CHALLENGE: An operator was experiencing sever drillpipe corrosion issues. A water-based mud was used during drilling. Bariod was tasked with providing a solution to reduce the corrosion problem.

SOLUTION: Baroid designed a customized corrosion control package based on

BARACOR® 700 inhibitor, ALDACIDE® G biocide and OXYGON™ scavenger. Previous drillpipe corrosion rates were more than 14 lb/ft2/yr. Application of the

customized control package reduced corrosion rates to 1.2 lb/ft2/yr

RESULT: Baroid’s corrosion control package provided the operator with reduced

corrosion rates, pitting was eliminated and all erosion and corrosion issues were controlled.

The protection eliminated failures and extended of the life of the drillpipe producing substantial cost savings for the operator of almost $1,000,000.

CHALLENGE: Previous wells drilled in the field encountered problems with acid gas influxes, resulting in several drill pipe

twist-off events and fishing operations due to corrosion in a 12 ¼” section. Drilling a new well, the main challenge was to reduce the effect of corrosion due to acid gas influx, and reduce

drilling time in order to reach TD.

SOLUTION: For drilling the 12 ¼” section, Halliburton Baroid was asked to provide a water-based mud (WBM) capable of

controlling acid gas influx while maintaining effective fluid performance. Baroid proposed a polymer-based system, which included BARACOR® 95 and zinc oxide in order to combat

the effects of C02 and H2S.

RESULT: Acid gas effects were controlled throughout the interval, avoiding the NPT encountered in previous wells. The drilling fluid and corrosion control solutions reduced the operations time by over 30 percent compared with

previous wells. This preventive treatment saved the operator more than 1,000,000 USD per well in drilling costs.
