CORPORATE VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITIES

Volunteers are crucial to the operation of the Greater Cleveland Food Bank. It would not be possible to collect, sort and repack all of the food that comes through our warehouse every day without volunteers. From groups of ten to 100, companies can provide employees and management with this great team-building opportunity.

HARVEST FOR HUNGER

Join more than 600 local companies and organizations in the fight against hunger by participating in the Greater Cleveland Food Bank’s annual springtime Harvest for Hunger campaign. Harvest for Hunger is a collaborative effort of four area food banks serving the food-insecure in Northeast Ohio. This campaign is one of the largest annual community-wide food and funds drives in the nation. The food and funds raised provides more than 21 million nutritious meals to hungry men, women, and children in 21 Northeast Ohio counties.

Companies that participate in Harvest for Hunger have discovered that, in addition to helping those in need, their employees have enjoyed the team-building activities of their company food and funds drive. Businesses, supermarkets, schools, and individuals throughout Northeast Ohio work together each year to help local food banks raise critical dollars, which we use to provide nutritious food to local hunger centers and programs.

Internal food and funds drives are vital to the campaign. Additional opportunities for support include employee matching gift programs, a corporate contribution, or sponsorship of a Harvest for Hunger event.

POVERTY SIMULATION

Hosting a Poverty Simulation is an excellent opportunity for your company or organization to help educate your staff about the problems people in poverty face every day. This half-day simulation is great for social service providers, educators, religious leaders, elected officials, and employers, just to name a few. Participants will play the role of simulated family members and spend a "month" in poverty. Afterwards, participants will take part in a facilitated discussion on how it felt to spend a "month" struggling to meet basic needs and learn how they can become more involved in helping solve this problem in their community.

In order to conduct a Poverty Simulation, your organization will need to provide:

• Approximately 3 hours

• 15-20 volunteers

• At least 3,000 square feet of space

• 44-80 participants

• 12 tables and 175 chairs

FEE: $1,000

in our service area turn to local hunger centers for food assistance.

CHILDREN’S NUTRITION INITIATIVE

Cleveland has one of the highest rates of child poverty in the U.S., and approximately one-third of the people we serve are children. The Greater Cleveland Food Bank’s Children’s Nutrition Initiative (CNI) is comprised of four programs that serve at-risk children when they are most vulnerable to hunger – after school, weekends, and in the summer. Backpacks for Kids, Kids Cafe, Summer Feeding and School Market programs put much-needed food directly into the hands of children in need.

SUPPORT LEVELS AUDIENCE $5,000 & Up Low income families and families with at-risk youth

"Cargill is deeply committed to the Greater Cleveland Food Bank and the fight to end hunger. For more than a decade, Cargill and its’ employees have worked together providing financial and volunteer support focused on food security and nutrition."

- Debby Capela, Cargill

FRESH PRODUCE INITIATIVE

Help the Greater Cleveland Food Bank continue to expand its Fresh Produce Initiative to provide more fresh fruits and vegetables to people at-risk of hunger in our communities.

According to Feeding America’s Hunger in America 2014 study, 64% of our clients reported they have had to choose between paying for food and paying for utilities, and 62% reported choosing between paying for food and paying for medicine/medical care.

Additionally, nearly half of households reported making tough choices and trade-offs to keep food on the table:

• 46% report eating food past the expiration date

• 28% report pawning or selling personal property

• 78% report purchasing inexpensive, unhealthy food

• 40% report watering down food or drinks.

SUPPORT LEVELS $5,000 & Up

SENIOR NUTRITION INITIATIVE

One of the most vulnerable populations at risk of hunger are senior citizens. Since many seniors live on a fixed income, it is often difficult for them to make ends meet. Each month, the Food Bank provides meals and groceries for nearly 26,400 seniors, 15% of the people we serve. With the growing number of seniors living longer, these numbers will continue to rise.

The Greater Cleveland Food Bank’s Senior Nutrition Initiative is comprised of two programs that serve low income and home bound seniors. The Senior Meals Program provides nutritious meals to seniors so that they can live healthier and more nourished lives. Through our community partnerships, meals are prepared in the Food Bank Kitchen and delivered to community centers or picked up by partners for delivery to homebound seniors every day.

Our Senior Markets provide healthy, nutritious food to low-income seniors residing in large apartment and housing complexes. Volunteers and staff distribute food to senior residents who are often forced to make difficult choices, like having to choose between paying for medicine and paying for food.

You can make a difference in the lives of Northeast Ohio’s seniors.

FOOD AS MEDICINE

One-third of the households we serve include a member with diabetes. And two-thirds have a member with high blood pressure. Without the proper nutritious food, many of our clients will likely experience declining health and incur increasing medical expenses. As we partner with healthcare providers, it is our goal to serve more than 7,000 clients with food-related health challenges.

You can provide healthy food to those who need it most.

SPONSORSHIP LEVELS $2,500 and up

SUPPLEMENTAL NUTRITION ASSISTANCE PROGRAM OUTREACH

The Greater Cleveland Food Bank’s SNAP Outreach Program provides application assistance to eligible low-income community members that are not currently receiving public food assistance benefits. As various sources of food donations are in decline or simply maxed out, it is clear that the Food Bank cannot reach our goal of closing the local "meal gap" solely through our food distribution efforts. SNAP can help fill this gap.

The Food Bank staffs a full-time Help Center where people can call to find out if they are eligible for SNAP, as well as their potential eligibility for other benefits assistance. Staff members also travel to the counties we serve and connect community members to benefits. For each SNAP application filed in Ohio, a family receives an average 933 meals, making SNAP outreach a highly effective and efficient way to ensure more people have access to the nutritious food they need. Every $1 the Food Bank invests in our SNAP Outreach Program enables us to provide access to 22 meals! And, every $5 spent in SNAP benefits generates $9 in local economic activity.
