Correlative use of es (‘it’) vs. das (‘that’)
(1) Die Passagiere müssen es/?das hinnehmen, [dass die Piloten seit dem frühen Morgen streiken.]
The passengers have to accept it/that that the pilots have been on strike since early morning.

Interchangeability of es (‘it’) / das (‘that’)
Quantitative differences betw. es (‘it’) and das (‘that’) in outcomes of corpus
investigations
Meaning differences Pütz (1975) argues that das (‘that’) is not a substitute for es (‘it’): (2) Er hat es bedauert, dass er schwarz gewählt hat.
He has regretted it that he voted black. (3) Er hat das bedauert, dass er schwarz gewählt hat.
He has regretted that that he voted black.
Topological differences (4) Dass er schwarz gewählt hat, _ /*es / das hat er bedauert.
That he voted black that he has regretted. 6 DGfS-33, University of Göttingen
Das (‘that’) as a placeholder?
Information-structure test (Sudhoff 2003)
new information = wide focus (Höhle 1982)
Was ist denn passiert? ‘What has happened?’
(5) Die Bürgermeisterin hat #das/✓es bei der letzten Gemeinderatssitzung {begrüßt/erlaubt/bewundert}, dass die Bürger mehr Verantwortung für den Winterdienst übernehmen.
The mayor {appreciated (literally: greeted)/ allowed/ admired} #das/✓es at the last town council meeting that the citizens assume more responsibility for winter service.

Das (‘that’) as a placeholder?
Corpus investigation das (‘that’) refers to a pre-mentioned discourse entity: (6) [Mit einer Lasershow wird der Hauptteil des von den Jungen
Liberalen organisierten Abends eingeleitet.
only 8 attestations of das in the investigated corpus

Experimental evidence
Pilot study with 18 placeholder-taking verbs, e.g. bedauern ‘regret’, bewundern ‘admire’, hinnehmen ‘accept’ etc.
Hypotheses es (= correlative placeholder)
no requirements on left discourse das (= anaphoric pro-form)

acceptability judgements: rating on a scale from 1 (very good) to 4 (very bad)

Interchangeability of es (‘it’) /das (‘that’)?
Conclusion I:
Experimental evidence that das (‘that’) is no systematic competitor of es (‘it’) distinction between anaphoric and placeholder uses of
correlative elements das cannot be used as a placeholder
Empirical support for introspectively-motivated claims by Pütz (1975)

divergent classifications in lexico-/grammaticography verbs are classified as + correlate-taking provided that
there is one single attestation mostly instrospective, construed examples,
e.g. verba dicendi et sentiendi
70 out of 120 verbs are classified inconsistently
Corpus study
Method exemplary selection of 35 verbs (based on Pütz 1973, Sudhoff 2003) search of COSMAS II (W-Archive of written language)
limitation to 1000 randomly selected hits manual selection of first 100 relevant examples relevant contruction: verb + extraposed dass-object-clause evaluation + es vs. – es

Sporadic examples: (7) Es ist schrecklich, wenn vor so vielen Dingen ein dunkler
Vorhang ist. Ich möchte ihn immer nur zerreißen, aber ich kann es nicht. Ich glaube es dir, dass Du den Vorhang nicht zerreißen kannst. lit. I believe it you that you cannot tear the curtain
[TLP, 29, cited from IDS-Grammar: p. 1487]
Anaphoric use? licensing of es by potential antecedent in left context es refers to pre-mentioned discourse entity
21 DGfS-33, University of Göttingen
Hypothesis testing
Sudhoff (2003) going back to Pütz (1975) claims that with certain types of predicates, putative correlative es is not a placeholder, but rather an anaphoric pro-form.
Hypothesis based on introspective and experimental evidence: es as a true correlative placeholder only with class I verbs es only as an anaphor with class II verbs
22 DGfS-33, University of Göttingen
Information structure: wide focus
Verb class I: Was ist denn passiert? ‚What has happened‘?
(8) Die Bürgermeisterin hat ✓es/✓_ bei der letzten Gemeinderatssitzung begrüßt/erlaubt/bewundert, dass die Bürger mehr Verantwortung für den Winterdienst übernehmen. The mayor appreciated (literally: greeted)/ allowed/ admired ✓it/✓_ at the last town council meeting that the citizens assume more responsibility for winter service.
Verb class II: Was ist denn passiert? ‚What has happened‘? (9) Die Bürgermeisterin hat #es/✓_ bei der letzten
Gemeinderatssitzung gesagt/behauptet/festgestellt, dass die Bürger mehr Verantwortung für den Winterdienst übernehmen. The mayor ... said/stated/asserted #it/✓_ that ...
23 DGfS-33, University of Göttingen
Discourse-old entity

Verb-driven use of correlative es (‘it’)
Conclusion II
surface homonymy of ‘correlative’ es (‘it’) corpus and experimental evidence for two verb
classes anaphoric vs. placeholder use of es (‘it’) is verb-
class- and context-dependent
26 DGfS-33, University of Göttingen
Summary
No interchangeability of es (‘it’) and das (‘that’): evidence for online processing differences of es and das es is a correlative placeholder or anaphoric pro-form das is only an anaphoric pro-form
Empirical support for the theoretical distinction between
+/- correlate-es-taking verbs
Combination of different methods: theory-driven introspection (cf. already Pütz 1975, Sudhoff
2003) corpus studies online and offline experimental studies
