and Cait McNeill ’20.

Updates: Volleyball, Golf, Crew

VOLLEYBALL

Records: Varsity 4-4 (Metro League 3-1). JV: 7-1. JVC: 7-0. (All as of Sept. 28.)

Highlights: Varsity volleyball is off to a solid start this season, currently in second place in the Mountain Division of the Metro League.

Standouts: Stats leaders (as of September 26): Simone Davis ’18 leads the team in kills with 63, Alise Hartz ’17 with 83 digs, Maya Ryan ’19 with 91 assists.

Where to see volleyball: All three teams play Lakeside School on Monday, October 2, at HNA. The Cougars then travel to Bishop Blanchet on Wednesday, October 4, in the HNA gym. See the HNA Athletic Calendar for schedules.

GOLF

Record: 2–3 (as of September 28).

Highlights: The young Cougar golf team has faced the season’s most difficult league match-ups early in the schedule, and are catching their stride as they move into October. HNA defeated Ingraham in their first match of the season and bested Nathan Hale (72-31) on September 27.

Standouts: Janine Surge ’19 leads the team with an average score of 38 on 9 holes. Clara Betray ’20, Riley Esteban ’21, Olivia Jenne ’20, and Gabriella Kinney ’19 shot their personal best scores of the season against Nathan Hale.

Where to see them: Four regular-season matches remain before our golfers head into the Metro League tournament on October 17 at Jackson Golf Course. Check the HNA Athletic Calendar for dates and locations.

CREW

Highlights: In HNA crew’s first race of the season, Row for the Cure, the experienced team performed very well, plac-ing first in three out of three event categories entered. Additionally, our rowers successfully defended the title of top junior fundraising crew team in the Northwest by raising just over $8,500 and winning a pink erg!

Where to see crew: October is a busy month for HNA’s rowers. After hosting the Tail of the Lake regatta on October 1, HNA boats will race at Head of the Snohomish in Everett on Sunday, October 8. The Varsity boats then travel to Boston to race October 21–22 in the 53rd annual Head of the Charles Regatta, one of the nation’s most prestigious rowing events.
