Academic subject presentationsThese sessions give you the opportunityto learn more about the programmes onoffer at our Cornwall Campus. You’llhave the chance to experience studyingwith us first hand through interactiveactivities such as sample lectures andpractical sessions. Academic staff willalso be available to speak to you anddiscuss the detail of the programmes.

Academic and supportservices information fairAn academic and support servicesinformation fair will run throughoutthe day in the Refectory. Academic staff from each subject area and representatives from the followingsupport services will be available:Accommodation, Admissions, CareersAdvisory Service, Employability,Student Finance, the Students’ Union (FXU) and Welfare (includesAccessibility, Chaplaincy, Counsellingand the Nursery).

If you are interested in studying as part of our Flexible Combined Honoursscheme, a representative will be

Campus toursWalking tours of the campus will takeplace throughout the day and will be ledby student guides. e tours run subjectto demand so there is no need to book.e tours take in the whole campuswhich is very steep in parts – we would advise you to wear comfortablefootwear.

Alternatively there is a self-guidedwalking map of the campus which isavailable from the registration desk in the Refectory.

Accommodation toursGuided tours of our accommodationwill be leaving from inside theRefectory every 15 minutes from 09:00 until 14:15. ere is no need to book but these tours do getvery busy. We recommend you plan an accommodation tour around yoursubject and general presentations.

Alternatively you may wish to view our virtual tour at www.exeter.ac.uk/virtualtours or speak to staff on theaccommodation stand in the Refectory.

Camborne School of Mines (CSM) test mine visitCSM’s test mine is an undergroundfacility for explosive, mining practicalsand experimentation. If you areinterested in studying Geology orMining Engineering, optional visits tothe CSM underground test mine willtake place in the afternoon. Toursdepart by minibus at 13:30 and 14:30 and take approximately two and a half hours in total. All visitorsattending with prospective Geology/Mining Engineering students arewelcome but priority will be given toprospective students if demand is high.

Please note that the mine is entered atground level but the floor is wet, muddyand uneven in places. We recommend thatyou bring wellingtons/walking boots and a warm jacket.

Our talks run throughout the day and a timetable with room locations can be found on page 8. Academic subjectpresentations will last no more than 50 minutes (except the test mine visitand optional Biosciences practicalsession – see below).

BiosciencesOur programmes in ConservationBiology and Ecology, EvolutionaryBiology and Zoology are taught bysome of the UK’s foremost biologists,working in conservation, ecology andevolution. Our conservation andecology degrees offer more direct fieldexperience than any other comparabledegrees in the UK. Our staff have closelinks with a wide range of conservationorganisations, many of whichcontribute guest lecturers to theseprogrammes. Our three-year degrees are now also available as four-yearprogrammes with study abroad. You

can also choose to study a JointHonours degree with Geography (BSc Conservation Biology andGeography) if you wish.

This session takes the form of a subjecttalk (approx. 45 mins) followed by anoptional sample practical lab session(approx. 45 mins).

Camborne School of MinesCamborne School of Mines (CSM)teaches programmes in Geology, MiningEngineering and Renewable Energy.CSM has an international reputationwithin industry and offers excellentopportunities for student placementsand graduate employment both in theUK and overseas.

GeologyOur Geology programmes have beendesigned to provide the skills andexperience relevant to potentialemployers and CSM has one of the best graduate geoscience employmentrecords in the UK. This presentationtakes place in our Geology TeachingLaboratory and provides a programmeoverview, including details of fieldwork and graduate destinations in the UK and overseas.

Mining EngineeringOur BEng Mining Engineeringgraduates are highly sought after byindustry both in the UK and aroundthe world. CSM offers excellent

facilities including a state-of-the-artmineral analysis suite and is the onlydepartment in the UK to have its owntest mine for teaching and research.This session includes an overview of the programme and a tour of ourexcellent departmental facilities.

Renewable Energy Our Renewable Energy programmeshave been designed specifically to meet the needs of employers and offer excellent employmentprospects. They are practical,vocational programmes forindividuals seeking a professionalrole in the rapidly expanding andstrategically important energy sector.This session is held in our fullyequipped Renewable EnergyLaboratory.

EnglishEnglish at the Cornwall Campusfocuses on seminar-based teaching,where you’ll have the opportunity tocontribute regularly to discussionsand get to know staff and fellowstudents well. Our programmes arecharacterised by unique options inliterature and the environment. Wealso offer English as a Joint Honoursdegree with History or Geography, or you can study under our FlexibleCombined Honours scheme.

This session includes an informalintroduction to the structure andcontent of the degrees and a sampleseminar on the critical reading of aliterary text, with the opportunityfor participation and questions.

GeographyAs a Geography student you’ll havethe opportunity to study the latesttopics in the field, from climatechange to popular culture. You’llgain experience using the latest GISsystem, remote sensing and digitalmapping software and you’ll havethe opportunity to carry out work-based study and a range of fieldwork. We also offer Joint Honoursdegrees with Politics, History,English and Conservation Biology,or you can study under our FlexibleCombined Honours scheme.

This session takes the form of a subject talk followed by theopportunity to speak to academicstaff about our programmes.

HistoryHistory at our Cornwall Campuscombines the traditional quality ofan Exeter History degree with afresh and innovative perspective. Weoffer a Single Honours BA History,as well as four Joint Honoursdegrees and the Flexible CombinedHonours scheme. We reflectenvironmental and ecologicalapproaches to history in ourteaching as well as the moretraditional aspects and also offer a unique Public Historypathway designed to develop youremployability skills through projectwork with external organisations.

LawWe offer a qualifying Law degree (LLB)with the benefit of small study groupsand excellent law library resources. In addition to our LLB, you can alsostudy Law as a Joint Honours degreewith History or Politics, or as part of the Flexible Combined Honoursscheme. We have excellent links withLaw firms and our own pro bono lawclinic on campus as well as a studentlaw society – the Lyonesse Law Society– which organises social events,visiting lectures, debating andmooting activities.

This session will include a sample law seminar and the opportunity to speak to the Head of Law aboutthese programmes.

Politics and International StudiesWe offer both a Single Honours BA programme in Politics andInternational Studies as well as three Joint Honours degrees whichenable you to study Politics with Law,Geography or History. You can also

study Politics as part of our FlexibleCombined Honours scheme. Academicstaff have particular expertise inethno-politics, security studies andelectoral and political behaviour andthis is reflected in the distinctive coreand optional modules available toPolitics students at the CornwallCampus.

This session will include a samplepolitics seminar and the opportunityto speak to a member of academicstaff about our programmes.

Flexible Combined Honours SchemeThis innovative Combined Honoursscheme enables you to combinemodules from up to three differentfields of study not otherwise availablethrough an existing Joint Honoursprogramme. The title of your degreewill reflect your areas of study, forexample BSc Geography and Lawor BA English and Politics.

You can choose to study:

• English • Geography • History • Law• Modern Celtic Studies/Cornish Studies

• Politics

This session will outline the innovativenature of the scheme and includes theopportunity to speak to a member ofacademic staff.

Parking on the dayFree parking is available for the OpenDay in all Cornwall Campus car parks.This includes the Pay and Display car parks and those sign-posted ‘permit only’.

Directions to the Cornwall Campus (known locally asTremough Campus)To drive to the Cornwall Campus pleasedo not rely on satellite navigationsystems; please use the followingdirections. The Cornwall Campus isapproximately two hours drive fromExeter. From the north, take the A30west from Exeter until you reach theA39 signposted Truro. Drive throughTruro following the signs for the A39 toFalmouth. At the Treliever roundaboutgo straight over and follow the signs to the CUC Tremough Campus (ourCornwall Campus).

Train The campus is in Penryn, which has itsown train station. There is a frequentdirect service to Truro from manymajor British cities. At Truro, change to the branch line service to Falmouthand leave the train at Penryn. Thecampus is about a 20-minute walk from the station so please takeadvantage of the free shuttle service to the campus (see above right). For train times please contact national railenquiries (tel: 08457 484950 or visitwww.nationalrail.co.uk). Alternativelyyou can leave the train at Truro trainstation and catch the No. 88 bus from outside the station direct to the campus. For timetabling visitwww.travelinesw.com

Free shuttle from Penryn train station For those travelling by rail, there is afree shuttle bus service from Penryntrain station to the campus, runningfrom 09:00 until 17:30 (last bus fromthe campus bus stop). If you wouldprefer to book a taxi from the station,telephone +44 (0)1326 373007 or +44 (0)1326 212141.

NB: Newquay Airport is approximately40km from Penryn and if you’re usingpublic transport you will need to take abus from the airport to Newquay andthen another bus to Penryn (typical totaljourney time 1.5 to 2 hours).
